IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES'FOR LIFTING AND CARRYING BAIERELS, BOXES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,958, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BABOOCK, of Ohicopee, in the countyof Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Machine for Lifting and Carrying Barrels and Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the combination of a horizontal lever with an adjustable arm, both provided with a hook at one extremity, in such.
either headed up or open, on a level,or up and down steep, narrow, or winding stairs without injury to wood-work, stairs, paint, or carpets. The annexed drawing represents a machine embodying my invention.
A A is a horizontal lever, which should be so constructed as to give the greatest strength in the smallest compass. B is the extremity,
so bent in the form of a hook or grapple as to give the most secure hold of the upper chine of a barrel, and is provided with teeth, as shown at B to gripe firmly upon the edge of a box. 0 isa movable dog, adjustable upon the lever A A and fixed by a set-screw, D. Upon the under side of this dog is fastened by a hinge-joint the upper extremity of the movable arm E F, which has near its center a projection, G, and at its lower extremity a similar one, both of which have an opening for the passage of the adjustable rod H J, which is fixed by a set-screw, as shown at D. The lower extremity of the rod H J is widened and provided with teeth, similar and for the same purpose as the grapple B, as shown at H 1 is a section of the bar A A. All the parts are constructed of iron or steel.
' I claim as my invention The combination of the horizontal bar A A and the arm E F with the rod H J, either or both adjustable, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
