Be it known'that we, ROBERT Y. BARROWS and GEORGE H. HARMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey,

and residing at Glen Ridge, county of Essex,

and State of New Jersey, respectively, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Powder and Rouge Containers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in cases or boxes adapted to contain face-powder and rouge compacts; and, the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of double compartment case or box in combination with a novel cooperating pufi-member.

The invention has for its principal object to provide an attractive, convenient and simple construction of combination double compartment case and cooperating puifmember; the same comprising a pair of shells 0r body-members hinged together so as to mutually close one upon the other, each shell or body member providing a compartment adapted to hold a compact, and being further provided with means for retaining the compacts in place, there being combined in novel relation to said case a removable puff-member, which serves, in addition to its ordinary functions, as a partition between the compacts when the box or case is closed, and which possesses a finger-piece adapted to project exteriorly of the box or case, when the latter is closed, to also serve as a'means for suspending the box or case from a chain, or other desired form of carrying means.

ith the various objects of the invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel combined double compartment case and puff-member hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as Well as in the details of the construction of said parts, all

of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodled in the claims appended thereto.

Said shell or body member 2 is provided at its open periphery or mouth with an inwardly off-set cover engaging bezel 6, which telescopes into the open end of said shell or body member 3, when the shells or body members are mutually closed one upon the other, thus preventing lateral displacement or separation of said parts when thus closed.

The said shells orbody members 2 and 3 are mutually pivoted together, to swing apart one from the other, by means of a hinge member 7, suitably secured to the adjoining sides thereof. The bezel 6 of said shell or body member 2 is provided, at a point diametrically opposite'the hinge connection, with an outwardly pressed catch nosing 8, and, in like manner, the marginal portion of the side wall of said shell or bod member 3 is provided with a correspon ingly located catch receiving member 9, which snaps over said catch nosing 8 when said shells or body members are closed together, to thereby hold the same in their mutually closed relation. I

One shell or body member, for example the shell 3, has its face wall cut away to provide an opening 10 surrounded by a flange or margmal bezel 11', against the inner side of which is seated a mirror 12, so that the face of the same is exposed through said opening 10. Said mirror 12 is retained in operative position by means of a suitable inlay plate 13 secured within the bottom of said shell 3 behind said mirror.

Each shell or body member is provided in its side walls, and suitably located with reference to the size and thickness of the compacts, with an annular outwardly pressed member 16 providing a groove for seating and holding a spring retaining ring 17 adapted to engage the edges of the respective compacts to thereby retain the latter against accidental displacement from" proper seated relation within said compartments. While such form of compact retaining means is convenient, we do not necessarily limit ourselves to-the same specifically, since various forms and arrangements of mechanical means for such purpose may be employed with equal success.

Primarily said novel puff-member comprises'a double faced puff-body 18, having means for flexibly stiffening the same, and a novel arrangement of finger piece 19 projecting outwardly from its edge. When said puff-member is operatively associated with the case, and the latter is closed, the puff-body 18 will lie intermediate the faces of the compacts 14 and 15, with one of its faces adapted to be engaged operatively with one compact, and its other face adapted to be engaged operatively with the other compact, and in such position the puff-body 18 provides a partition-like member between the compacts. When thus arranged the finger-piece 19 projects exteriorly from the side walls of the case shells; the side wall of the shell 2 is provided at its free edge with a suitably located cut out portion or notch 20 embracing said finger-piece 19 from one side, while the side wall of the shell 3 is provided at its free edge with a correspondingly located cut out portion or notch 21 embracing said finger-piece 19 from the op posite side, thus permitting said fingerpiece 19 to project outwardly from the closed case. The outer extremity of said finger-piece 19 is preferably provided with an enlarged portion 22 having a perforation or opening 23, so that a suspending cord, chain or the like 24 may be attached thereto. It will thus be apparent that when the case is closed with the puff-member in proper association therewith, the same may be readily suspended for carrying by the exteriorly projected end of the finger-piece 19, thus affording a very compact, neat and attractive combined case and putt for the purposes set forth.

