Description

W. F. KIESEL, JR.
7 JOURNAL BOX LID. APPLICATION FILED AU1G.16. 1920.
1,363,324, I Patented Dec. 28,1920.
UNITED STATES TENT ounce;
Specification 0! Letters Intent. Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application me a 1c, 1920.. Serial 10. man.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wrnmrr Krasnn,
Jr, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Altoona, Blair county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal-Box I ids, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lids for journal boxes of railway cars.
It is the object of the invention to provide a construction in which the hinge members of the lid may be easily and quickly applied'to the plate forming the body of the lid' and in which only a single rivet is necessary to secure these parts together. These objects are attained by providing the hinge members and the body plate with interengaging portions so arranged as to prevent relative movement between these parts when the same are assembled and by fur-- ther providing each of the hinge members with a portion which extends above the upper surface of the plate and which is secured thereto by a single rivet extending through the plate.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan 'view'partly in section of a lid embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view-on the line 3--3 of Fi 1.
ReEerring to the drawings in detail, 10 represents the body plate forming the main portion of the lid, this plate being provided with parallel ribs or corrugations 11 adjacent the sides thereof and with a transverse rib or corrugation 12 extending across its lower end and connectingthe ribs 11. The
plate 10 is preferably made of pressed steel and these ribs are formed therein for the purpose of giving rigidity to the same. A fiat spring 13 is secured to said plate in any suitable manner, this spring being of the ordinar construction and serving to hold the lid 111 a closed or open position.
The hinge members 15 are secured to the edge of the plate 10 and such hinge members are provided with aliued openings 16.
through which a bolt or pin may be inserted for fastening the lid to the journal box of.
a. car.
The present invention relates particularly to the construction employed for securing the members to the plate and this constructlon 18 preferably the same in the case of both of the hinge members. Referrmg particnlarl to F 2 and the sectioned portion of ig. 1, it will be'seen that each of said hinge members 15 on its under side is provided with a lip 17 which is slightly spaced from the body of said member by which construction a recess 18 is formed between the lip and the body of the member. This recess is adapted to receive the edge of the plate 10, the recess belng of such width that the plate will closely fit the same and up and down movement of the plate relative to the hinge member will therefore be prevented, when the edge of the plate is engaged in the recess 18. The inner wall 19 of the recess as shown in Fig. 1 projects outwardly and in the particular form shown comprises a plurali of straight surfaces angularly disposed wit relation to each other. It is evident, however, that such inner wall of the recess may be curved or be made of any other contour desired. It will be understood that the edge of the plate 10 extending into the recess 18 is cut away or shaped to fit the outwardly projecting inner wall- 19 of said recess. The
purpose of this construction is to prevent sidewise movement of the hinge member relative to the sembled.
Instead of arranging the innerwall of the recess so as to project outwardly it is evident that such wall ma projectinwardly to form a socket at the ase of the recess and that the plate may be provided with a. suitable tongueror lug for engaging in the socket thus formed.
The hinge members 15 are also provided with portions 15 which extend over the upper surface of the plate 10, such portions preferably being bent upwardly or suitably shaped to fit over the ribs 11 formed on the plate. The upper surfaces ofsaid ribs 11 are preferably flat and the portions 15 of the hinge members are also preferably made flat to engage such flat port ons of the ribs.
The hinge members are each secured to the plate 10 by means of a single rivet 20 which passes through the portion 15 of the hinge members and through the ribs 11, formed on the plate 10,
plate when the parts are as- .plate.
It will thus be seen that .the foregoing construction provides an arrangement by which the hinge members of the lid may be easily and quickly applied to the plate and which requires the use of only a single rivet. The arrangement is also such that the huge members are held in rigid relation to the plate and the use of a plurality of rivets or otherfasteni'ng means is avoided.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
