BENCH-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Bono, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county oi' Henrico and State of 'firginia, have invente-fl certain new and useful improvements in Bench- Llanips, of which the iollowing is a specilication, reiference being had to the accompanying. drawings.
lhis invention relates to an improved bench clamp and an object is to provide a clamp of this character or adjustment relatively to the bench so as to hal/l the work regardless of its width or thickness between the clamping member and the side of the bench. i
Another object is to provide a bench clamp, adjustable relatively to the bench and including a pair oi2 jaws, one constituting a holding jaw for an operating screw and the other janT constituting a clamp proper for adjustment relatively to the screw holding jaw so as to clamp the work between the last mentioned jaw and the side of the bench.
Still another object resides in a bench clamp wherein novel means is afforded for permitting the bench clamp to be quickly adjusted relatively to the side of the bench so that all classes of work can be clamped between the clamp and the side of the bench, and there being an auxiliary clamping jaw adjustable relatively to the screw holding jaw, in order to insure making close adjustd ments; For instance, the clamp may be ad justed very quickly by pulling the clamp carrying frame out from the side of the bench and positioned substantially relatively to the work, whereby the auxiliary clamping jaw may be adjusted slightly to engage the work and clamp the same se# curely.
A further object resides in the provision of a bench clamp wherein a frame including racks engageable with bars of the bench for holding the clamp in guides for guiding the frame, thereby enabling the bench clamp to be quickly adjusted by pulling the frame outwardly from the side of the bench and engaging the teeth of the racks with the bars of the bench.
A still further object is to provide a bench clamp which is quickly adjustable to accommodate large and small work when clamped between the auxiliary clamping jaw and the side of the bench, with means for adjusting the auxiliary clamping jaw.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical `form for commercial purposes, the invention 'may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed provided they are comprehended within the scopeoi' what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and 4combination oi' parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the'drawings and claimed. y

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a work bench, which comprises the opposite sides 2, the top 3 of the bench, and 4 denotes a'guide bar connecting the sides of thebench; One of the sides 2 of the bench is provided with openings 5 and, 6 and extending across the lower inner part of the opening" 5 is-a holding bar 7 vwhich is secured by screws 9 or the like to the side ot the bench. The lower outer portion of the opening 6 has a similar holding bar 8 which is secured by screws 10. These bars 7 and 8 protrude upwardly above the bottoms of the openings 5 and 6 to be engaged by racks.
A frame 11 is provided, and which'comprises a clamping jaw 12, the rack bars 13 which are disposed'horizontally in parallelism and the brace bars 14, which extend vertically and are in parallelism. The bars 14 connect the inner endsof the rack bars 13 in order to relatively brace them. The teeth 15 of the upper rack bar 13 have rounded corners 16 so that when the frame 11 is slightly tilted, the teeth may slide over the bar 7 when the frame is moved inwardly. The teeth 17 of the lower edge of the lower bar 13 have rounded corners 18, which permit the lower rack bar 13 to slide over the bar 8 when the frame 11 is tilted in the opposite direction to permit the frame to slide inwardly. The rounded corners 16 and 18 are reversely disposed so as to permit the frame 11 to move inwardly and outwardly from the work bench, it depending entirely upon the direction of tilt of the frame The vertical bars 14 are secured to the inner ends of the bars 13 as at 19 and 2O by means of a pair of pins. The pins 19 and 2O hold the bars 14 rigidly at right angles to the bars 13 so as to provide a substantial vframe. Passing transversely through the u-pper endsy oitl the bars 14 is a journal pin 22 carrying the roller 23 which engages upon the upper :tace of the guide bar 4, so asto guide the trame inwardly and outwardly from the bench.
The operating screw holding an abutment jaw 12 is secured to the outer ends of the-bars 13 as by means of pins 24 arranged in pairs, and fixed in the upper end of the holding or abutment jaw 12 is a threaded bushing or sleeve 25 through which a screw 26 engages. One end of the screw' terminates in head 27 transverselyv of w-hich a hand rod 23y movably extends.
The opposite ends ot the hand rod 23v arev provided with nuts or heads 29 detachably threaded thereto so as to limit the hand rod in either one of its reciprocating movements through the head 27'. Pivoted by a pin 30 to the lower bar 13 is the lower end oi a clam-ping jaw 31 which has an opening 32v :the lower end ot the jaw 31v there'being retaining lugs 35 on the adjacent faces of the lower ends ot the jaws 12 and 31 in order to retain theexpansion spring 34 in position.
-The inner end et the screw 26 engages a socket 26"L in a plate 23h which is secured in any suitable manner in one tace or' the clampingjaw 31. When it is desired to hold al piece: ot work such as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 between the clamping jaw 31 and the side ol thebench regardless of the width or thicknessot the werk, the frame which includes the bars 13 may be quickly adjusted outwardly from the bench a re quisite distance toreceive the work. It is to be' noted that.y the teeth in the rack bars 13are relatively large and are disposed relatively toheach other so as to engage the plates 7 and 8and owing to thesize of the teethl the trame cannot. be adjusted so that thefj aw 31canproperly engageI the work to hold it ink position, therefore, after placing the work. between the: jaw 31 andthe bench it is inacessaryA to adjust the jawV 31'.
The adjustment of the jaw 31 is accomplished by turning the operating screw 26 and owing to the inner end of the screw engaging the socket the jaw 31 may be moved toward the work and clamp it securely between the bench and the jaw. The jaw 13 will act as an abutment together with the straight edge of the teeth 15 thereby preventing outward movenient of theV abutment jaw 12 relatively to the bench when the work is clamped between the jaw 31 and the bench. lt is to be noted that the j awV 31 is adjustable relatively to the abutment jaw 12 and is capable of ne adjustments. A bench clamp ot this character can be used for clampingy wide articles such as drawers and the like between the jaw 31 and the side ot the bench indicated in .dotted lines in Fig. 2;
llVhen it is desired to disengage the work from the jaw 31 and the side ot the bench, the operating screw is rotated so as to move outwardlythrough the abutment jaw 12 and in this case the jaw 31 will disengage the work, owing to the action of the spring 34 which will swingV the jaw 31 on its pivot 30 and cause the upper end of the jaw 31 to disengage.
By the provision of a clamp ot this character it will be seen that thc bench clamp can be adjusted very quickly relatively to the bench and then the tine adjustments can be made byadjusting the jaw 31, and furthermore the' face of the` work can be clamped securely in position. Y
The' invention having been set torth,what is claimedA as new and useful is in a bench clamp, Aa guide bar connecting the opposite sides of the bench, one side ot the bench having openings, a clamp supporting frame comprising parallel bars enga'g ing through and having rack teeth' connections with said openings to hold the Jframe in different adjusted positions relatively to the side of the bench, a member connectingv the inner ends ot said barsand being guided upon the guide bar, an abutment jaw connecting the outer ends of said bars, a movable bench clamping Vjaw pivoted on the lower bar ot said frame and having an opening through which the upperV bar of said traine passes, a spring interposed between the lower extremity of the bench clamping jaw and the abutment jaw' below the pivot oi. the bench clamping jaw to move the upper end of the bench clam-ping jaw from the worln and a screw, including means tor rom-tingv it, and having a socket engagement to the bench clamping jaw, toV move the jaw toward andV clamp the work against the side oie the bench.
