PATENT OFFICE.
OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR 01" DNE-HAIJ '10 THOMAS DUCHARME, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
IGNITION DEVICE FOR GASPSTOVES.
Specification of Letters Zatent.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that JOSEPH VARIN, a sub- I ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Ignition Devices for Gastoves and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertams to make and use the same. The present invention has relation to improvements in igniting devices for gas,
stoves and the like, and the principal object of'the invention is to provide for the attachment of the same to the circuit of'the ordinary lightin system.
A further ob ect of the invention is to provide for the automatic control of the contacting spark producing elements, when the device is not in use;
With the above and otherobjects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown 11 sim 1e and preferred form of the invention, it eing, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efiiciency of the same.
In the drawings forming a part of the specification Figure 1 is an elevational view of the device, illustrating the circuit Connection between the switch and battery with which it is associated, the former being partly in section; v
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the device with the operative elements in inoperative position; 1
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same with the parts in operative or contacting posi tion; and, i
Fig. 4 isa diagrammatic view of the electrical circuits.
I rounds shank18 and is disposed between the In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the handle or,casing preferably of sectional construction and bein formed with airelatively w1de bore 11 1n which ismounted the tubular block 12. A'metallic igniting fork 13 is likewise slidably mounted in the handle bore 11, forwardly of block 12- and is formed with a restricted shank 14, the inner end of whlch projects within the tubular block 12. Surrounding shank 14 and connected to the outer end of block 12 and the enlarged portion 15 of fork 13 is a compression spring 16; the function of which is to normally-hold said fork within the casing or handle 10.
Projecting within opposite end of handle insulating material and in the shank 18 of which is mounted the metallic rod 19. The inner end of shank 18 of the knob 17 and the metallic rod 19 normally project within the tubular block 12 and a coil spring 20 surknob 17 and the end of block 12.
The igniting device is adapted for con nection to an ordinary lighting circuit which has been illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4, and in which the numeral 22 designates the switch box, to which are attached an ordinary snap switch 23 and plug 24.
A coil 25 has wire connection 26 with plug 24, which latter is connected by lead wire 27 to the battery 28.
Thesnap switch 23 is connected by lead Patented Dec. 7, 1920. 1
wire 29 to coil 25 and by wire 30 to the metallic rod 18 of the knob 17.
When the snap switch 23 is actuatedto close the circuit between the battery to the knob 17, the latter is pushed inwardly against the tension of spring 20 and the metallic rod 19 will engage the inner end of the shank 14 of the igniting fork 13. When it is desired to use the ignition device the operator pushes the knob 17 within the handle until the inner end of the rod 19 strikes against the shank 14 thereby permitting the current to flow to the prongs 31 of the fork 13. When further pressure has been applied to the knob 17the fork will be forced from the handle m that the prongs 31 may be placed in contact with the metallic burner of the stove or range whereby the electrical circuit will be completed and a s ark roduced by which the gas is ignited. on
the knob 17 is-forced inward the lug 32 carried thereby will be engaged by a leaf spring 33 secured within the bore 11 of the handle operator hold the fork against the stove burner or any other grounding element.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and des re to se-' cure by Letters Patent is:
1. A gas ignition device comprising a, handle, a contact member normally disposed within said handle, a knob, switch terminals carried one by said knob and one by said contact member, and means whereby when said knob is moved said switch terminals will be brought into engagement and the contact member projected from the handle u on further movement of said knob.
2. n ignition device comprising a tubular handle, a contact member-normally retained within said handle, a spring actuated knob, means whereby when'said knob is forced within said handle said contact member will be forced from said handle and means for retaining said knob within said, handle.
3; An ignition device of the character described comprising a tubular handle, a tubular plug arranged within said handle, a contact member normally retained within said handle at one side of said plug, a knob arranged within said handle at the opposite side of, the plug and means whereby when pressure is applied to said knob it will engage said 'contact member and force the same from said handle 4. A gas ignition device comprising a handle, a contact member disposed in said handle, aknob adapted for engagement with said contact member whereby the latter may be onergiaed, a plug arranged in said handle, a spring connected to said contact member and lug for holding the contact member within said handle, and a spring connecting said knob and plug for normally holding said knob outiof engagementwith said contact member.
5. A gas ignition device comprising a tubular handle, a tubular plug arranged within said-handle, a forked contact member, a shank carried by said contact member, a coil spring encircling said shank and connecting said contact member with said plug whereby the contact member, will be normally retained within said handle, a knob, a rod carried by said knob and extending in alinement with the shank of said contact member, a coil spring arranged between said knob and said plug, said knob ada ted to be forced within said handle where y said rod will first contact with said shank and upon further movement of the knob said contact member projected from said handle substantially as and for the purpose specified.
'In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
