To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. TER- RELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Covington, in the county of Newton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Filing-Machine Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of an attachment for a filing machine such as is adapted particularly for use in filing the teeth of cotton gin saws.
The principal object of the invention is to provide strong, simple, durable, inexpensive and thoroughly practical and eflicient means for feeding the saws in a step by step man ner so as to cause the filing and gumming mechanism to act on all of the teeth in a uniform and accurate manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the adjustment of the feed mechanism so as to cause it to accommodate itself to varying characters of saws which are to be filed and gummed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for permitting a certain amount of lost motion in the feed mechanism, whereby the necessity for a fine adj ustment of the operating mechanism of the feed attachment is avoided.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the frame of a filing and gumming machine for gin saw blades, the filing and gumming mechanism being omitted and the feed attachment of the present invention being shown in position upon the frame. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the slotted bracket in which the crank sprocket is adjustably mounted. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4: of Fig. 6. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the means for adjusting one end of the connecting rod which operates the mechanism. Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of a portion of the toothed feed disk and the feed mechanism operating thereon.
Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
In view of the fact that the filing and gumming mechanism forms no part of the present invention, it has been deemed unnecessary to illustrate and describe the same herein, and the improvements of the present invention have therefore been illustrated in connection with merely the frame 1 of the gumming and filing machine. The frame 1 at the forward end thereof is provided with suitable supporting means or brackets 2 on which the arbor or mandrel 3 carrying the saw blades 4: is journaled. Detachably and adjustably mounted upon the arbor 3 is a toothed disk 5 which is provided with a hub or collar 6 surrounding the arbor 3 and having a set screw 7 which serves to hold the toothed disk 5 in proper position upon the mandrel.
It is to be understood that the toothed disk 5 is to be of the same size and is to have the same number of teeth as the saw blade 4. If necessary, the toothed disk 5 is removed and a new one substituted when such substitution is necessary to preserve the proper relationship between the toothed disk 5 and the saw blade 4. By loosening the set screw 7 the toothed disk can be adjusted so that its teeth will lie in the same position as the teeth on the saw blade 4. The result is that by moving the toothed disk 5 one step, a new set of teeth on the saw blades 5 are presented to the action of the filing and gumming mechanism.
The improvements of the present invention include a plate 10 which is provided at its rear end, as shown in Fig. 2 with a laterally off-set portion 11 detachably bolted or otherwise secured at 12 to the frame of the machine. Extending upward from the laterally off-set portion 11 is a post or standard 14 which, as shown in Fig. 3, is vertically slotted at 16 and has adjustably mounted therein a stud shaft 17 which is locked in adjusted position by means of a nut 18. .Journaled upon the stud shaft 17 is a sprocket wheel 20 which is rotated by means of a chain 21 from a small sprocket Wheel 22 mounted upon the main driving shaft 23 of the machine, said shaft 23 being journaled in bracket supporting means 24 at the rear end of the machine. The main driving shaft 23 is utilized to drive the gumming and filing mechanism, not shown. The sprocket wheel 22 preferably, although not essentially, has half as many teeth as the sprocket wheel 20.
Fixed eccentrically upon the sprocket wheel 20 is a stud 26 with which is connected a pivotal socket member 27 having therein a threaded socket 28 shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. Threaded into the socket 28 is a connecting rod 29 which is provided on the threaded end 30 thereof with a lock nut 31. At its opposite end, the connecting rod 29 is reversely threaded into another pivotal socket member 27 which is connected with a stud 33 fixed on the lower end of a pair of arms 34-34, Fig. 4, of a link 35 which is fulcrumed at 36 upon the upper end of a pair of parallel standards 3737 mounted on the forward end of the plate 10. Fulcrumed at 40 intermediate the ends of the link 35 is a forwardly extending pawl 41 which engages the toothed disk 5 and moves the same in a step by step manner.
Journaled at 45 on the outside of the standards 37 is a pair of arms 46 which are integrally connected with each other by a cross piece 47 as shown in Fig. 2 and are provided with a forwardly extending pawl member 48 which engages the teeth of the disk 5 and serves to prevent any accidental rearward movement thereof. The pawl 48 engages a portion of the disk 5 adjacent the end of the pawl 41 so that when said pawl 41 is retracted an excessive distance, it can member engaging said toothed disk, a link slide up upon the upper surface of the pawl 48.
Constructed as described, the operation of the machine is as follows :The rotation of the main shaft 23 which drives the gumming and filing mechanism, is transmitted through the sprocket chain 21 to the sprocket wheel 20 and from the wheel 20 power is transmitted through the connecting rod 29 to the links 35 and pawl 41. In the embodiment of invention illustrated, after the main shaft has made two rotations to operate the gumming and filing mechanism, the toothed disk .5 and saw blades 4 are moved one step. By reason of the fact that the pawl 41 on its rearward movement rides up the surface of the pawl 48, it is unneces sary to arrange the mechanism in such manner as to cause the pawl 41 to move only the distance which it is desired to move the disk 5, and the mechanism of the improved attachment is thus greatly simplified. Whenever it is desired to alter or adjust the throw of the pawl 41, it is merely necessary to loosen the lock nut 31 and rotate the reversely threaded connecting rod 29.
The improvements of the present invention are exceptionally practical and eflicient in carrying out the purposes for which they are designed.
What is claimed as new is 1. Feed mechanism for gin saw filing machines including a pivotally mounted link, means for actuating said link, an active pawl pivotally connected with said link, and a passive pawl serving as a guide for said active pawl.
2. Feed mechanism for gin saw filing machines including .a support, a link pivotally connected with the support, means for actuating the link, an active pawl pivotally connected with said link, and a passive pawl pivotally connected with said support and serving as a guide for said active pawl.
3. Feed mechanism for gin saw filing machines including a support, a link .pivotally connected with said support, a connecting rod for actuating said link, means for adjusting the length of said .adjusting rod, an active pawl pivotally connected with said link, and a passive pawl pivotally connected with said support below the active pawl and serving as a guide for said active pawl, said passive pawl and said active pawl being curved from end to end.
4. The combination with a saw arbor, of a toothed disk mounted thereon and having a collar provided with .a set screw engaging said arbor, a supporting plate having a pair of standards, a pair of arms pivoted on the outside of said standards, and having an integral cross piece provided with a pawl pivotally connected with the upper .ends of said standards and havinga pair ofdependber pivotally connected with the lower end of said link, a connecting rod threaded into said socket member .and having a lock nut thereon, a threadedsocket member connected with the rear .end of said connecting rod,
a sprocket wheelihaving an eccentric stud connected wlth sa d last mentioned socket member, and means for driving said sprocket wheel.
