Description
F. J. KLINE.
PAPER FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED FEB. 25, 1920.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920 l T an INVENTOR ATTORN FRED J". KLINE, OF NEW YORK, .11. Y.
PAPER-FASTENER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, iaao.
Application filed February 25, 1920; Serial No. 361,130.;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED J. Kaine, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Fa'steners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper fasteners and particularly to that type of paper fastener disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 342,421, filed Dec. 4, 1919, and which type of fastener embodies a member having a base portion and two spaced apart tongues, and a retaining member having two slots through which the tongues can be passed and then bent down flat-on the top surface of said member.
The main object of my present invention is to provide improved means for shielding or guarding the tongues and preventing them from catching loose papers after they have been passed through a file of papers and the retaining member and bent flat'on the latter. 7
My improvements relate particularly to means for quick application and removal of the tongue-shielding means, and especially to providing such means as are of easy and convenient manipulation.
The means I prefer to use for accomplishing the above objects together with other features of my invention, are illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 of the drawing is a plan of the preferred form of my improved paper fastener, showing the tongue-shielding member in process of application.
Fig. 2 is a plan showing the fastener with the tongue-shielding member in its final position on the fastener.
Fig. 3 is'a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the tongue-shielding member.
Fig. 6 is a partial front elevation of the tongue-shielding member.
Fig. 7 is a plan of a modified form of the tongue-shielding member.
Fig. 8 is a plan of another modification of the tongueshielding member.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The first four figures of the drawing illustrate my improved paper fastener applied to a file F of papers, documents or the like. The fastener consists of a member 2 having two tongues 3 spaced apart, one at each end, which tongues are capable of being pushed through the file of papers F and through a retaining member 4 provided with perforations 5 through which the tongues are passed. The tongues 33 are then bent flat on the top of the retaining member 4 as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
The tongues?) when thus bent down are shielded or guarded from catching on loose papers by a tongue-shielding or covering member 6 which may be of any suitable form, but in this instance is made in the form of a flat rectangular piece of sheet metal preferably as illustrated in Fig. 5.
For securing the tongue-shielding or covering member 6, suitable means are provided such as projections adapted to hold the said member, and are preferably arranged 1n two rows, one row on each side of the member 4. The projections may be of any suitable form such as the lugs or hooks 9 whose overhanging portions 9 face inward, sothat the member 6 can be slid endwise under them.
To provide for quick and easy applica- 35 tion of the member 6, I provide slots such as 20 in one of the longitudinal edges of the member 6 and these slots register with the projections or hooks 9 on one side of the member 4.
To apply the covering member 6, it is first placed with its lower edge 21 under the lower row of hooks of the member 4 with the slots 20 registering with the upper hooks. It is then pushed down to the position shown in Fig. 1, after which it is slid endwise into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the tongues are then eifectivelv guarded or shielded and cannot catch on papers and other objects.
I also provide means for locking the tongue-shielding or covering member 6 in the position shown in Fig. 2, and said means are formed by making two slits 23 in the metal of the edge portion 21 and slightly raising the portions 24 beside the slits. When the member 6 is moved from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 2, the right hand portion 24 slips under the projection 9 and when it reaches the position of Fig. 2, the middle of the member 6 springs upward, and both of the portions 24 project up sufficiently to prevent further endwise movement of the member 6.
In the modification illustrated in Fig; 7
the slots are placed on both sides of the tongue-shielding member 6, and for placing the member 6 in position, it is first slipped down over the hooks 9 and then it is slid lengthwise until the wider portions 22 are under the hooks or projections 9.
The modification shown in Fig; 8 is of the same construction and operation as the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive except in the means for locking the member 6 in position. A shallow slot 25 is provided in the edge portion 21 of the member 6, and when the said member is in the position shown in Fig. 2, a slight lateralmovement of the member 6 looks the shoulders 26 against the upright portions of lower middle hook or projection 9.
What I claim is 1. A paper fastener comprising a portion having spaced apart tongues, a retaining member having tongue-shieldholding proe'ctions and having slots through which the tongues can be passed and then bent flat on said member, and a tongue shield having side slots arranged to register with the projections, said shield being adapted to slide endwise and be held under the projections.
2. A paper fastener comprising a portion having spaced apart tongues, a retaining member having tongue-shield hooks and having slots through which the tongues can be passed and then bent flat on said member, and a tongue-shield having side slots arranged to register with the hooks, said shield being adapted to slide so as to be held under said hooks.
3. A paper fastener comprising a portion having spaced apart tongues, a retaining member having slots for said tongues and tongue-shield hooks on each side, and a tongue-shield having slots on one side registering with the hooks on that side, and adapted to be held by the hooks on the opposite side, and to slide under and be held by the hooks on the slotted side.
A. A paper fastener comprising a portion having spaced apart tongues, a retaining member having tongue-shield-holding projections and having two slots through which the tongues can'be passed and then bent fiat on said member, and a tongue-shield having side slots arranged to register with the projections, said shield being adapted to slide endwise and be held under said proj ections, and having means for locking it in its final position.
5. A paper fastener comprising a portion having spaced apart tongues, a retaining member having two slots for said tongues and tongue-shield hooks on each side, and a tongue-shield having slots on one side registering with the hooks on that side and adapted to be held under the hooks on the opposite side, to slide endwise and be held under the hooks on the slotted side, and provided with means for locking it under said hooks. V
Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 13th day of February, A. D. 1920.
, FRED J. KLINE.
