' Application filed March 8,
To all whomz't may concern.
Be it known that we, SzYMoN SLonoDzIAN and Joznr OnnnLnY'rAN, citizens of Poland, residing at Newark, in the county'of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
at a time to a This invention relates to certain new, and useful improvements in match boxesof that type involving means to deliver matches one person through manual actuatlon.
'The principal object of the present in-, vention is to provide a match delivering receptacle with associated delivering mechanism of such character as to be extremely durable and efficient in operation as well as simple in construction for cheapness of manufacture.
With the above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed. r
In the drawings forming a part ofthis specification, and wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views, c

the lever actuated pawl carrying member which actuates the'ratchet wheel and a portion of the actuating. lever therefor.
Referring more in detail to the several views, the present inventionembodies a vertical elongated receptacle or casing 5, the rear vertical wall of which is extended some distance above and below the top and bottom thereof and is provided with apertures Specification of Letters Patent. wall, of thereceptacle by means of a horizontal partition 9 whose upper face is rear wardly and downwardly inclined as at 10'to insure movement of the matches ll down wardly toward the drum 12.v The partition,
9 forms upper and lower compartments at one side of the chamberS, theupper com partment being in the form of'a hopper having a lid 18 whiehlmay be hinged as at 14 so that the said cover may be raised for refilling the hopper when found necessary. The lower compartment above mentioned contains the drum 12, and this drum is provided with a series of peripheral-transverse grooves 15 which are, in practice, made of such size as to allow only one match to fall thereinto at a time, although the showing in the drawing is somewhat exaggerated toclearly show the structure. The partition 9 is provided with an opening as seen in :Fig. 2so as to permit the matches 11 to pass from the hopper 16 onto the periphcry of the drum 12, and this partition is curved on its underside so as to conform tothe shape of the drum112 and lie quite close to the periphery of the latter. 7
The drum 12 is secured upon a shaft 17 which is mounted for-rotation horizontally l8iwhich isrotatably fitted in a similarly;
shapedopening 19 provided in the partition 7. The drum .12 isprovided With a still I further reducedportion 20ywhich extends into the chamber 8 and has a ratchet wheel 21' fas ened thereon.
A blo k 22=is vertically sl dable within thechamber 8 beneath the shaft .17, and this blockis normally retained in lowered position against thebottom of thefireceptacle 5 by means of a coiled tension spring 23 which has one end fastened as at 24 to the bottom of the receptacleti and whichis fastened at its otlierorupperendto the top 1 of the block 22 by means of the screw 25 or the like. A pin 26 projects upwardly from the upper end of the slide block 22 so as ter, and this pawl projects upwardly be yond the upper end of the block 22 and has its upper end angularly bent rearwardly as at 28 so as to normally engage the tooth which is disposed beneath the tooth which the pin-26 engages. The block 22 is provided with forwardly projecting ears 29 be neath the pawl 27, and the inner end of the lever 30 is pivoted to said ears and is pivotally mounted for vertical rocking movement upon a horizontal rod 31 which passes through the hub 32 of the lever 30 and which is supported by the partitions 7 and the adjacent side wall of the casing 5s The lever 30 extends outwardly through a vertical elongated slot 33 provided in the front wall of the casing o, and is provided upon its free end exteriorly of the casing with a finger-piece 34 adapted to be engaged by the finger for depressing the lever 30 so as to cause upward sliding movement of the block 22. It will be understood that when the lever 30 is depressed for a certain distance, the pin 26 will cause suflicient rotary movement of the drum 12 for allowing one match to drop from said drum, while if the lever 30 is depressed further, the spring pressed pawl 27 will efiect a further rotation ofthe drum 12 for causing another match to be delivered immediately after the delivery of the first match. As the pawl 27 ispositioned normally in a vertical plane inwardly of the vertical plane of the periphery of the ratchet wheel 21, it is necessary' that the same yield rearwardly when the block 22 is forced upwardly, and said pawl 27 is therefore formed of resilientsheet metal and is spaced from the block 22 so as to permit this yielding. The bottom of the casing 5 is forwardly and downwardly inclined and terminates in a pocket 35 adwhere said front wall is provided withan opening 36 of suiiicient size to permit the entrance of a persons hand for removing thematches as they are delivered from the 7 hopperlfiby the drum 12 to the pocket 35.. It'will thus be see'n that I have provided an extremely efficient means for delivering one or two matches at a time, as desired and at will. The grooves 15' of the drum 12 are laterally enlarged or'widened attheir ends as; at 15"" so as to; accommodate the heads acent the front wall of the receptacle 5 shell 37 so that its'l'ower 'end is normally pressed into engagement with the teeth of the'r'atchet wheel 21 by means of a leaf spring 39 which is carried by the front wall of the receptacle 5 and which has'its free lower 'end' bearing upon said lever 38, the other end of the lever 38 having a hammer to secured thereto and lying close to the shell 37 so: that when the ratchet wheel 21 is rotated, the hammer 10 is forcibly pressed against the shell 37 for sounding an alarm upon each delivery of a match from the drum12. ,This alarm is somewhat useful when the present device is used in public places where mischievous persons are likely to make improper use of the same and enables a proprietor to be advised of such improper use should the same occur. r
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and operation of the present invention, as well as the-advantages of the same, will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed'as new is:
A match delivering receptacle comprising a casing having a front wall with a vertical elongated slot in the lower portion thereof and provided with a transverse partition dividing the casing into an upper hopper anda lower chamber therebeneath a drum journaled upon a horizontal axis within said lower chamber and having peripheral grooves arranged to receive matches from said hopper and to deliver the same to said lower chamber-when rotated, avertical partition within said casing forming a chamber at one side of said drum and said hopper, a ratchet wheel connected with said drum so as to rotate with the latter and arranged within the last named chamber, a slide block vertically movable within the last named chamber and normally spring pressed in a lowered position, a rigid pawl carried by said slide block and operatively associated with said ratchet wheel so as to be capable of only rotating said drum a distance sufficient for delivering one match from said hopper to said lower chamber upon each upward movement of said slide block, a second pawl carried bysaid slideblock and comprising a-resilient sheet metal strip having 7 rality of matches from the hopper" to the lower chamber each time the slide block is plurality of matches into the lower chamber entirely elevated, and a finger actuated lever at will. connected to said slide block and extending In testimony whereof we aflix our signa- 10 through the slot of the front wall of the turesi 5 casing whereby said slide block may be caused to totally or partially raise for eifect- SZYMON SLOBODZIAN.
