DEMOUNTAIBLE WHEEL.
Application filed December 3, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PAGE LIVELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, and RAYMOND J. STEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful .Demountable Wheel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide novel means whereby, by adding a few parts to the wheel equipment of a Ford car, such a wheel may be made demountable and inter changeable at the will of an operator.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be'made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings 2- Figure 1 shows in section, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the back disk; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the back disk; Fig. 1 is a sectional detail showing a part of the wheel; Fig. 5 is front elevation of the structure delineated in Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 marks a hub having a flange 2, the hub 1 carrying a hub cap 3. An outer hub plate 4 is shown, the flange 2 and the outer hub plate 4 constituting means for holding the spokes 5 in-place, in the regular equipment of a Ford car.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided a back disk 6 which abuts against the rear face of the flange 2 on the hub 1, the back disk having polygonal openings 7. The numeral 8 marks studs or bolts, constituting securing devices, the studs having polygonal. heads 9 held against rotation in the openings 7 of the back disk 6, the studs projecting removably through the flange 2. Collars 10 are threaded on the studs 8, the collars engaging the forward face of the flange 2. In this way, the studs Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920. Serial No. 265,150.
8 are held on the flange '2, in outstanding relation with respect thereto.
The numeral 11 marks an inner hub plate having a sleeve 12 against which the inner ends of the spokes 5 abut. Screws 14 or like securing devices connect the outer plate 4: and the inner hub plate 11, and thus, a demountable wheel is provided.
The demountable wheel above defined may he slipped upon the hub 1, the hub 1 being received within the sleeve 12 of the inner hub plate 4, the studs passing through openings 16 in the spokes 5 and in the outer hub plate 4, the collars 10 being received in openings 17 fashioned in the inner hub plate 11. Cap nuts 15 are threaded on the outer ends of the studs 8 and engage the outer hub plate 1, the inner hub plate 11 abutting against the flange 2, and the demountable wheel in this way being held on the hub 1.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that a simple means is provided, whereby, through the addition of a few elements to a common Ford wheel equipment, a demountable wheel may be provided.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a hub having a flange; a back disk cooperating with the rear face of the flange and having polygonal openings; an inner plate co operating with the outer face of the flange, the inner plate having openings, and being provided with a sleeve receiving the hub an outer plate receiving the hub; spokes between the plates and abutting against the sleeve; studs passing through the flange, through the openings of the inner plate and through the outer plate, the studs having heads received against rotation in the openings of the back disk; collars threaded on the studs and received in the openings of the inner plate, the studs cooperating with the flange and being held against rotation by the spokes; and securing devices on the studs, the securing devices, engaging the outer plate.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
