SUBSOIL ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application filed June 11, 1919. Serial No. 303,269.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD L. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Keysville, in the county of Charlotte, tate of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Im orovements in subsoil Attachments for lows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows and particularly to subsoil attachments therefor.
One object of the present invention is toprovide a novel and improved device for attachment to the beam of a plow whereby subsoil plowing can be accomplished.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved structure ofthis character which can be readily attached to the beam of ordinary plow without modifications to the plow beam, thus rendering the ordinary plow beam usable for the act of subsoil plowing.
Other objects and advantages will be ap-.
parent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow beam having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation viewed from the opposite side from that of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the beam and attachment, showing the manner in which the subsoil plow shovel is adjustable.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a metal plow beam, in connection with which my invention is to be used, said beam being curved downwardly at its rear end to form the foot or standard 11. In using my invention, with the plow beam, it will be understood that the share and moldboard are not removed from the standard, thus permitting surface plowing as well as subsoil plowing.
The attachment includes a longitudinally curved stem 12 which fits on the rear curved portion of the beam and is secured in proper position thereon by the clips 13. The stem extends rearwardly and is thickened and bifurcated vertically, as at 15, to receive the forward reduced end of the subsoil standard or digging member 26. This member has at its rear end a foot 16 which curves downwardly and forwardly for engagement in the soil, as will be readily understood. A pivot bolt or pin 17 is disposed through the arms1 1 of the bifurcation 15 and the end of the member 26, whereby the latter is capable of vertical swinging movement. A
plate 19 is disposed horizontally at one side of the thickened portion and pivoted to one fork-arinl l at 18. Along the opposite side stands a second plate 19 constituting one arm of a right-angular lever whose other arm 20 rises to a handle, and the angle of the lever is pivoted to said portion at 18 opposite the first pivot 18. The rear ends of the arms 19 and 19' are formed with slots 21 which receive a rear bolt 28, to permit a lost motion as the member 16 swings on the pin 17 which pin is disposed rearwardly of the forward pivots. Secured on the enlargement 15 is a toothed segment 22 which is engaged by the hand actuated pawl or detent 23, carried by the lever 20. Thus, when the lever is rocked on its pivot the rear end of the arm 19 will cause the member 26 to swing upwardly or down wardly, according to whether the foot 16 is to dig into the soil to a greater or lesser depth. By means of the lever and its pawl, in conjunction with the toothed plate or segment 22, the plow member can be set into the desired position and firmly held in such position.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the device can be easily and quickly attached to a plow beam, without modification to the beam, at a point behind and below the share, moldboard and other parts of the regular plow, whereby surface and subsoil plowing can be accomplished at one and the same time.
What is claimed is:
A subsoil attachment for a plow beam including a stem longitudinally curved to fit the rear curvature of the plow beam, an enlargement on the rear end of the stem, a
digging member pivotally connected to the enlargement, a plate movably carried by the v-iilurgeinent and loosely and operatively engaged with the digging member, and an angle lever mounted on the other side of the enlargement and loosely and opemtively connected with the digging member and (:0- operating with the plate to raise and lower the digging me'znloer.
In testimony wliei'eefl I alfix my signanre, in the presen e of two wltnesses.