In its detail construction the puff-member involves certain novel structural features, which combine to render the same admirably adapted for the several purposes served thereby in the combined case and puff. In the first place, since the puff-member is designed to be used with both the white powder compact and the red or tinted rouge compact, it must be provided with two operative faces, the one face serving for the powder and the opposite face for the rouge, and at the same time while it is highly desirable that the puff-body 18 be stiff enough to retain its generally flat disk-like shape, it must, nevertheless be rendered sufficiently flexible to readily permit the same, when grasped by the finger-piece 19, to yield or flex so that the desired operative face may be caused to en age the skin of the user with ease. To this end the puff-body 18 is comprised of two disk-like members, made of velour, or any other suitable fabric or material, the same being sewn together at their peripheries, so as to provide an interior pocket. Inclosed within the interior pocket, thus provided is a thin sheet of resiliently flexible material 25, such, for example, as thin sheet metalof desired temper. This sheet 25 serves not only to retain the puff-body in normal flat disk-like shape, but renders the same flexible in use, while readily returning to normal fiat form when use is discontinued. The finger-piece 19, is preferably made of a metal body doubled upon itself to provide a pair of opposed jaws 26, having inwardly'projecting teeth 27 around their edges. The puff-body 18, formed as above described is inserted to extend partially between said jaws 26, the latter then being forced together to cause the teeth 27 toengage in the puff-body l8, and firmly grip the same. The jaws 26 are held in the described puff-body gripping position by a rivet 28 which securely holds the two parts of the finger-piece together. I

The functions desired of the puff-body may also be obtained by the construction illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, in which the detail structure is somewhat modified. In this form the double faced puffbody 18 providing an interior pocket, is rovided with a finger-piece 29 having an inner tongue 30, which is inserted within the pocket. Connected with said tongue is a flexible hoop 31, preferably made of spirally coiled wire, the ends of which are engaged and secured to said tongue 30, at a point adjacent to the exteriorly projecting portion of the finger-piece 29, by means of anchor lugs 32,'which are integrally formed in con nection with said tongue 30, and which are turned over and clenched about the ends of said 1100 to anchor the same to the fingerpiece. n this construction the hoop tends to hold the puff-body to its normal flat disklike shape, while readily permitting the free edge of the same to flex when in use.

We are aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction compact-receiving compartment, the same being hinged together to close one upon the other, a puff-member adapted to be inclosed within said case intermediate the compartments formed by said body members, said pufi-member having a finger piece extending outwardly from the periphery thereof, and the meeting edges of said body members having opposed notches forming an opening permitting the exterior projection of said finger-piece when said body members are closed together.

2. A double compartment case comprising a pair of body members each providing a compact-receiving compartment, a hinge means pivotally interconnecting said body members so that the same may be mutually closed one upon the other, a removable double-faced puff-member inclosed within said case to lie between and separate the compacts seated respectively in said compartments, a finger-piece connected with said puff-member to project. outwardly from the periphery thereof, and the meeting edges of. said body members having opposed notches embracing said finger-piece to permit the latter to project exteriorly from the case when the body members are closed together.

A double compartment case comprising a pair of opposed and pivotally interconnected body members adapted to close one upon the other, each body member providing member having a finger-piece extending outwardly from its periphery, and the meeting edges of said body-members having opposed notches embracing said finger-piece to permit the latter to project exteriorly from the .case when the body members'are closed to- ,gether.

4. A double compartment case comprising a pair of opposed and pivotally interconnected body members adapted to be closed one upon the other, each-body member providing a compact receiving compartment,

means connected with each body member for holding a compact in the compartment formed thereby, a removable double face'd puff-member normally disposed between said compartments and the compacts therein, said puff member having a finger-piece extending outwardly from. its periphery, means embedded in said pufl-member to render the same resiliently flexible, and the meeting edges of said body members having opposed notches embracing said finger-piece to permit the latter to project exteriorly from the case when the body members are closed together.

5. A double compartment casecomprising a pair of opposed and pivotally interconnected body members adapted to close one upon the other, each body member providing a compact receiving compartment, a removable double faced puff-member normally disposed between said compartments and the compacts thereof, said puff-member having a finger-piece extending outwardly from its periphery, the meeting edges of said body members having opposed notches embracing said finger-piece to permit the latter to project exterio'rly from the case when the body members are closed together, and said exteriorly projecting end of said finger-piece having a perforate portion for the attachment of a case suspension and carrying means thereto.

6. A double compartment case comprising a pair of opposed and pivotally interconnected body members adapted to close one upon the other, each body member providing a compact receiving compartment, one of sa1d body members having an opening n ing, means place, a removable double faced 'pufl' mem-.

As a sub-combination, a double faced pufi? member, means embedded within said pufl member to render the same resiliently flexible, a finger-piece comprising a body doubled upon itself to providea pair of opposed gripping jaws between which the puff member is engaged to permit said finger-piece to project outwardly from the periphery of said puff member, and means for securing said jaws in grip ing position, said jaws having a lura ity of inwardly projecting teeth isposed around their edges.
