Rotary movement ot' the guide bloi-k pro-- duces a. variation in the co-etlicient oi' frir-` tion because of the resultant of the pressures of the grinding wheel and thil back guide resisted by the bottom guide. 'l'hc center of the work and the center of rotaV tion of the guide block should. be the saine and the line of Contact of the grindingr wheel is always the saine for any position of the guide block. By turning the guide block to the left in Fig. 6. the friction of the work on the bottom blade is decreased. Turning the guide block moves the point oi' intersection of the plane of pressure between the workand wheel up and down the bearing edge of the back guide plate.
Assuming the work to be a polygon lia\-- ing a large number of sides, it will be noticed that by turrling the guide block. it will be possible to obtain a position when an angle of the polygon will contact with the grinding wheel while a side of thil poly.lv gon will Contact 'viith the end of the bark guide. This will of course result in a minute flat taking the place of the angliand further resiilt's in a polygon in which the number of sides heroines so great that prabticall perfectly round work is obtained. {han} found that to obtain this perfect work, tbc circumferential distance` from the line of contact between the work and the grinding wheel to the line oi' con tact between the work and the bottom blade should be suoli that it cannot be divided equally into the circumference of either the work` or the wheel.
The taper of the grinding wheel causes the Work to move endwise between the blades in the direction of the larger di ameter of the wheel. By turning the guide block support on its shaft the rate of this fced`may be varied. the fastest feed being had when the lwork and the arbor ol thc wheel are in the same plane.
