Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 28, 192() Application led April 25, 1919. Serial No. 292,578.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES B. HUMA- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burning Forges, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to oil burning forges and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an oil burner with vaporizing means and means for supplying oil and air to the burner and means for confining the heat produced and reflecting it onto the burner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tank for containing both the oil and air supply with means for regulating the supply of either to the burner.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a furnace lined with ire brick, or the like, and having a portion inclosing the burner and an open part for receiving the articles to be heated by the flame from the burner.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the Several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the invention;

Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal central section of the burner comprised in the apparatus;
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same.
In these views 1 indicates a Stand which may be constructed of any desired material and of any suitable type. This stand supports the furnace 2 which may be composed of a casing 3 of metal, containing the fire brick lining 4. The furnace is provided with a chamber 5, which extends across the center thereof, and with a recess 6 in one end. As shown, the ends and top of the chamber are open and the recess opens out The chamber is provided with the low end walls 7 which for supports for the articles to be heated.
rlhe burner 8 is located in the recess 6 and this burner is so arranged that the flame will be projected into the chamber and against the bottom and end walls of the same so that these parts of the fire brick w1ll ybe intensely vheated and the heat will be reflected therefrom onto the burner so as to facilitate the gasification of the oil. The burner comprises a coupling 9 which 1s connected with the air supply pipe 10. This coupling also carries the burner tube 11 which has the nozzle 12 at its outer end. The oil vaporizing coil 13 surrounds the outer end of said nozzle tube and extends in front of the same and said coil has one end connected with the oil supply pipe 14 and its other end is bent backwardly as at 15 and is connected with the elbow 16 connected with the coupling 9. Thus the oil and air are delivered to the interior of the coupling 9, which forms a mixing chamber so that the same are thoroughly mixed before being delivered to the nozzle. The oil in the coils will be vaporized by the heat of the flame projected from the nozzle and also by the heat reflected onto the burner from the walls of the furnace.
A tank 17 is carried by the frame 1 below the furnace and this tank is adapted to con-y tainl the oil and air which may be supplied to the tank by the pipe 18 which is connected with any suitable source of compressed air or compressor. The oil is supplied through the top of said pipe by removing the tap 19. The pipe 18 is supplied with a valve 20. The air pipe 10 is connected with the top of the tank by the pipes 21 and the coupling 22. The oil pipe 14 is connected with the tank by the pipes 23, the coupling 24 and the pipe 25 which passes from the coupling 24 through the coupling 22 into the tank and terminates adjacent the bottom of said tank. The oil and air supply to the burner may be regulated by the valves 26 and 27.
As will be seen, the air pipe 10 passes through one end of the furnace while the oil pipe extends through one side of the furnace between the fire brick and the end of the casing. The tank Inay be supplied with a pressure gage 28 and with an oil gage 29, and the bottom of the tank may be provided with a drain cock 30,
It Will thus be seen that articles. placed in the chamber 5 and resting on the short Wall 7 thereof, Will be intensely heated by .the flame projected from the burner and as this heat is confined by the furnace, the arL ticles will be heated with the minimum amount of fuel.
The burner may be used Without the furnace if desired, and the air and oil pipes provided With flexible parts so that the burner may be moved about. In this case, however7 some form of shield must be provided to take the place of the furnace in order to confine' the heat and to reflect it upon the burner, 4
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is z- An oil burning forge comprising a furnace having a chamber extending across the same with the ends and top of the chamber open and also having a recess formed in one of the end Walls of the chamber and communicating therewith, said recess having its top closed, a burner in said recess having vaporiz'ing means and also having a nozzle directed toward the chamber, and means. for supplying liquid fuel to the vaporizing means of said burner.
