MARKING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed March 16, 1920. Serial No. 366,256.
. To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, IViLLiAM C. MonGANs,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented' a new and Im- -proved- Marking Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements 1n marking apparatus, an object of the inven-4 tionbeing to provide improved means for burning identification characters in furs or skins of any character.
A further object is to provide an apparatus of the characterstated which Will form .characters in the skin which cannot be obliterated by the ordinary tanning process.
With these and other objects in view the invention yconsists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, asV will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my improved apparatus in operation;
Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan View of one of the stencils; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view illustrating the Skin after it is marked.
My improved apparatus comprises a stencil or stencils 1 and an electric punch or needle 2. The stencils l are made With perforations 3 of a size to ,receive the burning point 4 on the electric needle and guide the same into contact With the skin 5 located below the stencil. The electric needle or punch 2 has a covering or handheld-6 of insulation and the point 4 is electrically connected with circuit Wires 7 so as to heat the point to the necessary degree for burning the skin.
The stencils l are preferably of metal and the peiforat'ions 3 thereof preferably form letters so that any desired arrangement of such stencils can be made to form a name or other word, or monogram to identify the skin;Y
In operation, the stencils are `located on the skin side of a fur orother hidefand the hot point 4 of the electric needle or punch 2 is inserted through the perforations 3 and operates to burn into or through the skin 5 so that when the needle has been positioned in all of the perforations, the character Will be burned into the skin. These burned recesses or openings in the skinwill not Aclose or be materially affected in any other Way bythe .tanning operation so that the finished skin will still contain an identifying mark.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described Without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, `but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a skin marking apparatus, the combination with a stencil having perforations therein and adapted to be located against the skin, of an electric punch, a hot point at the lower end of the punch adapted to pass through said perforatons, and a flange around the punch above the hot point adapted to engage said stencil `and limit the movement of the hot point through the perforations.
WILLIAM CHARLES MORGANS.
