VALVE FOR OIL-BURNERS.
Application filed August 10, 1918, Serial No. 249,217. Renewed October 19, 1920.
To all whom it may concern e it known that I, Jnssn D. HORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Oil-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lue flame oil stoves have been constructed hitherto wherein means are employed whereby the oil is converted into gas by heat before reaching the burner. In order to light these stoves a small preliminary quantity-of oil is supplied and is caught in a suitable receptacle close to that portion of the burner in which the oil is subsequently converted into gas during operation of the stove. Upon lighting this preliminary dose of oil with a match, a flame is produced which acts to heat up the apparatus until the oil coming to the burner is converted into gas and is ignited, afterwhich the burner maintains its own gas-producing temperature, and continuous operation of the burner is insured. In stoves having burners of this kind it has been customary to control the supply of oil by means of a needle valve, which is first opened wide, to permit passage of the preliminary volume of oil for lighting; and, after the blue flame is produced, is almost closed, so as to restrict the oil supply to the very small volume necessary to maintain the blue flame.
The manipulation of the needle valve for the double to say for preliminary lighting and subsequent throttling down of the supply, in volves a degree of expert judgment too often found absent in the class of persons to whom it is necessary to confide the management of these oil burners. Consequently, stoves supplied with such burners are often found wasteful and offensive, and are he quently subject to'serious accidents, owing to the careless or ignorant use of the valve. It is the object of my present invention to supply a form of burner which shall make available all the advantages of the needle valve for accurate adjustment and readjustment of the supply, while rendering it unnecessary to manipulate such valve in the preliminary lighting operation. The oil reaches this pipe from any appropriatereservoir (not shown) by means of a pipe 12, and a cylindrical antechamber 13 between the pipes 11 and 12. The antechamber 13 is preferably of glass, so that the supply of oil therein may be'observed.
Between this antechamber and the burner provide means of any desired character whereby communication between the two may be entirely out ofl; and for this purpose I preferably employ a stop cook 14.
The supply of oil from the pipe 12 to the chamber 13 is controlled by the needle valve 15.
In operation the needle valve is set once for all by a properly skilled person, so as to supply the oil drop by drop for normal use. It is not'operated by the person using the stove. If there is any momentary clogging or other need for readjustment, a skilled person may be called upon to use the needle valve for this purpose. When the burner is not in use the stop cock 1% is closed and the chamber 13 gradually fills up. lVhen it is full, the proper quantity of oil for lighting as above described is stored in this antechamber. When the burner is to be lighted it is only ne'cessary to open the cook 14, when the proper once released and can be ignited at once in the proper re ceptacle. By the time this volume is ex hausted the burner is sufliciently heated to produce the blue flame, and any subsequent oil supply is suitably limited by the needle valve.
It will thus be seen that, in using my valve and urner it is only necessary to open a simple stock cock to its full extent when lighting the stove, and to close the same when extinguishing the flame. The amount of lighting oil is not left to the judgment of the user, and the normal supply during use is also regulated once for all, and in dependently of the preliminary supply.
Various changes may be made in my device without departing from the scope of my invention, and I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described.
