To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STANISLAUS GALwAs, a citizen of the United States of America,residing at Manistee, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for use as a stove lid lifter whereby the inconvenience and risk incident to the accidental disengagement of the lifter from a lid may be avoided while permitting of holding the lid in any desired position so that when engaged by the implement the lid may be carried with safety in any desired position or at any preferred angle, and therefore may readily be manipulated in placing it under a pot or pan which may be located upon the stove top in overlapping relation with the stove hole, and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

The device consist essentially of a main shank 10 preferably hollow with downturned sideedges to form flanges 11 and terminating at one end in a jaw 12 adapted for engagement with the usual lugs 13 in the socket 14 of a stove lid 15, the toe of the jaw being curved" as in. the ordinary practice to extend under the lugs 13 and thus position a heel portion 16 adjacent to the plane of the upper surface of the stove lid.

The downward curvature of the edges of the shank forming the flanges 11 constitutes a housing in which is mounted a pivotal handle 17 provided with a grip portion 18 adapted to be grasped simultaneously with the grip portion 19 of the main shank, and sald grip portions being preferably slotted or cut away to facilitate radiation of heat and thus maintain said grip portions at a comparatively low temperature notwithstanding the exposure of the jaw end of the shank to contact with a hot stove lid.

Pivotally mounted upon the main jaw 12 formed as a continuation of the shank 10, and extending through a slot 20 of the latter is a movable jaw 21 having a downturned tongue 22 for engagement with the stove lid lugs 13 as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and an extension forming a bearing car 23 for contact with the surface of the stove lid beyond the socket 14 therein to the end that when the movable jaw is depressed into engaging relation with the fixed or stationary jaw, the stove lid is clamped and may be carried by the implement in an inclined or reversed position if desired without the liability of disengagement or release.

The movable jaw 21 is pivotally mounted as indicated at 24: on the main shank within the housing formed by the downturned flanges 11 and is connected with the adjacent end of the pivotal handle member 17 by an intermediate link 25 pivoted as at 26 and having terminal slots 27 and 28 for engagement with pins 29 and 30 carried respectively by said handle member 17 and movable jaw 21. Also a spring 30 is preferably arranged in operative relation with said link to maintain the movable jaw in its disengaged relation with the fixed jaw as shown in Fig. 1, the movement of the handle member 17 upon its pivot 31 serving to depress the movable jaw in opposition to the action of the spring 30.

It will be noted that the entire apparatus may be struck out of sheet metal as by a stamping process and therefore can be made at a minimum cost, the expense of assembling the parts being minimized by reason of the various mountings consisting merely of transverse pivot pins, and that when the same is engaged with a stove lid the latter is positively clamped by the jaws so as to provide for the handling of the same without the risk incident to the use of the ordinary stove lifter which is designed and adapted merely to engage under the lugs 13 without affording any means of preventing said lid from tilting or assuming an angu- 1 lar position or from slipping from the extremity of thetoe of the implement, especially in the event that said lugs should have become somewhat worn or warped out of their normal positions.

What is claimed is:

A stove lid lifter having a shank provided at one end with a fixed jaw and at the other end with a grip, a movable jaw pivotally mounted upon the fixed jaw and extending forwardly over the same for cooperation therewith in engaging the surface of a stove lid engaged by the fixed j aw, a pivotal handle'memloer mounted upon the shank and having a grip portion arranged adj acent to the grip of the shank, a link pivoted at a substantially intermediate point in its length and disposed between the pivotal aw and pivotal handle and provided at both extremities with terminal slots, pins carried respectively by the pivotal jaw and by the pivotal handle and engaging in the slots in said link, and a spring straddling saidlink and encircling the pivot thereof and having its terminals bearing respectively against the shank and the said link in the manner and for the purpose specified.
