TWYER PEEK-HOLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
Application filed March 26, 1920. Serial No. 368,951.
To all whom it nmg concern:
Be it known that I, EMRYK Dn'rna, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new jacent the sight or peelr hole, being destroyed by the heat of the furnace.
The principal object of the invention is to provide such means which may be readily applied to twyers now in use with as little inconvenience as possible.
fither objects and advantages of the peculiar construction will appear as the description thereof proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is side elevation of a common twyer elbow of a furnace shownpartly in section, and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the peek hole cap or cover common to such twyer elbows.
1 represents the elbow, and 2 the reduced horizontal extension thereupon, through which the interior of the furnace is viewed through the peek hole in the cover or cap 3, which is removably applied thereto. In practice common to such devices the cap 3, which is of metal, is applied directly to the end of the extension 2 and securely held thereupon by suitable bolts and links, not
washer made of heat resisting substance such as carbon of av composition similar to that used in arc lamps and for electric motor brushes, or the like, the washer portion. being shown at 7 and the bushing portion shown at 8. The bushing or central cylindrical portion 8 extends forwardly through the cap 3 and preferably somewhat beyond the outer face ofsame as shown in Fig. 1.
Asan additional feature of the invention I provide a bushing 9 which snugly fits within the extension 2 and forms a complete heat resisting lining therefor, the outer end of said bushing being flush with the outer end of the pipe 2, so that the washer portion 7 of the washer and bushing engaged with thecap will contact same, The bushing 9 is preferably of the same material. as the washer and bushing.
It is well known by those versed in the art that one of the principal difliculties as sociated with a peel: hole of this character is the burning out and destruction of the cap 3 as well as at times the destruction of the extension 2, the prevention of which I have successfully accomplished by the installation of the heat resisting members above described and the application and forms of which may be varied considerably from that illustrated, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a twyer peek hole of the character described and cap therefor, of a heat resisting lining within the peek hole and extending entirely through the cap, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a twyer elbow extension and peek hole cap therefor, of a fireproof member installed intermediate of the extension and. the cap and extending centrally through the latter, there being an axially disposed peek hole through the member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a twyer elbow extension and peek hole cap therefor, of a fire-proof bushing within the extension and a fire-proof washer intermediate of the cap and the extension whereby to prevent excessive heat contacting the walls of the bushing or the peek hole cap.
4. The combination with a twyer peek hole cap or cover, of a combined fire-proof bushing and washer installed intermediate of the cap and the twyer and extending out- Wardly centrally and beyond the cap for direct engagement with the glass sight c0111- 111011 to such devices.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. EMRYK DATKA. Witnesses ELLEN Tiinoiun S. GEO. STEVENS.
