Description

UNITE@ STATES PATENT FFICE.
LARKIN T. ATKINS, OF LURAY, VIRGINIA.
MACHINE FOR G-AGING, IVIEASURING, 85o., STAVES.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 13,631, dated October 9, 1855.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LARKIN T. A'rKINs, of t-he county of Page and State ot Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Beveling, Measuring, and Bilging Staves and for Jointing Shingles and Barrel-Heading; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in attaching to a strong wooden frame two gages so constructed and arranged as to bevel, measure,
and bilge staves, and joint shingles and heading.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct a frame work of wood of the form and dimensions as shown in the accompanying drawings. At one end, A, A, is attached two oblong boards or jaws 33 l2 inches, the tops of which are shod with two plates of polished steel, I), having the proper bevel and bilge of the stave. To the outer jaw are attached two metallic springs for the purpose of opening the jaws to receive the staves E. A leather strap attached to a treadle, F, and passing over a rubber connects with the outer jaw, which causes the jaws to closelwhen the treadle ispressed down with the foot of the operator. In the center of the frame are placed four vibratory arms, C, C, worked by a small weight. These arms pass into the jaws and receive the staves upon their ends, and are for the purpose oi disengaging the staves from the jaws when they are opened. The treadle is held down by a ratchet placed in the side of the frame. The arrangement for jointing heading and shingles B, B, attached to the other end of the frame is similar in its construction and operations to that just described, with this exception, the edges of the steel plates are straight, and not bilged or beveled as the first. I use with my invention a knife of peculiar construction, having two cutting edges and the upper face beveled.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of treadles, clamps, and vibratory arms or levers, operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth above.
LARKIN T. ATKINS.
