To all whom t may conce-rn Be it known that I, HENRY LEIMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to cigar boxes.

This invention pertains more particularly to cigar boxes which are constructed at a factory and are capable of being shipped to the customer in a knocked-down condition and by the customer readily and accurately set up or folded into box form.

It is one of the objects of my present invention to provide a knock-down box construction comprising relatively movable side and end members and a bottom, preferably the bottom and the members being flexibly connected thereto and are constructed of an integral sheet of suitable and substantial material such as cardboard or paperboard.

One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide an efficient, practicable, inexpensive and quickly and easily applied means for securing the box elements in their assembled box forming position.

With these and other objects in view as will be readily manifested to those versed in the art, the invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details of construction and arrangement of the parts as more particularly described in the following speciiication relative to the embodi` ment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

I have shown my invention in the present embodiment as comprising a box which is constructed of a. blank sheet 2 of suitable dimensions and so cut as to form when folded along the longitudinal lines 3 and the transverse lines 4 parallel side members 5-5 and parallel end members 6-6. In order to secure the desired rigidity and durability in the box construction, I prefer to line the inner faces of the'parallel sides 5-5 with wooden liners 5 and the ends 6-6 with liners 6. The wooden liners are shown ashaving their end edges complementarily rebated or inset so that they will form mutual stops when the shoulder or overhanging portion of one member' enters the recessed or rebated portions of the other member so that the faces of the members abut aga-inst the end edges of each other thus forming a substantial stop when the members are in the box-forming position. The rebated portion of the end and side liners or members is indicated at 7. The top edges of the folding side and end members are shown as being in a common plane when the parts are erected and the lower edges of these liner members are spaced sufficiently outwardly from the fold lines 3-3 to enable the layers to overlap a preferably cedar bottom 8 and clench the same in position when the box is set up, a feature not claimed in this application the same having been made the subject of a claim in my earlier application Serial Number' 273115.

One of the important features of the present invention consists of a simple, inexpensive, easily applied and eicient corner brace or stay which the purchaser of the knocked-down boxes may readily apply when he desires the boxes set up for use. One form of such a stay is illustrated as comprising a corner bracket or binder which is L shaped in plan view and the ends of the arms 9--9 of the stay are perforated at 10 to receive fastening pins 11 which are driven down through the top of the stay and into the upper edges of the wooden layers 5 and 6. The stay can be made in any suitable manner and of any suitable material in an economical form or construction and having the desired stiffness and which, to secure the desired stability of the parts, comprises the form illustrated and which is kmade of a sheet of metal with the downturned flanges 11-11 along the outer edges of the L shaped body portion.

From the above it will be seen that I have provided a box which is not only constructed of inexpensive materials, but which may be shipped in a knocked-down condition and assembled at small expense by the purchaser and have provided a simple means for staying the erected sides of the box without the employment of skilled labor, and which can be done quickly and eiliciently and With accuracy. The corner stays, which are generally designated at l2, are supplied in quantity With a respective number of the knocked-down boxes, thus the entire shipment being' made Without the boxes `occupying the Very considerable amount of space as would be the case if they were shipped in completed condition from the manufacturer to the user or packer.

Vhat I desire to claim is:

l. A foldable box having a bottom, side and end Wall members hinged to the edges of said bottom, said side and end Wall members havingtheir ends complementarly rebatcd so as to form mutual stops to position the side and end Walls accurately in erected position, the outer meeting` edges of said side and end Walls being straight and concealing the joint formed by the rebated portions, and corner fasteners adapted to be applied to the upper corners of the box formed by the erected side and end Wall members and hold said side and end Wall members in erect position, the members of said box being secured together by the bot tom hinges and the top corner fasteners.

2. A oldable box comprising integrally united bottom, side and end Wall members of paper board, said side and end Wall members being foldable along the lines of their junction with the bottom member, lining panels of Wood on the inner faces of said side and end members, the adjacent ends of said side and end panels being cut away complementally with respect to each other so as to form interengaging shoulders and rebates concealed by the paper board sides and ends When erected, and corner fasteners adapted to be applied to the upper corners of the box to hold said side and end Wall members in erected position.
