Description

A. 1. FREY.
FLEXIBLE TUBING GOMPRESSOR.
v APPLIQATION FILED )AN. 21,1920. K .v Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
unirsi) sra FLEXIBLETUBING COMPRESSOR.
Y insenso.
To all wwmc't may concern. 1 I
Y 1 Be ity known that Al, AUGUST J. lnnx, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn,` in the Vcity and State` of New York, have invented a new.`
VVVand useful improvement in Flexible-Tubing Compressors7 of which the 'following is a specification. i 'y r YThe object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction,
i form and arrangement of the :several parts compressor may be effectively used with tub-l "plan appliedito a flexible tubing,
of a flexible tubing compressor whereby the ingl of different sizes and having walls of Varying thicknesses and in whichthe parts are made very/strong and light.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character in which the action ,isV
very powerful andthe friction is materially reduced between the lever and the movableV jaw.v
is rep esented `in the ings, in which, Y Y
- lligure lvrepresents my compressor in top the ,jaws
accompanying drawbeing closed.
ylig. '2 represents a longitudinal section taken in the plane of the line H-ll of Fig;. 1. ig. taken Fig. 2.
Fig. 4f rlpresents a transverse section taken in the p a -e o the line lV-TVO Fig. 2.
lllig. epi'fs 'elevatioin th., yaws being open7 and Y 6 represents a bottom plan Aview of the compressor.
The compressor comprises a sheet metal body portion developed into a fixed jaw 1 and a movable liaw 2 connecter by ak spring tending to hold the jaws open.
represents a horizontal. section in the plane the line lll- Ill of portion o:
The .fixed jaw 1 is provided with side ears l which extend upwardly beyond the movable )aw 2.
The compressing lever 5 may be made ofl sheet metal and it is'provided with side lugs y6 which enter recesses 7 in the side ears l of the fixed jaw for hinging the compressing lever to the said cars. lever is provided with depending side flanges 8, the forward ends of which bear against the movable faw 2. The relationship of the bez-ring` point-s of the flanges 8 Vto the hinge Specification of Letters latent.
A ractical embodiment' of m invention P .ents the coinpi'essorin side This compressing v lugs Gy such that when the lever is swung into one position, the jaws of the compressor are permitted vto open 'and7 when the lever is swung into another position the jawsv are closed.l 'lliefcompressing 'lever is deand the hinge lugs 6,?so that when the lever is'aswung to fclose the jaws itv mayV yield i slightly to compensate for tubing l.walls of varying thicknesses. i
The fixed jaw 1 is provided Vwith crossed stiffening ribs 10 at the base of the uprising ears l opposite the lbearing Vpoints Yof the flanges of the compressing lever soia-sato materially strengthen the fixed'jawv atV this Point.
The movable isprovided. with longitudinally arranged stifiening ribs 11 foi-nn ing vgrooves 12 for guiding the bearing points of the 'lianges 8 ofthe compressing lever in their travel along the j aw. A
The front edges of the ears 4l are recessed, as shown at 13, so that vwhen thek flexible tubing is compressed'between the transverse lips lll and 15 of the xed andinovable jaws,"
the tubing' will have more space to! spread f laterally. ThisL is especially desirable, where thejcoinpressor is used with large tubing.V Y
The bearing points of the flanges 8 are `preferably rounded as shown to give a smooth action with a minimum amount of l friction -when the compressing lever is swung to its' different close -the jaws.
Itwill be seen that by locating the hinged connection between the compressing lever andthe cars of the 'fixed ]aw at a distance positions to open or i baclr of the lbearing points of theflanges and by providing the loop Qbetween the hinged connection and the bearing points7 a slight yielding action is obtained which is very valuable in insuring the pi'opervclosure of the flexible tubing without danger of. straining or distorting the working parts of the compressor. It will furthermore be seen that by providing the jaws with strengthen# Patented Nev.' es," ieee.A Application ined January 27.1920. serial No; 354,404. i I
ing ribs, the jaws are prevented from bending when strain yis placed thereon and -a more eiicient compressor is thereby obtained.v l v It is evident that various changes may be made in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; ,hCIlCQ l do notwish to limit myself to the; particular embodiment herein shown and described, butl/Vhat I claim is: i
l. A flexible tubing compressor comprising fixed and movable javvsand a compressing lever constructed to yield slightly when swunO into position to close the jaws.
2. f flexible tubing compressor comprising a sheet meta-l body portion developed into fixed and movable jaws, the fixed jaw having uprising ears, and a compressing lever hinged to said ears Vand having longitudinally arranged depending flanges bean' ing against the lmovable j avv.
3. if flexible tubing compressor comprising a sheet metal body portion developedv into fixed Iand movable jaws, the fixed jaw having uprising ears, and a compressing lever `vhinged tto said Vears and having longitudinally arranged depending flanges lbear- `ing -against the `movable jaw, the lever being so hinged to the ears with respect to the bearing points of said flanges as vto yield slightly when vthe .lever is swung to closethe jaw-s. l
4. A flexible tubing compressor comprising a sheet metal body portion 'developed yinto fixed and movable jaws, the fixed jaw having uprising ears, and a Vcompressing lever hinged t'o said ears :and having longitudinally arranged depending flanges bearing -against Ithe :movable jaw, the lever being fdeveloped into a loop between the flanges and the yhinged connection to permit vthe lever to yield slightly wihen vswung to close the jaws.`
5. A flexible vtubing compressor comprising a sheet` metal body portion developed vlever hinged to said ears and having longi- 'tudinally arranged depending flanges `bearing against the movable jaw, the movable 'jaw having longitudinally arranged stiffening ribs forming grooves for guiding the n bearing points of the flanges in their travel along lthe jaw, the fixed jaw having stiftening ribs at Athe v'base of the ears opposite the bearing points ofv the said flanges. Y
7. A flexible tubing compressorl comprising a sheet metal body portion developed into 'fixed and movable jaws, the fixed j avv` having uprising ears, and a compressing lever hinged to ysaid ears Vand having longi-r tudinally arranged depending lflanges bearing against the movable j aw,`the front edges of theV uprisingjeais being recessed to givev additional rooml for lateral displacement of the `flexibletubing when the tubing is compressed by the closure of the jaws.
In testimony, that I claim Zthe foregoingV as in invention I have signed mL name i -this 26th day of January, 1920.
