APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING DRESS-SUITCASES.
Specification of Letters Eatent. Pittetlted NOV. 16, 1920.
Application filed October 19, 1917. Serial No. 197,478.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY L. PLUMMER, a citizen of the United states. residing at .letersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of \Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Manufacturing Dresstluitcases; and I do hereby declare the following; to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper bOX and like constructions and more particularly to the construction of elements in the erection of suit cases.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a process for the manufacture and also to provide an apparatus for the practice of the process whereby the principal bottom or body member of dress suit cases, for instance, can be made economicallv, rapidly and accurately. and particularly to provide for the production of dress suit case bottoms of various sizes. It is another object of the present invention to provide an a aratus, capable of ready adjustment to facilitate the manufacture of dress suit case bottoms or the like. and especially to provide an apparatus having relativelv adjustable male and female cuttin members to facilitate the cutting of the blanks to the desired and requisite outline.
Wi h the e and other obiects in view. the present invention consists in the method of and apparatus for manufacturing blanks for box constructions and especially for the manufacture of dress suit case elements, one form of apparatus for practising the method being illustrated in the accompanyinc drawing. in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of blank,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the folded blank,
Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section showing one part of a machine or apparatus for cutting the stock. and,
Fig. 4 is a vertical section partly in elevation of the apparatus.
The present invention contemplates particularly the production of the bottom or body element of a dress suit case. a form of which is illustrated in plan view in Fig. 1 and whi h is shown in folded position in Fig. 2. The blank comprises a substantially oblong central panel" 2 which? may be of suitable proportions and is foldable along lines A and B, the outer portions 3 and l forming the sides of the box element, these latter sides being foldable on lines 0 and d to form flange 0 and. are similarly foldable at their ends to form flanges 7 the bot tom 2 having also end flanges 9. The com mon practice in. the manufacture of boxes of this type in order to facilitate the proper foldin -of the bottom memberhas been to nick Irom corners h-h of one side of a previously cut blank chips forming notches of suitable outline and then to transfer the blank from which the corner notches have been chipped or cut to another machine and then to cut out the intermediate angular chips forming notches i-2'. In this practice, the corner notches hh at one side of the bottom, have been cut out and the blank turned side for side and the other corners chipped out. One of the particular objects of present invention is to provide a process for manufacturing these blanks which contemplates simultaneously cutting the required notches throughout the entire blank at one single step or if preferred, may be practised by the cutting of all of the notches h-h and z'i at one side only of the blank which then may be reversed side for side and all of the notches at the other side cut.
T o se"ure this step in the manufmture of the box bottom, I utilize a suitable form of cutting or punching mechanism provided with suitablecorner cutters H and movable toward and cooperable with female cutters H and having also male and female intermechate notch cutters I and I. The several male cutters adjustably attached by bolts or other fastening means 10 to a head 11 or carrier which may be operated in any suitable manner toward and from a bed or support 12 upon which the complementary female members are provided, these latter also being relatively adjustable to the'becl 12 and adapted to be S8"UICl thereon by bolts or other fastening means 10. One or the other of the members 11 and 12. the latter in the present instance. is provided with a set of edge gages 15 adjustably secured to the respective member as by bolts or screws 16.
With this apparatus, the process of manufacturing a blank of the given size is to set the edge gages 15 with respect to the several cutters, a distance suflicient to produce notches as /L-h and i of the requisite depth into the edgeo'i' the blank andto set the respective cutters H-H and the cut ters 1-1 in suitable disposition to each other by loosening up their fastening screws or bolts 10, these cutters being provided With holders having means permitting relative adjustment to each other and shown in the present instance, as belngpr'ovi'ded with slots 10 through which the bolts pass. Having adjusted the cutters with relation to each other so as t'o' produce thenotches at the predetermined distances; the blank is then inserted until'it has a proper en-- gagement with the edge gages: 15 and then the apparatus operated so' that the'cutt'er's sever the chipspfrom the blank at theplaces predetermined;
While it is preferably that-the apparatus may be utilizedforcuttiugialtof thenotches in both edges of the blank at one time, the
cutting. of one edge only may be practised, if it is desired, the form of the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 3 being but one-half of a duplicate set of cutters arranged at the opposite side of the apparatus, so that all ofthe cuts may be made at one time.
What is claimed is:
An apparatus for notching the cut bodies of suit cases, comprising in combination, a tablegahead, adjustable end andsid'e stops mountedon one of said members and a plurality of" complementary cutters, said butte'r's c'ompr1s1ng vertical and angular-1y dis posed cutting edges; bases perpendicular theieto and each provided with a slot whereby said cutters may be independently adjusted, alined' and removably secured to said 'table andhead;
In" testimony whereof I afliXm-y signature.
