Be it lrnown that we, HENRY G VBUCH- -WALD and JosnrH H. CoNNnLLY, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore city and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Slug-Casting Machines, of which the following is a speciification.
This invention has reference to means for adjusting the slug space of line casting mold in connection with machines of the Mergenthaler type, and consists primarily in means whereby such space may be justed both as to length and thickness with- Y out disturbance of any of the standing parts of the machine. The improvement is illustrated as being applied to a machine employing the particular slug trimminn adjusting means ofthe Kennedy Patent No. 1,002,281, though with slight modification it may be applied to machines employing other types of trimmer adjusting mechanism. Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the fined blade and 2 the adjustable blade of a slug trimmer, the latter being secured by bolts 3 to the slide which is composed of wiarts 4 and 5 secured together by bolts 6.
i Q i slide is normally pressed in one direction by the usual spring 7 maintaining the stud 8 in vcontact with one of the usual screws 9, said screws projecting diiferent distances beyond the face of sector plate 10, so that as the plate 10 is turned one after the other of the screws 9 will be brought into engagement with the stud 8, thereby modifying the separation of the cutter blades 1 and'2. A handlerll with usual indicator 12 is provided for turning said sector plate 10. The mold carrier wheel 14 is of typical form and has the usual geared periphery l5 and iiXed mold part 16; Within the usual cut-out portion 17 is arranged the adjustable mold cap 18 which in the present improvements carries the guide pins 19 and 20. The cap 18 is held in adjusted position by spring pressed pins 21'provided each with a transverse opening 22 receiving a coil spring 23 and spring `pressed plate 24, the latter for pressing said pin in a direction to cause its teeth or threads 25 to engage, in a manner similar to that of a ratchet pawl, the threads of a screw 26 which passes through the said opening 22. The screws 26 pass through the mold carrier wheel 14 and into the mold cap and are prevented from longitudinal displacement by pins 27 entering grooves 28 in said screws. This construction constitutes a preferred type of ratchet locking means or device. By rotating the screws 26 slightly the adjustment may be corrected to coincide with type measure, it being understood that the threads of screw 26 and the teeth 25 are spaced according to type measure and through wear or carelessness may require correction. One end of the slug space of the mold is closed by the usual extension, 29 of the fixed mold part 16 while the opposite end is closed by one or more of a series of flexible liners 30, 31, 32, 33, said liners each comprising an integral piece of metal or being composed of a plurality of jointed sections as illustrated in Fig, 8, in either case the advance end thereof being provided with a pair of extensions 34 and an intermediate notch 35 to facilitate entrance into the slug space in a manner to be described. The jointed ections 36 of Fig. 8 are illustrated as being connected in series by flexible strips 37 dovetailed together, but obviously these sections may be hinged together. The ixed mold part 16 is preferably provided with a notch 98 and outwardly rising incline 99 for a purpose to be set forth in connection with the complete operation oi' the invention.
Referring to Fig. 3, the same is a diagram showing how certain ieelers go out of action as certain liners are prevented from ontering the mold. As liner 33 is excluded, feeler 79 goes out of operation; and so on, feeler with liner 78;' reeler77 with liner 31; and feeler 76 with liner 30. It will be 0bserved that feeler 77 and liner 31 are of less gage than the other i'eelers and liners, which latter are to the same gage, and this is to permit any desired adjustment of the slug space according to type gage, the mechanism constituting a. preferred type of means having a step adjustment bearing the proper relation to the ratchet looking device. For instance liner 31 and feeler 77 are say two points, and the other liners and-feelers four points, and it will be observed that the arrangement is such that the liners and Yeelers or" the same gage go out of action up to a certain point, and then it will be found that a four point liner is engaged by a two point feeler and a part of a four point 'eeler, but when it is remembered that the difference is made up by the other part oi said 'our point feeler being engaged by the remaining two point liner there is no discrepancy as it is not essentially the number of teelers which act with the liners, or even vthe number ot liners which act with the feelers, but rather the combined gage or thickness ot' the combined liners acting with ieelers of corresponding combined gage or thickness. So long as the liners run in the same order from the molding tace of the fixed mold part that the feelers assume from the molding face of the adjustable mold part, the combined gage or thickness of the feelers acting will be coincident with the combined gage of the liners permitted to enter the slug space. In this connection, the same is true oi different arrangements ot liners and teelers. As shown in the diagram in Fig. i the eelers mayall be of two point gage as 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106 and the liners of the same gage as in Fig. 3, or the arrangement may be reversed with the liners or one point gage.
