ENGRAVING OR EMBOSSING MEANS.
Patented Dec 21,1920.
Application filed March 20, 1920. Serial No. 367,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A. DRUOKER, WILLIAM SIECK, Jr., and SAMUEL DRUOKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Engraving or Embossing Means, of which the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to improvements in engraving or embossing means, particularly adapted though not necessarily limited in its use with printing presses of the Gordon type, one of the objects of the invention being to provide an improved mechanism of this character embodying a pivotally mounted die holder and means adapted to shift the die holder and the die for inking and wiping purposes, and which means is also adapted to move the die holder about its pivot into a position to move with the impression member of the press and cause an imprint to be made from the .die.
A further object isto provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, durable, and cheap inconstruction and effective and efficient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful ob jects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevationof a Gordon type of press, having an attachment connected therewith constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention.
. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view'taken on line 2-2 with parts omitted.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the reciprocating bed of the press. which is provided at its upper end with spaced bearings 2, and is reciprocable in any suitable manner such as by means of a link 1* one end of which is pivotally connected as at 1 to the support 1, and the other end is pivotally'connected with a crank pin 1 of a rotatable element 1.
A die chuck or holder 3 is provided for holding an engraving or embossing die 4 and the die holder has connected therewith a shaft 5 which is journaled in the bearings 2 and by means of which shaft and bearing the die holder 3 is adapted to be given a rotatable or pivotal movement with respect to the bed 1, while at the same time the die holder 3 is adapted for a reciprocating movement with the bed.
Connected with the end of the shaft 5 is an arm or lever 6 which may beprovided at its free end with a roller 7.
Connected with the press is a supporting frame 8 which preferably extends above the press and is provided for the purpose of supporting the mechanism which cooperates .with the die 41. To the inside surface of the supporting frame 8 is attached a cam-shaped rail or guide 9 with which the roller 7 on the arm 6 cooperates so as to be moved thereover. The cam or rail 9 is of such a configuration as to cause the die holder 3 to assume a substantially horizon tal position as'shown in Fig. 1 of the ,drawing when the bed 1 of the press has moved a predetermined distance away from the platen .10, and it causes the die holder to drop down or move into an impression position between the bed 1 and the platen 10, when the bed of the press has moved a'predetermined distance toward the platen. The cam or rail 9 is also of such a configuration as to cause' the die holder 3 to move into 'a substantially horizontal position during the first part of the movement of the bed 1 away from the platen, to remain in this position until the completion of the movement of the bed in the same direction and for a part of the movement of'the bed 1 toward the platen, at which time the cam rail 9 will cause the die holder 3 to drop down intoa position for making the impression during the last portion of the movement of the bed toward the platen.
Supported in any suitable manner by the supporting frame 8 is an inking roller 11 of the ordinary and well-known construction and which receives its supply of ink from a suitable fountain 12. The inking roller 11 is arranged adjacent the path of movement of the die 4: when in a horizontal position and operates to distribute the ink over the surface of the die 4 when the same passes under the inking roller either in the backward or forward movement of the bed 1. Arranged also along the path of movement of the die 1 is a wipin block 13 of the usual type, ahd over which block passes a strip of paper or other suitable material 14 for the purpose of wiping the excess ink.
from the die."
Obviously, and if desired, any suitable means. may be provided for intermittently advancing the strip 14 so as to present a clean surface to the die 4 during the wiping operation.
It is thought that the operation of this invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing description but briefly stated it is as follows:
As the bed 1 moves from the platen 10, the roller 7 engages the rail or cam 9 causing the lever 6 to rotate the shaft 5. This will in turnbring the die holder 3 which is connected with the shaft 5, into substantially a horizontal position and in which position the die 4 contained in the die holder 3 will pass under the roller 11 to be inked. In the movement of the bed toward the platen the die 4 again passes under the inking roller 11 and then under the wiping pad 13 which will wipe off the excess ink. A further movement of the bed toward the platen causes the roller 7 to reach the descending portion of the rail or cam 9 so that the die holder 3 will move about its pivot and between the bed 1 and the platen 10 into a position for making an impression.
, Obviously many changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In an engraving and embossing press,
and for pivotal movement with respect thereto, means for moving the die holder 5 about its pivot into an impression position and for movingthe die holder from the impression position and into an inking and wiping position, inking and wiping mechanisms for the die arranged along the path of movement of the die with the support, and means for moving the said support to cause the die 'to be operated upon by the said inking and wiping mechanisms.
3. Incombination with a press embodying a reciprocable bed, a die holder pivotally supported by the bed and for reciprocation therewith, and means for swinging the die holder about its pivot from an impression position into an inking and wiping position,
a reciprocable bed, a die holder connected.
with said bed for reciprocation therewith and for pivotal movement with respect thereto, means for moving the bed toward and away from the platen, means operating during a portion of the cycle of movement of the bed to move the die holder from an impression position into andv maintaining the die in a substantially horizontal position during another portion of the cycle of operation, and inking and wiping mechanism positioned to operate'upon the die during its movement in said substantially horizontal position. 7 1
5. In combination with a press embodying a reciprocable bed, a die holder connected with said bed for reciprocationtherewith and for pivotal movement with respect thereto, means for moving the bed toward and away from the platen, means operating during a portion of the cycle of movement of the bed to move the die'holder from an impression position into. and maintaining the die in asubstantially horizontal position during another portion of the cycle of operation, and inking and wiping mechanism positioned to operate upon the die during its movement in said substantially horizontal position, the second recited meansembodying a cam element and an element co 6perat-, ing therewith, one of said elements being connected with a fixed support and the other element being connected with the said die holder, said elements being movable rela tively one with relation to the other.
6. In combination with a press embodying a reciprocable bed, a dievholder connected thereto for movement therewith and for pivotal movement with respect thereto,
means for swinging the die holder in one direction about its pivot and againstthecbed plate into an impression position during the movement of the bed in one direction, the said means operating when the bed is moved in the opposite direction toswing the die out of impression position and into an inking and wiping position and for maintaining the die in such position duringa portion of the movement, of the said bed in both direc tions, means for inking and means for wiping the die.
7 In combination with a press embodying a reciprocable bed, a die holder connected thereto for movement therewith and for pivotal movement with respect thereto, means for swinging the die holderin one direction about its pivot and against the bed plate into an impression position during the movement of the bed in one direction, the said means operating when the bed is moved in the opposite direction to swing the die out of impression position and into an inking and wiping position and for maintaining the die in such position during a portion of the movement of the said bed in'both direc- 10 tions, means for inking and means for wiping the die, the said die swinging means embodying a stationary guide or track and an arm connected with the die holder and movable on the guide or track.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification on this 1st day of March, A. D. 1920.
