SHIPPING CONTAINER 0B CASE FOR SHIPPING FILM-HEELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1%20.
Application filed May 24, 1920. Serial No. 383,798.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EMIL F. HOLINGER and CHARLES L. GULroK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at 459 Summit avenue, Jersey City, and 194i l lhite street, Orange, respectively, in the counties of Hudson and Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping Containers or Cases for Shipping Film-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shipping containers or cases and has special reference to a container or case for shipping film reels such as are used in the motion picture business.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved shipping case having a retractile rack or cabinet therein for holding the reels separately so that any number of reels up to the full capacity of the case may be shipped without danger of injury from rattling about d iring handling.
A third important object of the invention is that any film reels contained in the cabinet may be withdrawn therefrom and again replaced in the cabinet without disturbing any other reels therein.
A fourth important object of the invention is the provision of a case for the purpose which will be of an improved shape having great constructive strength, freedom from rolling, occupies a minimum of space and is especially adapted to the remaining constructive details.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel de tails of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like charactors of reference indicate likeparts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a shipping case constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, a portion of the casing being broken away to show part of the container cabinet.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 of the upper part of the device.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device,
showing the cabinet in its elevated or re tra oted position.
' F 5 is a vertical section through one In the embodiment shown there is pro- I Vided a casing 10 of general triangular prismatic form, the corners of the casing being rounded, as clearly seen in Fig. 1. Adjacent the top of each corner within the casing is a guide plate 11 securely fixed to the casing, as by welding, soldering or other proper means. These plates serve as guides for frame members or legs 12 made preferably of fiat metal and fixed at their upper ends to the cover or top 13 of the casing, this top being provided with the usual depending flanges M around its periphery arranged to fit ti .Qhtly on the upper or open end of said casing. Moreover, the guide plates 11 form stops against which the outwardly bent lower ends 15 of the legs 12 engage when the top is lifted so that complete withdrawal of the legs is prevented.
Firmly welded or otherwise secured to the legs 12 are shelves 16, the space between adjacent shelves being of proper size to ac commodate the standard width of reel commonly used in motion picture machines. Each shelf will thus support one reel and, as can be seen from Fig. 4:, each reel is freely accessible and can be removed or replaced without disturbing any other. The shelves are of general triangular form and on two sides of the set of shelves are provided stop plates 17. the remaining side being left open for insertion and removal of reels. /Vithin the casing and fixed thereto is a third stop plate 18 which not only assists in guiding the cabinet, but also in the closure therefor, legs fixed to closed position of the device holds the reels from lateral movement, the size of the shelves being of proper size to cause the reels to fit snugly between the three step plates when the case isclosed. Adjacent the bottom of each leg is a bent spring wire 19 arranged to form a snap latch so that, with the cabinet elevated, the latches will engage on top of the respective plates 11 and hold the cabinet elevated until it is desired to lower it, this operation being readily performed by pushing the latches inward to free them from the plates 11 In order to provide a handle for the case, means for raising the cabinet and a lock to prevent raising the cabinet out of the case when it is not desirable a simple device is employed which is best seen in Fig. 3. By
reference to this figure it will be seen that a cup-shaped depression 20 is formed in the center ofthe top 13 and extending across this depression through, suitable openings in the side walls thereof is a sliding bolt 21 having a downwardly ofi'set end 22 engage able beneath one of the plates 11 when the cover is closed. To lreep the bolt from accidentally moving from beneath its plate 11 a spring latch 22 is secured to the bolt and passes through the side wall of the depression 20, the latch being so shaped that it engages the wall, as shown in Fig. 3, whenever the device is locked. One end of the latch projects into the depression so that it may be engaged by the operators finger and moved upward, thus allowing the bolt to move. ln addition to the latch, the bolt is provided with openings 23 for the reception of a sealing wire which, when passed through the openings, will engage the wall of the depression and prevent retraction of said bolt.
There has thus been provided a simple and ellicient cevice of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
.Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A shipping case including a casing, a closure therefor, legs projecting from the closure into the casing, and spaced shelves carried by the legs.
2. A shipping case including a casing, a closure therefor, legs projecting from the closure into the casing, spaced shelves carried by the legs, and means to hold said legs releasably against movement into said casingx.
.3. sh pping case lncluding a casing, a
the closureand pro ecting nto the casing, spaced shelves carr ed by the legs, means to limit withand means to hold said legs releasably against movement into the casing when withdrawn.
4. a shipping case including a casing, a closure therefor, legs fixed to the closure and projectin into the casing, spaced shelves carried by the legs, means to limit with drawal oi the legs from the casing, means to hold said legs releasably in withdrawn position, and other releasable means to hold the closure shut and the legs within the casing.
A shipping case including a casing having an open upper end, a lid fitting said upper end, legs fixed to the lid and projecting within the casing, spaced shelves carried by the legs, guides in the casing for the legs, and stops on the legs engageable with the guides to limit withdrawal of the legs.
6. A shipping case including a casing having an open upper end, a lid fitting said upper end, legs fixed to the lid and pr o jecting within the casing, spaced shelves carried by the legs, guides in the casing for the legs, stops on the legs engageable with the guides to limit withdrawal of the legs, and spring latches on said "legs engageable with the guides to hold the legs releasably when withdrawn.
7. A shipping case including a casing having an open upper end, a lid fitting said upper end, legs fixed to the lid and project ing within the casing, spaced shelves carried by the legs, guides in the casing for the legs, stops on the legs engageable with the guides to limit withdrawal of the legs, spring latches on said legs engageable with the guides to hold the legs releasably when withdrawn, and lockingmeans to hold the lid closed and the legs against withdrawal.
8. A shipping case including a substantially triangular casing having an open upper end, guide plates fixed within the casingadjacent said upper end to a top for said casing having a depressed cup-shaped central portion, flat legs fixed to the top and bearing against the guide plates spaced shelves carried by the legs, out-turned feet on said legs forming stops to engage the guide plates, spring latches carried by the legs close to said feet, a bolt extending across the depressed portion of the top and passing slidably through the wall of said portion, the end of said bolt being engageable beneath a guide plate, and a spring latch carried by the bolt to engage said wall and prevent accidental retraction of the bolt.
In testlmony whereof wehave aiiixed our signatures.
EMIL F. HOLINGER. CHARLES L; GUL'ICK.
