Be it known that I, WALKER L. lCRoUoILa citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, inthe county offMontgomery `and State of Ohio, have invented"` certain new and useful Improvements in Locksfor'Recording-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and usefulA improvements in locks the object thereofbeing to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive lock and at thesan'ie time an.. eiiicient one. The said lock is especially ins r tended for locking the inclosing doorof. service recordingmachines. Theloclghow-f ever, is of a character that renders it'serv-v iceable for general .use and isv therefore'jnot restricted in its utility. A further object ofthe invention is to provide alock which cini-` not be picked. Y y u y The accompanying drawings afford ample illustration of the improved lock and Vreference is made thereto'in-general terms to be followed by `a more m'} ,articularf.` orL A minute description. Of'the said drawings, Figure lis a bottom plan view of afrecordf ing machine cabinet or casing, shorfvin'g the improved lock applied thereto.. kFig. 2 is a sectional view on the line -2T2- of Figi l. Fig. Sis a sectionall elevation onxtheline -8-3- of Fig. 5. Fig'fl is al sectional elevation on the line- 4 4 4of Figs. '6 and/7M. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55- of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 isa section on the line n(Sw-6 of Fig. l. Fig. 7 is asection on line -7-7- of Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a view of the key removed from the lock. Fig. 9 is a view of the tumbler removed from its position in the inner cylinder and Fig. l0 is a view of the filler plate removed. j
.In a more particular description of the invention similar reference characters denote similar parts as shown in the drawings.
As' shown inkFigs.' l and 2, -1-V designates the casing of a type of recording machine adapted to record the service of anV auto truck or like power driven vehicle'. The door 2 of the cabinet or casing is hinged in the desired position' and the lock is mounted in said door. The casing has an iii-turned lip -3- at a suitable point to coperate with the lock insecuring the lid or door 2- in the closed position. This is one form of placing the lock in a serviceable position. It will be readily seen the particular Way in which the lock is mounted and` form of door.
No. 341,483;Vi
specification of Lettersraten@V Patented Nov; 1920. Appiicatiro/n ined novemiiei 29, 1919.` serial depends upon theL particular arrangement The'lock extends on the outside of the door and'in'addition to its service .as a lock serves the .furtheruse of a knob for the door. Referring to the par-y ticular construction of the'lock; 4f' designates an outer housing or cylinder which is made stationary by being attached' to the-door 2%. vAs shown in F ig.L 3,avn opening is formed in the ydoor and the surrounding' edge enters a groove in the inner end ofiy said 'outer'cylinden As shown in Fig. 2 the cylinder 4 4?- eXtends on theloutside of the door and is serviceable as a door` knob." The boreof the outer cylinder --4- at the inner end extends in `an Aoutward recess'or notch p5-f. AWithin the said outer stationary cylinder-4y a rotatable barrel or inner cylinderk ,-ffis mounted, on the inner endof *which `is fixed an eccentric lockingr plate 7+ which is turned' with said'barrel toa position behind the u'pfturned lip of the cabinet7 to preventthe door -2- being openedv7 as shown in the broken line position in Figgl. kAhalf revolution of the key. -,8 --"moves the said locking-plate f7 to this .position anda Vfurther -halfy revolution unlocksthe door by moving said platel 7fout of thatL position.-A lockingplate or tumbler 9T-iis mounted on a 10-finfthe barrel.y The upperjedge of said tumbler has taperedsurfaces 1v1-f' and,-l2,which `are engaged bya lip 513% jextendingonone side ofthe inner end of the key V 8-. The said barrel G-'- pivot pinhas a key slot 414e in which the tumbler' *9-- lies. When thekey is inserted it lies .at the side of said tumbler with the lip -13- of said keyfimmediately above the tumbler and in a position to engage the cam surface -llof the tumbler. vThe vwidth of the key slot- 14P- is reduced by a filler plate such as is shown in Fig. l0. The
straight position 15* of this plate lies below the path of Vthe key and the inner end -164 thereof liesin the path of theA key. The bar portionk -`17 in the outer kend of said llerplate reduces the entrance l widthr of thekey slot. Thus the lock is effectually safe-guarded against picking or being tampered with.
secured in the barrel -`6- and exerts va x f force against the inner` end of the tumbler 9 to'move said end in the recess .-5-
of the outer cylinder. This is possible when the barrel 6- is turned by the key until the end of said tumbler is moved to said`recess. When in this position the door -2-A is locked and the key is Withdrawn. The taperedsurface -l2-` of the tumbler prevents the key being Withdrawn While the barrel -6- is being rotated thereby. When the barrel 6 is moved to al position where the end of the` tumbler -9 may be forced by the spring '-18- into the recess -5*, and the key is moved out to clear the lip -13- from the tumbler to allow the surta-ce--lQ-of said tumbler to movein the key may be Withdrawn. The key can be Withdrawn only When the door is locked by the eccentric plate T- being in the dotted positiom Fig. 1.
i Having described my invention, I claim: l. A door lock comprising a stationary housinghavinga lateral recess extending from the inner end of the bore thereof, a rotatable cylinder in said housing having' an opening in the side thereof adapted to registeriivith the lateral recess in said housing, door-lockingmeans carried by said cylinder, a cylinder-locking plate pivotally mounted in said cylinder and having an outward extended end` which is adapted to enter the lateral recess in the-housing when the opening in the side of the cylinder is caused to register with said recess and whereby said cylinder is prevented from being rotated`r a housing having a 'lateral recess extending from the inner end ofthe bore thereof, a rotatable cylinder in said-housing having an opening in the inner side thereof adapted to register with the lateral recess in the housing, clooi'flocking means carried on said cylinder, a cylinder-.locking plate pivoted in said Vcylinder and having its inner end ex tended: outwardly and provided with an locking plate to move the same out of the lateral recess in the housing ivhereby the locking cylinder may be rotated to 'unlock said door. l i Y 3. A machine cabinet door lock adapted to be mounted on the cabinet door and conf sisting of a housing-securable at its inner end to said door. Said housing having fa longitudinal opening terminating on one side in' a lateral recess, a rotatable barrel in said an eccentric locking plate on the housing7 inner end of said barrel adapted to be moved therewith toa position to lock the door oi the cabinet', a 'tumbler pivotally vmounted in said barrel having a tapered extended pon tion adapted to enter the recess in the heus .ing when the barrel is moved tol a position whereby the eccentric locking plate locks the cabinet door, said tumbler also having a rearward extended portion, and a key in sertiblein said barrel having a portion en' gaging the tapered extendedportion ot the tumbler, whereby said barrel Iis unlocked from the housing and may be rotated by the key to unlock the cabinet door. t
In testimony ivhereot I a'ix my signature.l v
