To all whom it may cfmceww Be it known that we, GEORGE HARRISON and ERNEST GASKELL STERNDALE BENNETT, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and both residents of the city of Moose J aw, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retorts, of which the following is a specification.
l This invention relates to improvements in retorts, particularly adapted for use in the recovery of gas from straw, and the objects of the invention are to accelerate the generation of the gas from the straw, to facilitate consuming the flue gases or products of combustion emitted from the tire chamber or furnace, and converting the same into heat, so intensifying the heat of the retort and providing for the quick and abundant generation of gas.
Further objects are to uniformly heat the retort. so that the contents will be charred uniformly and thus a maximum yield of gas will be obtained, to render the several parts easily accessible for inspection and repair, and generally to adapt the retort to better perform the functions required of it.
TVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings formingA part of the same.

Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved retort which is operatively supported in a casing 10, the retort being spaced from the walls of the casing to form smoke passageways Below the retort a grate 11 is located and extends rearwardly of the casing for part of the length thereof, and is supported by the front wall of the casing and the wall 12.
A wall 13 extends rearwardly in the casing and is angularly disposed to the Wall 12, and at the rear end of the wall 13 an intensifier 14 is located.
This intensier extends transversely across the lower end of the casing 10, as is illus- 'trated in Fig. 4, and consists of a trough comprising front andrear walls, and a bottom wall, the front and rear walls being provided with a. plurality of perforations 15, while the trough is filled with a non-combustible and heat retaining material such as asbestos.
A gas supply pipe 16 is located in the lower end of the trough, and provides means whereby the asbestos is heated to the desired temperature, for an object which will he made clear hereafter.
The retort A is cylindrical and horizontally disposed and provided with a central passageway 17 which is open from one end of the retort to the other, the rear end of the conduit communicating with the smoke passageway at the rear of the casing, the front communicating with a smoke box 18 which is formed on the front of the casing 10.
It will be seen that the retort forms an annular chamber 19 which is closed at the rear end, while the front end is provided with openings or doorways 20, the walls of which are splayed, and these openings are closed by a plurality of doors 21 of the man-hole type, the doors being secured in position by clamps 22.

3. A retort :for the production of gas from straw, comprising an annular chamber for the straw, a conduit extending longitudinally therethrough, a grate below the chamber, a trough at the rear of the grate having a filling of heat retaining material, a casing inclosing the chamber and forming smoke passageways, a Wall located at the rear of the chamber and along the sides thereof, the products of combustion being so controlled that they flow rearwardly and forwardly, and then rearwardly to the retort to uniformly heat the same.
4. A gas retort comprising an annular chamber for straw, a conduit therethrough, a pluralit7 of perforated plates extending transverse y across the conduit and arranged in pairs in spaced relation with a filling of heat retaining material for each pair of plates, a gas supply pipe having a plurality of jets each located between a pair of spaced plates, and a perforated gas oftake p ipe extending into the retort.
