Description

E. M. KN'UDSEN.
COMBINED BOTTLE BAIL AND COVER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 9. l9l9.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
UNITED STATES raTENT OFFICE.
EDWARD MICHAEL KNUDSEN, OF ASI-ILAND, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED BOTTLE BAIL AND COVER.
To all whom it may concem 7 Be it known that I, EDWARD M. lixUnsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bottle Bails and Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottle-covers, and it relates more specifically to an improved construction constituting a combined bottlebail and cover.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved device for closing, opening and carrying milk-bottles.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is very effective, strong, durable and convenient.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which consists of very few and simple parts, these parts being of such construction that the device can be manufactured at a very low cost.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of one of my improved devices applied to a bottle neck, the latter being in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that it shows the bail member prior to being closed upon the pivots of the bottle and bottle-cover. I
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, the section being taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the device comprises a bail 5 which is formed integrally with a pair of depending jaws 6 and a pair of depressions or pivot sockets 7 in its lower ends. WVhen a bottle of special construction is employed, such bottle is formed with diametrically opposed projections or pivots 8 which engage with the sockets orpivot-bearings 7. The specially constructed bottle is formed'with a downwardly converging cover seat 9, and a cover 10 has a downwardly converging periphery which fits the seat 9 and is normally Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d D 238 1.320 Application filed June 9, 1919.

disposed therein. The cover 10 is provided with an upwardly extending arm 11 which may be formed integrally therewith or secured thereto by any appropriate means, and pivots or lumps 12 are preferably formed on the arm 11 and extend in opposite directions. Each of the jaws 6 is formed with a socket or pivot-bearing 13 to receive a corresponding one of the pivots 12.
The elements 5 and 6 are preferably formed of malleable and somewhat springy metal, and the bases of the jaws 6 are preferably thicker and more rigid than the part let between the bases of the jaws, so that when the jaws 6 are pressed together from the spaced relation shown in Fig. 2 to that which is shown in Fig. 1, the part 141- is bent and becomes permanently set in the shape shown in Fig. 1. That is, the jaws 6 are set in engagement with the pivots 12, and the sockets 7 are in the oosition for engaging with the pivots 8. I- owever, because of the arms of the bail 5 being very much longer than the portion 1 1, these arms may be sprung apart sufficiently to permit engagement and disengagement of their sockets with the pivots 011 the bottle neck without separating the arms 6 sufficiently to disengage the pivotal connections 12 and 13. It will be seen, therefore, that the members 5, including the elements 6, may be formed integrally in the shape shown in Fig. 2, and that the cover 10 and arm 11, including the pivots 12 may be formed integrally; and in assembling these members, the jaws 6 and arm 11 may be placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, and pressure may then be applied at the points and in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, thereby moving the sockets 13 into engagement with the pivots 12. and the same operation moves the sockets 7 into the position for being sprung apart to engage with the pivots 8, and it will be seen that the number of parts and manufacturing operations are reduced to the minimum.
In using the device, having pivotally connected it to the bottle as indicated in Fig. 1, the cover 10 is effectually held in its closing position so long as the bail 5 is in its vertical position; but when the bail is turned on its pivots 8, as shown in Fig. 3, the cover 10 is also turned, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that milk may be poured from the bottle, and by swinging the bail to the full-line position shown in Fig. 3, the cover is thereby moved to its bottle-closing position.
Although this embodiment of my invention is described very specifically, it is not intended to limit the invention to a bottle formed integrally with pivots, nor to the other details of construction, arrangement and material specifically described in the foregoing, but changes may be made within the scope of the inventive ideas evidenced by the following claims.
hat I claim as my invention is: i
1. The combination of a bottle-bail formed integrally with two depending jaws having opposite depressions therein, and a bottle-cover having an upwardly extending arm thereon, said arm having oppositely extending projections thereon, said projections being seated in said depressions of said jaws and therewith forming a pivotal connection.
2. The combination of a bottle-cover having an upwardly extending arm, and a malleable body comprising a bail and adapted to be pivotally connected to a bottle and also comprising a pair of depending jaws which are spaced from one another and adapted to be pivotally connected to said arm, the base portions of said arms being more rigid than the part of the bail between said base portions, so that by pressing the jaws toward one another, the pivotal connection of said body with said bottle and arm is efiected.
EDWARD MICHAEL KNUDSEN.
