COOKING-UTENSIL LID.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY VILLIAM PFISTERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Utensil Lids, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a cooking utensil lid which will fit cooking utensils of various diameters and which will include a number of sections which can be inter-locked and if desired certain of these sections can be removed when the lid is to be used on cooking utensils of smaller diameters or which can be added to if a larger size lid is desired.
A further object is to so make my improved lid that it can be easily manipulated and so that it will firmly set upon a cooking utensil.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved lid,
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional elevation showing a slight modification in the form of my improved lid.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 2 inclusive, my improved lid includes a central circular section 4 which is in the form of a plate made of pressed sheet metal having a downwardly extending annular flange 5 which is screw threaded preferably by pressing the flange; the screw threading extending helically around the vertical axis of said section l. The flange 5 at its bottom terminates in an annular lip 6 which forms a ledge for a purpose hereinafter described.
A ring section 7 has a downwardly extending inner flange 8 which is internally screw threaded and adapted to be screwed upon the flange 5 so that the bottom of the flange 8 rests on the top of the lip or ledge 6. The ring section 7 has an outer flange 9 which is also screw threaded and this flange 9 at its bottom has an outwardly projecting Specification of Letters Patent.

A second ring section 11 of larger diameter than the ring section 7 has an inwardly extending flange 12 which depends therefrom in the same manner as the flange 8 depends from the ring section 7. This flange 12 is internally screw threaded and is adapted to be screwed on the outer flange 9 of the ring section 7; the lower end of the flange 12 resting on the upper surface of the lip or ledge 10. The ring section 11 has an outer flange 13 which corresponds to the outer flange 9 of the ring section 7 and this flange 13 is screw threaded to receive a screw threaded flange 14 of another ring section 15. The ring sections 7 11 and 15 are similarly constructed with eX- ception that they 'are of correspondingly larger diameters and in this manner any number of ring sections can be secured in place and a lid will be formed of any desired diameter.
The spaces 16 between the flanges of each section serve as annular chambers into which the upper edge 17 of a pot or cooking utensil 18 can project. In other words, the spaces 16 provide a series of grooves into which the upper edges of cooking utensils of various diameters can project and if desired, the lid can be used with any number of the sections secured together. If desired any of the outer ring sections can be removed by unscrewing them from the inner section to which they are attached and to facilitate this operation I preferably provide each of the ring sections with a lip or projection 19 which can be made by stamping a portion of the metal upwardly to provide a nger-hold.
The central section 1 can be provided with a handle 2O which may be made of twisted wire as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a construction which is substantially identical to that described above with exception that instead of having the short annular lips I provide comparatively large annular lips 61L and groove the latter as shown at 17 a to permit the upper edge ofthe cooking utensil 18 to extend therein so that the lid will firmly rest upon the utensil irrespective `of its size. How ever, I preferably use the short lips as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for the reason that any slight variation in the diameter of the cook ing utensil can be compensated for since the annular grooves or chambers 16 are of sufficient width to permit slight variation in the diameter of the utensil without preventing the latter from properly entering the spaces 16.
In the drawings I have only illustrated three of the ring sections, however, it will be noted that a greater or less number can be used if desired.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myselfr1 to the precise construction set forth. but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A lid of the character described including a central section; ring sections having de` pending inner and outer screw threaded flanges, the inner liange of each of said ring sections being' adapted to be screwed on the outer flange of another section, the inner flange of the innermost ring section being adapted to be screwed on said central section; and means providing ledge abutments for said ring sections to limit their screw threading action; substantially as described.
