To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WALLING VAN DOLSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadel hia, in the county of Philadelphia and Slate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved operating table for the purpose of facilitating the handling of patients during various surgical operations and an object is to provide a device ofthis kind by the use of which the lifting of a patient from a carriage to the table by hand is eliminated for it has been found that there is a great strainon the nurses as well as the danger to the patient when the patient is handled manually.
Another object embodies the provision of a surgical apparatus of this kind wherein the table top is capable of various adjustments, in fact capable of being tilted in various positions with considerable ease in order to enable the patient to be handled with care when being transferred from the carriage to the table and vice versa.
Still another object is to provide a surgical apparatus of this kind including runners and roller bearings "in order to support the weight of the table, thus eliminating sliding parts and also the invention aims to provide means for holding the top from moving after it has been once positioned.
A further object consists in the provision of an improved table top having adjustable extensions to additionally facilitate the handling of the patient and also to provide an apparatus of this kind which is simple, efficient and practical and can be cheaply constructed whereby it may be sold at a reasonable profit. I
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a suitable frame which may be constructed of any suitable material such as metal, and which may be any conventional shape or conpreferably as shown. Mounted in bearings 2 of the frame is a shaft 3, on which the gears 4 are mounted to move with the shaft. Mounted in bearings 5 of the opposite side of the frame is an operating shaft 6, which is provided with a worm gear 7 which meshes or engages with the worm 8 which in turn is carried by the shaft 9. This shaft 9 is mounted in suitable bearings 10 of the frame 1 and carried by one end of the shaft is a worm 11, which meshes or engages with the worm gear 12 which is also .mounted upon the shaft 3 to move therewith.
The frame 1 is preferably rectangular and pivotally mounted on the upper part of the frame by means of the shaft 13 is a tiltable table top 14, which is provided with a marginal flange for the purpose of fitting over the upper portion of the frame 1 as may be clearly understood from Fig; 1. Carried by and depending from the tabletop 14 is a pair of racks 15, the teeth of which mesh with the gears 4. These racks 15 are arcuate in contour and whose radii extend from the pivot shaft 13 so that when manual power is applied to the hand wheel 16 (which is carried by the shaft 6) the shaft 9 will be rotated through the medium of the worm gear 7 and worm 8, thereby imparting movement to the arcuate racks 15 through the medium of the worm 11, worm gear 12-and the gears 4, whereby the table frame of the table 14 may be tilted in various inclined positions.
The table top 14 is provided with a pair of guides or tracks 17 with which the runners 18 engage. An interchangeable or second table top proper 19 is arranged to carry the runners 18 so that the table top 19 is capable of movement in a plane parallel with the table top 14 regardless of the position of the top let. Suitable roller bearings 20 are provided in the runners 18 in order to eliminate sliding parts. The guides or tracks 17 have pin catches 21 to engage the openings 22 of the extensions 22 of the runners 18 in order to hold the table top proper in the position which it may assume when adjusted.
The table top proper comprises an intermediate section 23 and two end sections 2-1 which are pivotally connected as at 25 to the intermediate section so as to be adjusted in various inclined positions relatively to the intermediate section, and arranged in a downward depending position. The end portions of the intermediate section are pro vided with depending arms 26 whereas the tiltable sections 241 have depending lugs 27 provided with guide rods 28. Sleeves 29 are mounted upon the guide rods 28 and are designed to be held in different adjusted positions by means of the thumb screws 30. Brace rods 31 are connected to the adjustable sleeve 29 in any suitable manner and are in turn pivotally connected at 32 to the depending arms 26. It is obvious that by loosening the thumb screw 30 the sleeves 29 are capable of longitudinal adjustment on the guide rods 28 while the brace and connecting rods 81 are capable of pivotal movements relatively to the depending arms 26 particularly when the end sections 24 of the table top proper are lowered to downward depending positions and disposed upon i11- clined planes from the intermediate section.
