IMPROVEMENT IN ADDRESSING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,323, dated February Q5, 1873.
To all ywhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEON HoLToN, of Middlebury, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Addressing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a mailing or addressing machine,77 as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section, of my machine.
A represents the bed of the machine, upon which is a suitable frame-work, B, to contain the Working parts. a is the main d1" ing-shaft provided with a pulley, C, to be connected with the power for operating` the machine. On the shaft a are two cams, D and E, and a crank, G. The crank G is, by a rod, b, connected with a lever, H, placed loosely upon the ljournal of a roller, I, and on this lever is pivoted a pawl, d, which works in a ratchet-wheel, J, firmly secured on the same journal. c is a spring for holding the pawl into the ratchetwheel. Above and upon the roller I is another roller, I', held by means of springs fj' operating` upon its journals, down upon the lower roller, and between said two rollers the namestrip is fed forward as the shaft a revolves, by means of the crank-and-ratchet device revolving the lower roller. The cam E operates a lever, K,.by means of an arm, 7L, attached to said lever. One end of the lever K is secured to a rocking shaft, Il, in rear of the drivingshaft, while the front end supports the pastereservoir M, which slides up and down upon two vertical rods, L' It'. In the bottom of the reservoir M is a strainer, i, through which the paste is let out in the right quantity at every downward stroke of the reservoir. The cam E, by means of the lever K, raises the pastereservoir, and once during each revolution ot' the driving-shaft, as the arm a reaches the notch in the cam, the reservoir falls down and pastos one name on the name-strip;
The cam D operates the cutting-device by means of a lever, N, which is, by a rod, m, connected with a rocking shaft, 0, and to this shaft is secured a lever, P, carrying at its outer or rear end a blade or cutter, a. As the driving-shaft revolves the lever P is raised, and once during each revolution, when the lever N enters the notch in the cam, a spring, p, draws the lever I downward suddenly and forcibly, so that the name will be cut off the name-strip by the blade a on the lever coming` incontra-ct with a stationary blade or cutter, s, the name-strip being between said cutters.
The mechanism for delivering the labels aft-er being cut oft' is not shown in this application, it being no part of this invention, but any convenient form of mechanism may be used, as in machines of this character.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The pasting mechanism consisting of the ca-m.E on the driving-shaft n., lever K, and paste-reservoir M with strainer fz', all constructed and operating, substantially a-'s and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the feeding device, consisting of crank'G, shaft a., rod b, lever H, pawl d, spring c, wheel J, and rollers I I, the pasting mechanism consisting of cam E, lever 7.', reservoir m, and strainer i, and the cuttingmechanism consisting of cam D, lever N, rod in, sha-ft O, lever P, spring p, and cutters a s, as and for the purpose herein set fort-h.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMEON IIOLTON. Witnesses JAMES M. SLADE, EvEnE'r'r P. HoLroN.
