Description

S. P. HOLISH,
COMBINATION TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 5, 1920.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
A TTORNEVS STEPHEN 1'. HOLISH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COHBIN ATION -'1OOL.
Speciflcation of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 28, 1920.
- Application filed April 5, 1920. Serial No. 871,488.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, S'rariinn I. HOLISH, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook'and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in ombination-Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention relates to improvements in combination tools, and it consists in the combinations, constructions. and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel tori n of combination tool which combines a plurality of tools ordinarily provided as separate implements. whereby the combination tool may be used in performing the different operations ordinarily performed by the plurality of tools with equal effectiveness and with a great saving of time and labor.
A further object of my invention.is the provision in a device of the type described, of a saw blade havinga single auxiliary member rigidly secured thereto, whereby a combination tool is formed comprising a handsaw, a square. a ruler or scale. and a bevel.
A further object of my invention is to provide a. device of the type described in which a portion of the handle is extended to serve as a guard for an auxiliary member, so that the device will not get out of order under service conditions.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device that is simple in construction, which can be operated readily, and which is thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device,
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a view of the opposite side of the device to that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of a fragmentary portion of the device, portions being broken away.
I am aware that combination tools comprising a plurality of separate tools have been in common use for some time. Such tools have been found unsatisfactory, since iliary member is rigid common use are remedied in my device by .the provision of the guard to protect the attachmentand because of the fact that only one auxiliary member is required in order that a combination tool of the charac- This auxy secured directly to the sawblade and consequently the accuracy of the device is not impaired under service conditions as is the case in the devices in use before my invention in which the auxler described may be provided.
iliary members are attached /to the sawhandle.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a saw blade 1 which may be of any desired length and type. The lower longitudinal edge is formed with teeth 2, While the upper longitudinal edge is fashioned to provide a true straight edge 3. An opening 4 is formed through the saw blade adjacent one end to provide a convenient means for hanging up the device when the same is not being used. The other end of the saw blade is disposed within a longitudinal slot 5 provided in a handle 13 and is maintained in position by means of screws 6, or in any other approved manner. An auxiliary member 7, which is preferably i'ormed of metal in the shape of an angle-iron, is rigidly secured to the saw blade 1 in any approved manner, as by rivets 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings. The auxiliary that an end portion 8 adjacent the toothed edge of the saw blade 1 extends laterally at an angle of 45 from the direction of the main portion of the auxiliary member 7. An opening 11 is formed through the saw blade 1 adjacent its upper edge and in such a position, with respect to the end portion 8 of the auxiliary member 7, that one side of an article, such as a nail, will be in alinemember 7 is bent intermediate its length so articlb, such as a nail, through the openin 11, it will be found that the rear edge 3 o the saw blade diver 'es from the side of the work at an angle 0? 45 and that therefore the end portion 8 of the auxiliary attachment 7 is in fact a bevel.
The handle 13 has a longitudinal portion 10 extending along the opposite side of the saw blade 1 from that to which the auxiliary member 7 is attached. It will thus be seen that the auxiliary member 10 serves as a guard to protect the auxiliary member 7 and to prevent displacement of the same under service conditions. The side of the handle 13, extending along the side of the saw blade 1 to which the auxiliarymember'7 is attached, fits closely against the upright portion of the auxiliary member 7.
When the auxiliary member 7 is formed in the shape of an angle-iron, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, one leg of the angle-arm is received within the slot 5 in the handle 13. A scale 12 is delineated along the upper edge of the saw blade 1 on the side opposite that to which the auxiliary member 7 is attached.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily "understood. When my improved combination tool is used, the operation ordinarily performed by a plurality of tools which are manufactured separately may be effectively performed. My" improved combination tool is durable and can be used indefinitely. It occupies but a small space and may be manufactured much more cheaply than the individual implements separately. l
I claim:
A combination tool comprising a handsaw blade having its rear edge formed into a true straight edgeand having a scale delineated along its upper edge on one side, said saw blade being provided with an opening formed therethrough adjacent its free end and with a second opening formed therethrough at a predetermined distance from the handle end, a saw handle rigidly secured to the saw blade, said saw handle having a longitudinal prolongation extending along the side of the saw blade upon which the scale is delineated, and an auxiliary member rigidly secured at right angles to the side of the saw blade opposite that having the scale delineated thereon, said auxiliary member being disposed adjacent the handle and having the end portion thereon remote from the straight edge portion of the saw blade bent at an angle of 45 fronr the direction of the main portion of the auxiliary member, thereby forming a bevel.