From the foregoing it is to be noted that a very simple, efficient, and practical interchangeable surgical operating table top has been devised, one which can be quickly, easily and conveniently shifted on its roller bearings, and track from the top of the carriage frame to the top of the table frame. This greatly facilitates the handling of the patients from the carriage to the operating table without lifting or otherwise manually handling the patient. Furthermore the present form of operating table will eliminate the calling into the operating room orderlies wearing soiled clothing with the added danger of injuring the patient. Also the danger to the patient from unnecessary and rough handling and furthermore the present operating table will save time and labor which has'been found a vital element inthis line of Work performed by surgeons.
Furthermore the carriage and the table top areto be used together as a complete unit table to the carriage, because both frames are'correspondingly fitted with tracks which are brought registration with each other when the transfer is made. In other words, the top may slide from the table to the carriage and to permit of this the carriage a which is shown as being adjacent the operating table is provided with suitable tracks a which, when the carriage is positioned as shown, are in registration with the tracks 17 of the operating table so as to permit the top to slide from one to the other.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a surgical operating table, a frame, a table top mounted pivotally thereon for adjustments in different inclined planes, means operatively connecting with the top for adjusting the same, a second table top adjustable in a plane relatively parallel with the first top and at right angles to the inclined planes of the first top, thereby eliminating the lifting of the patient from a carriage to the table and vice versa.
2. In a surgical operating table, a frame, atable top mounted pivotally thereon for adjustments in different inclined planes, means operatively connecting with the top for adjusting the same, a second table top adjustable in a plane relatively parallel with the first top and at right angles to the inclined plane of the first top, thereby eliminating the lifting of the patient from a carriage to the table and vice versa, said second table top comprising an intermediate section which is supported upon the first top and a pair of end sections connected to the ends of the intermediate section for relative pivotal movement, and means for holding the end sections in different adjusted positions.
3. In a surgical operating table, a sup porting frame, a table top operatively mounted thereon and comprising dominant and oscillatory tops, the latter being adjustable in a plane parallel with the former, and the former being tiltable in various inclined planes at right angles to the adjustment of the latter, means operatively connected with the oscillatory top for adjusting the same, the oscillatory top comprising an intermediate section anda pair of end sections pivotally connected to'the intermediate section, and means for holding the end-sections in different adjusted positions relative to pivotally thereon for adjustments in differ-' ent inclined planes, a second table top adjustable in a plane relatively parallel with the first top and at right angles to the inclined planes'of the first top thereby eliminating the lifting of the patient from a I carriage to the table and vice versa. because the top is transferable from the ing arcuate racks whose radiiextend from the pivot of the top, gears meshing with the racks and adapted to be rotated for imparting movement to the racks, means opposite said gears and the racks adjacent one end of the frame and there being worm gear connections with said gears for operating them, a second table top adjustable in a plane relatively parallel with the first top and at right angles to any one of the inolined planes, thereby eliminating the lifting of the patient from a carriage to the table and vice versa.
6. In a surgical operating table, a diminant supporting table top, a frame on which said top is pivotally mounted, said dominant top being adjustable to difierent inclined planes, means operatively connecting with the top for adjusting the same, tracks on said top extending at right angles thereto, a second table top operatively engaging said tracks whereby the second table top may be adjusted in a plane relatively parallel with the first top and at right angles to the inclined planes of the first top thereby eliminating the lifting of the patient from a carriage to the table and vice versa.
7. In a surgical operating table, a dominant supporting table top, a frame on which said top is pivotally mounted, said dominant top being adjustable to different inclined planes, means operatively connecting with the top for ad'usting the same tracks on said topexten ing at right ang es thereto, a second table top operatively engaging said tracks whereby the second table top may be adjusted in a plane relatively parallel with the first top and at right angles to the inclined planes of the first top thereby eliminating the lifting of the patient from a carriage to the table and vice versa, the second table top sections being pivotally mounted on the ends of the second table top, and means for holding the end sections in different adjusted positions.
