To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED A. Goonnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.

I his invention relates to certain improvements in exhibiting devices and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with pictures and the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the same may be supported in a desired position.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including an outer panel of glass or other transparent material and a back plate of metal or other opaque material, together with means for effectively maintaining said plates in assembled relation, said means also being comprised in a medium whereby the assembled frame may be supported in desired position.

he invention consists in the details of construction and inthe combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved exhibiting device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a" view in front elevation of an exhibiting device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, P denotes the front plate of my im proved device herein disclosed in the form of a fivepointed star and the margins of the plate P are defined by the rearwardly directed flanges 1. The inner or meeting end portions of adjacent flanges 1 at their outer or free edges are provided with the webs or lugs 2 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. The plate P. with its flanges 1 and webs 2 is formed of glass or other transparent material so that visual access may be had therethrough.

B denotes a back plate of metal or other opaque material and which is also herein disclosed in the form of a five-pointed star and which is adapted to snugly engage and overlie the rear face of the plate P, with the marginal portions thereof defined by the outstanding flanges 3 having close contact with the flanges l of the plate P.

The central portion of the plate B is provided with a slight depression 4 herein disclosed as circular and which provides a compartment or chamber 5 to receive a photograph, picture, or other article to be exhibited.

6 and 7 denote two disks in superimposed overlying relation, each provided at its axial center with an opening 8. Extending through the opening 8 is the headed shank or bolt 9 with which is engaged a clamping nut 10 whereby the disks 6 and 7 are maintained in requisite assembled relation and which shank or bolt 9 also serves for an additional purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

The outer disk 7 is provided with a plurality of radially disposed grooves or chan nels 11 in each of which is slidably disposed an end portion of an elongated arm 12. The portion of the arm 12within the groove or channel 11 is provided longitudinally thereof with the slot 14 through which is disposed the clamping screw or bolt 15. The bolt 15, in the present embodiment of my invention, is loosely disposed through the outer disk 7 and in threaded engagement with the inner disk 6. By this means, the arm 12 engagement of said may be longitudinally adjusted as required and particularly to facilitate the requisite arm with a web or lug 2.

' The outer end portion of'each of the arms 12 is provided with an inwardly facing hook member 16 which is adapted to interlock wltha web or lug 2. In the present embodiment of my invention, an arm 12 coacts with each of the webs or lugs 2, so that when the same are operatively ei'igaged therewith the plates P and'B are effectively clamped in assembled relation and particularly in view of the fact thatthe outer end portions of the arms 12 are substantially in contact with the free edges of the flanges 3 with the 7 head of the shank or bolt 9 substantially in contact with the central portion of the plate 13.

g b denotes a supporting member comprlsing two arcuate or curved legs 17 arranged in convergence with their meeting ends 111- tegrally connected. The opposite or free ends of the arms 17. are provided with the feet 18 adapted for contact with a supporting surface and which feet are curved in such a manner to prevent the same from sfcratching or otherwise marring said surace.

Integrally formed with the meeting ends of the legs 17 is an angularly disposed extension or arm 19 provided with a longitudinally directed slot 20 through which isend portion adapted to be directed the free of the shank or bolt 9 hereinbefore referred to and outwardlyof the clamping nut 10. E-ngagedwith the shank or bolt 9 isa second clamping nut 21 whereby the extension or arm 19'is' held in substantially a fixed posi entirety is materially strengthened or reinforced as it 18 of utmost importance that such member S be substantially rigid.

The outer end portions of the arms 12 are provided with the threaded openings 23in which are adapted to be threaded or otherwise engaged the eye members 24 so that when desired a cord or the like may be engagedwith said eye members to suspend or hang the assembled plates P and B and under which conditions the supporting member S is not employed. In practice, only 'two eye members 24 need be employed and such members: are engagedwitli the arms 12 in accordance with the position it is desired that the points of the device assume with respect to the center thereof. It will be understood, however, that if preferred the assembled device can be suspended from one eye member 24 and preferably from the eye member 24 shown at the lower part-of the device as illustrated in Fig. 4:. I

Although not shown in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the face of the plate B 'exposed'through the plate P may have arranged thereon any kind of ornamentation which will enhance the es theti'c value ofthe device and while primarily it is my intention to place such ornamentation on the points of the plate 13, it iS to be understood that the central portion of said plate may also be ornamented as" desired and in which nstance it will not'be necessary to apply aphotograph, picture, or. other article, as it will be readily understood that if desired a mirror or any'other article'may' be arranged at the central portion of the plate P; or more particularly within the chamber 5 afforded by the depression 4.

I also do not'wish to be understood as limiting myself to placing ornamentation upon the plate B because under certain conditions it may be of advantage to arrange such ornamentationon the inner face of the transparent plate P. V 7

From the foregoing description 'it is thought to be obvious that an exhibiting device constructed inaccordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of somechange and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof 'and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limitingmyself to the precise arrangement and formation-of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim: 3

1. An exhibiting device of the character described comprising two plates, one disposed within the other, the first mentioned plate having a depression for the reception of matter to be exhibited, each plate having rearwardly directed flanges disposed in engagement with each other, and fastening 7 means engaged with one of said plates and extendingover the flanges of said plates into engagement with the remaining plate, whereby the engagement of the edges of the plates with each other is only visible from the rear portion of the device.

2. An exhibiting device of the character described comprising a transparent plate and an opaque plate, the opaque plate being disposed within the transparent plate and having a depression for the reception of matter to be exhibited, means for securing and supporting said plates comprising a plate having a plurality of radiating channels, arms adjustably mounted in said chan nels and engaged With the edges of the plates.

3. An exhibiting device of the character described comprising a transparent and an opaque plate, the opaque plate being disposed within the transparent plate and having a depression for the reception of matter to be exhibited, and means for securing and supporting said plates comprising a plate having a plurality of radiating channels, arms having one of their end portions disposed Within the channels, the opposite ends of the arms extending over the edges of the plates into engagement With the side portions of the transparent plate.

4. An exhibiting device of the character described comprising a transparent and an opaque plate, the opaque plate being disposed within the transparent plate and having a depression for the reception of matter to be exhibited, means for securing and supporting said plates comprising a plate having a plurality of radiating channels, arms having one of their end portions disposed within the channels, the.opposite ends of the arms extending over the edges of the plates into engagement with the side portions of the transparent plate, a bolt extending through the central portion of the plate supporting the arms, a stand slidably mounted on said bolt, and means carried by the bolt to normally prevent movement of the stand, said bolt being also arranged to limit movement of the arms toward each other.