The operation is as follows. ssuming that the spaces between the mold parts and the slug trimming blades are of the proper relative sizes and that a slug has just been trimmed, and that it becomes necessary to either change the gage of the next slug as to thickness or to change its length. rfhe usual custom is to open parts of the machine in order to make the required change, but with the present invention, no such practice is necessary. The operator first grasps the lever 57 moving it so that its locking pin 59 is moved from locking opening 61 into opening 60, and with such movement oiE said lever, the carriage 51 and its associated parts are caused to move along the ways 47 until arrested by the stop extension 55 coming into contact with the stud 02 of the knife slide 4. When soarrested, it will be understood that the carriage 51 and its associated parts are thereby placed in a fixed relation to the said trimmer slide l and its associated parts. 1n this position, the rib 91 will be juxtaposed to the groove 92 in the mold cap 18 and the ieelers 7 6, 77, 78, 79, one or all, will be juxtaposed to the slug space of the mold parts. The operator next throws the lever 88 to cause the crank shaft 85 to move the screw housing 52 with reference to the carriage 51 as illustrated in I1" 5, and the parts are locked in the position shown in Fig. 5 due to the locking device 90 being caused to assume the position clearly shown in Fig. 5. Thus the rib 91 is moved into the mold cap groove 92, and the eelers 75, 77, 7 8, 7 9, either moved into the space between the mold parts or into contact with'the adjacent face of the i'ixed mold part and depressed thereby, it being observed that the position `'for the 'teeler arm is at the entrance end of the slug space with the eeler lingers ready to enter the liner notches 35 prior to such actua"on oi': the crank 88. The operator then actuates the handle 11 of the slug trimmer mechanism to bring the desired screw 9 into engagement with the stud 8 oi? the slide 1 5, thereby causing movement otl the latter and also of the adjustable trimmer blade 2 so that the latter will assume the desired position relative to the iixed trimmer blade 1. Owing to the fixed relation established aforementioned between the carriage 51 and its associated parts and the trimmer slide et and its associated parts, the said carriage and its associated parts are correspondingly moved with the trimmer parts. 1With such movement, since the rib 91 is entered into the mold cap groove 92 and thereby depressing the .mold cap locking pins 21 to unlock the mold cap 18, said rib carries with it the mold cap placing the cap in the proper distance from the fixed mold part 1G to suit the position that the adjustable trimmer blade 2 has or assumes relatively to the iii-:ed trimmer blade 1. Thus, the space between the trimmer blades and the slug space between the mold parts are correlative. 1n some cases, it may desirable or necessary to make independent adjustments ot' the trimmer blade and mold cap, which is permitted by operating the levers accordingly, or the trimmer may be first moved to its desired adjusted position and the lever 57 and crank shaft lever 88 then operated to V.ated to return 4thevcarriage 51 and its concause the rib 91 to find the mold cap groove 92when further movement of the Vsaid lever 57 may be employed to "move the parts until Contact of the stop extension 55 with the lug 62, the principal point in either methodof operation being that when said stop extension 55 engages said stud 62 the operator may know that the molding face of the mold cap 18 bears the proper `relation to the trimming edge of the trimmer blade 2.
' f it is desired to change only theV thickness of the slug the mold cap and adjustable trimmer blade are adjusted inthe manner just stated, then the crank shaft lever 88 and carriage moving vlever 57 kmay be opernccted'parts to retractedposition, in which position, thek locking pin 59 of said lever 57 will enter the opening61.v YWith theV parts soretracted, the trimming operation may be performed without interference of the parts of this improvement. Should it not, however, be desired to return the parts to retracted position, but to insert or withdraw liners from the mold .slug space, the parts are retained inthe position described above which is the Fig. position. The operator then rotates the hand wheel 66 causing rotation of the feed screw whereby the nut 69 is caused to move longitudinally of the screw housing 52. Vsuchlingers 75 of the feelers which have entered the notches 35 of certain of the liners will 'clrawwhichever liners as are enf gaged into the slug space of the mold. Obviously reverse rotation of the feed screw 65 will cause ejectment in a similar manner Vof the liners from the slug space. `With the liners all ejected from the slug space, the liner notches 35 all aline so that the alining fingers( 5 of the feelers may engage the re- VVquired number of liners to be entered into Y the mold.
As the moldv cap 18 is moved by the `rib 91'it increases` or decreases the entrance to the slug space so that all or only a part ofthe number of liners may be admitted, the shoulder L11 of thejm'old cap acting as a barrier against entrance of liners in excess of the ,desired number, and in Fig.V 1,- the undesired liner is liner33. As the mold cap moves to exclude certain liners, itsmovement correspondingly causes feelers to be put out of action, and in Fig. 1, it is illustrated as being feeler 79. VSuch fe'eler` is rendered inactive due to its being placed over or rather beyond the molding face of the iixed mold part 16 so that it is depressed into the arm70 and only the feelers which may enter the slug space being permitted to act upon the liners which may enterthe slug space. lhen the mold cap is moved to exclude both liners 33 and 32, such move'-` ment will also have placed both feelers 79 the fixed mold part 16 they will move into n said notch 98 and later ride up the inclined portion 99, Fig. Lontcthe outer face of the fixed mold part.
