AM. Pnora-uryqsmpmc ca MK(OSEORVIVE:F masses) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS BURCH, OF NORTH FAIRFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,36 1, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS BURCH, of North Fairfield, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Plow and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same.
Figures 1 and 2 are side views of the invention. Fig 3 is a top view.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction and arrangement of an iron standard, colter-strap, and wood beam of a plow, all of which are so combined that said beam is firmly secured to the standard for the purpose of obtaining lightness, simplicity, and strength to the plow.
In the drawing, A represents a wooden plowbeam. B is the standard to which the beam is secured. On the upper end of the standard is formed a shoulder or rest, 0, having a flange, D at the side, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The beam rests upon said shoulder and is secured thereto by being bolted to the flange D by means of the bolts E, which bolts are also used for attaching the colter to the beam by means of the strap F on the side of the flange D, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The beam is also further fastened to the standard by the bolts G, which pass through the beam and shoulder, as seen in the drawing.
By this means the standard, beam, and colter-strap are firmly united, whereby is obtained to the plow lightness and simplicity, thereby securing all the advantages of the elasticity and lightness of the wooden plow combined with the advantages of the iron-beam plow in the matter of the largeness of the throat peculiar to the iron plow without its great liability to break, which the iron beam is very liable to when subjected to lateral strain, to which all plows necessarily are, more or less.
In this invention the colter-strap is fastened to the iron standard against the side of the flange instead of securing it to the side of the wooden beam, as is done in the common wooden plow; hence, the beam is not subject to the wearing influence of the colter, and therefore will last longer.
In this manner of attaching the colter to the beam the bolts E are made to do double duty, by securingthe beam to the standard and the colter to the beam.
The flange D'gives additional strength to the standard, and the means, in connection with the bolts, of holding the beam and colterstrap in place.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the construction of plows, the wood-beam A and iron standard B provided with the col ter-holder F, and having a shoulder, O, and flange D, in combination with screw-bolts, or their equivalents, for securing the said beam and sta ard together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
NICHOLAS BURCH.
