UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-Ion.
TO LANG & LAUSTER, OF SAME PLACE.
l IMPROVEMENT IN MOLASS ES-PITCHER TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,076, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PHILLIP LANG, J r., of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molasses- Pitcher Top and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a partof this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ewermouth molasses-pitcher top embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the lid being removed, and of the auxiliary cover, the two parts being'detached, in order to show them more clearly. 'Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each. My invention consists in seatinga fixed cover in the upper edge of the spout part of a cast pitcher-top, such top being cast in a single piece, and these parts being so connected as to leave a discharge at the spout; and it consists, further, in making such fixed cover so that the ordinary lid shall shut down closely.thereon for the more efiicient exclusion of insects.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and manner of use.
The top is of an ordinary construction, and consists of the ring or neck a, with its ewershaped spout, and both are covered by the usual lid 1). The neck a, with its spout, is cast in a mold, while the lid is stamped out in a die. I cut out the edges of the mouth part of the neck, as shown at c, to the depth of thickness of the piece or cover d, so that when the same is inserted or welded in it will fill up the edges of the mouth part, so that when the lid b is closed it shall make a perfect joint therewith. The piece or cover at is cut out at its front end, so as to form the orifice y when Welded into the top. The piece d is stamped out in a suitably-shaped die, and when in place does not extend far enough back to interfere with filling the pitcher, and operates to regulate the flow of the molasses or other fluid therefrom. The piece d, in the operation of stamping, receives the same configuration as the corresponding lower face of the lid, so that the lid will shut down closely thereon, for the more efficient exclusion of insects.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A pitcher-top, a, with its ewer-shaped mouth, cast in one piece, in combination with a fixed cover, d, seated in its upper edge, substantially as set forth.
'2. The fixed cover d seated in the upper edge of the pitcher-top a, and having the same configuration as the lower face of the lid, and in combination therewith, substantially asset forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said GEORGE PHILLIP LANG, Jr., have hereunto set my hand.
