Be it known that I, EDWIN J. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota., have invented new and useful Improvements in Belt-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to belt buckles and has for its object the provision of a belt buckle adapted for personal wear and provided with double clasps whereby both ends of a belt may be secured adjustably, a particular feature of the invention being that after a belt has been properly adjusted a slight pull thereon will cause the clamping members to firmly engage and lock the belt against movement.
An important object is the provision of a belt buckle of this character which is so constructed as to eliminate the use of the pintle pins and rollers commonly employed and which will be consequently extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is a double grip ratchet and a double ratchet buckle combined.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my belt buckle in use,

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamping members.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a belt and 11 designates the body of my device which is formed of suitable sheet metal and which is longitudinally curved to conform substantially to the curvature of the waist line of the human body. The body portion 11 may be suitably ornamented so as to present a neat and artistic appearance. This body 11 is formed U-shaped in cross section to provide side flanges 12 which have formed therein pairs of alined holes 13.
Disposed within the body 11 are clamping` members 14 which are identical in construction and each of which is formed from a single piece of sheet metal 15 provided at its ends with trunnions 16 which are disposed within the pairs of holes 13. Each clamping member is bent into the shape shown and includes a flange 17 which is formed by an abrupt bend and which eX- tends at substantially a right angle to the body portion of the clamp. Each clamp furthermore includes at its opposite edge a flange 18 which is formed by a less abrupt bend, as clearly shown.
lith the clamping members in position within the body as described, the operation of the buckle is as follows:
One end of the belt 10 is inserted within the body and between the front wall thereof and one of the clamping members. When the end of the belt is thus inserted it will engage against the flange 17 of the clamping member. After the belt has been inserted the desired distance, a slight outward pull thereon results in swinging the clamping member upon the trunnions 16 until the iange 17 engages and firmly locks against the belt thereby preventing movement thereof. It will be observed that either or both the flanges 17 and 18 may have their edges serrated, as shown. After one end of the belt is thus secured, the other end is inserted into the other end of the body and pulled as tightly as desired to effect proper adjustment, after which a slight outward pug will cause the clamping member to From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple and inexpensive belt buckle which may be easily clasped upon a belt and which avoids the use of pivot pins, rollers, and the other analagous members commonly provided. It will be observed that, owing to the peculiar construction, the end of a belt may be overlapped and held without the necessity for the employment of belt straps.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of ymy invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to'make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A buckle of the character described oomprising a body curved longitudinally and U-shaped in cross section whereby to include side ianges, said flanges being provided with pairs of holes, and clamping members disposed Within said body, each clamping member being formed from a single piece of material bent to provide a flange extending at substantially a right angle to the body of the clamp and also bent to provide a second 15 flange extending at a very obtuse angle with respect to the body of the clamp, the ends of each clamping member having formed thereon trunnions revolubly engaged Within said pairs of holes, each clamping member being 20 uniform in cross section throughout its length and having its belt engaging edge serrated.
