My invention relatesto machines for forming carton blanks and has for its object to provide a machine for this purpose which forms at one operation a number of rows of carton blanks creased on the lines on which the material is to be folded and cut on such lines as may be necessary to enable sides and ends to be folded in to overlap.
vMany articles of merchandise, particularly articles of food, cooked and uncooked in a dry state, are put up for sale in cartons formed of thick paper, usually bearing printed matter of descriptive or advertising character. These cartons are preferably formed in one piece from a blank which is creased and cut so that it may readily be bent to shape and held in shape by suitable means such as interlocking portions or adhesives or adhesive strips. As the cost of these cartons is a matter of importance the character of the paper and the time element in the process of forming the blank as well .as the cost of the apparatus for forming the blanks and the cost of keeping it in repair must be considered.
It is an object of my invention to provide a machine which will form a number of rows of carton blanks at a single operation, each carton creased along the lines on which the material must be folded, and out along such lines as require to be cut, to permit over-lapping and interlocking and to effect this at high speed.
A further object is to provide a machine in which the dies necessary for effecting the creasing and the dies necessary for effecting the cutting will all be formed of strips of suitable material.
A further object of my invention isto provide special means for so holding the die strips in place that they will be firmly held when in use, but may be readily adjusted or removed for sharpening or repair or to permit substitution.
A further object of my invention is to provide separate means for effecting the creasing and for effecting the cutting and means separate from the creasing means and from the cutting means for separating the rows of blanks one from, another.
With the objects above indicated and other objects hereinafter set forth, my invention consists of and comprises the construction and combination of elements hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings 1 and 2 indicate respectively upper and lower cylinders carrying creasing dies. 3 and 4 indicate respectively upper and lower cylinders carrying cutting dies. 5 and 6 indicate respectively upper and lower rolls of a pair of feed rolls for feeding the strip of paper 7 to the creasing and cutting cylinders. 8 and 9 indicate respectively upper and lower slitting rolls for cutting the broad sheet of material '7 into the widths required for a single carton blank, the upper roll 8 carrying knife 10. 11 and 12 indicate respectively upper and lower delivery rolls for separating the out out carton blanks as they leave the cutting cylinders.
Creasing cylinders 1 and 2 are carried respectively on shafts 13 and 14 and cutting cylinders 3 and 4 are carried respectively by shafts 15 and 16. Feed rolls 5 and 6 are arranged in advance of creasing cylinders 1 and 2, and are carried on shafts 1'7 andy18. Slitting rolls 8 and 9 are arranged between the creasing and the cutting 10 cylinders and are carried on shafts 19 and 20. Delivery rolls l1 and 12 are arranged in rear of the cutting cylinders and are carried by shafts 21 and 22.
Between the creasing cylinders 1 and 2, and 110 the slitting rolls 8 and 9 is a compensator roll 23 on shaft 24 which is carried by a suitably pivoted frame so that the roll may be moved to act upon the sheet of material 7 somewhat like a belt tightener to take up any slack and to longitudinally register the creased pattern with the cut pattern. A. pivot shaft 25 carries the frame for supporting the compensator roll 23 and its shaft 24.
It will be understood that the shafts of the creasing and cutting cylinders and the shafts of the delivery and slitting rolls are so connected by gearing as to be driven in synchronism by any convenient power. The compensator roll 23 will be so mounted as to rotate freely. Delivery rolls 11 and 12 will be geared so as to be driven at a peripheral speed somewhat greater than the peripheral speed of the creasing and cutting cylinders so as to exert a pulling action upon the cut off carton blanks sufficient to separate them and, in order that this may be done effectively, the delivery rolls will be alternately separated so as to. permit the cut off blanks to be fed between them by the action of the cutting cylinders 3 and 4 and then caused to approach each other to grip the sheet material 7 between them and, being driven at a peripheral speed greater than the peripheral speed of the cutting cylinders, will exert a pull sufficient to sever each carton blank from the one following it.
The creasing cylinders 1 and 2 are substantially alike in construction except that the upper cylinder carries the male member of the creasing dies and the lower cylinder 2 carries the female creasing dies, and the description of one will be sufficient. The cylinder is formed of a series of sections each having a die carrying portion 31 of the full diameter of the cylinder,
' between hub portions 32 of lesser diameter.
Against the side of portion 31 are secured the dies 34, 35 for forming the creases lengthwise of the carton blanks indicated at 36, 3'? in Figure 1. These dies are here shown as fiat strips of steel or other suitable metal suitably curved as shown in Figure 3, and are secured against the sides of the portion 31 by bolts through openings 38, 39.
In the peripheral face of the portion 31 are formed recesses rectangular in face view extending radially inward towards the axis of the cylinder having their end walls 41 and 42, that is, the walls extending in a direction parallel with the axis of the cylinder, inclined toward each 55* I block 43 may be provided on the inclined face which bears against blade 45 with a projection 47 which enters a notch 48 in the blade.
To enable the clamping block to be secured in position it is provided with a central opening 49 adapted to receive a securing bolt 50 and having its outer end enlarged to form a recess 51 of sufficient diameter to receive the head of the bolt and extending inward a sufficient distance to permit the outer end of the head of the 1 bolt to be well within the peripheral face of the cylinder. Bolt 50 screws into screwthreaded opening 52 in the portion 31.
The blades 34 and 35 forming the longitudinal creases and the blades 45 and 46 for the lateral or cross creases are both shown as formed or" flat blades of steel or other suitable material blades 45, 46, being straight and blades 34, 35 being curved to fit the cylinder.
While in the drawings the creases on which the carton blank is to be folded are shown as either longitudinal or lateral, it is to be understood that the construction and arrangement may be readily modified to provide for creasing the blank on diagonal, circular, or other curved lines. And While in the drawings the apparatus is shown arranged to cut the blank on lateral lines only, except as regards a short tab 60, the sides of which are inclined, and not to cut the blank on longitudinal lines as the longitudinal cuts necessary to separate the rows of carton blanks are made by the slitting rolls 8 and 9, it is however, to be understood that the cutting blades carried by the cutting cylinder may be arranged to effect longitudinal or circular or curved cuts if desired.
The diameter of the cutting cylinder shown is such that the periphery of each is equal to the length of four carton blanks, so that with each rotation four carton blanks are perfected. It is, however, to be understood that, depending upon the size of the carton to be formed, and upon the diameter of the cylinders a single rotation of the cylinder may perfect one, two, three or more cartons.
The cutter blades 55 carried by the cutting cylinders are, like the creasing blades 45 of the creasing cylinders, formed of strips of fiat metal, the blades of the upper cylinder being sharp on their contacting edges and the blades carried by the lower cylinder being shaped to aiford a face against which the cutting edge of the upper blade may act effectively. The blades 55 for eifecting the lateral cuts are held in recesses of the same shape as recesses 40 above described, by clamping blocks 43. Recesses' for receiving cutting blades for forming angular or curved. cuts should be modified in form to correspond to the shape of the out to be formed.
In order to cut the tab it is necessary to out along the end line of the tab, line 61, to out on the inclined side lines 62, 63, and to cut from the base of the inclined edge lines 62, 63, to the edge lines of ahe carton blank at 64, 65. The end line out 61 extends to the side lines of the carton blank. This eliminates on each side of the tab 60 a small piece of material 66, ,67, bounded by line 61, 62 (or 63) and 64 (or 65) and by the side line of the blank. To provide for cutting this tab 60 I provide between two adjacent recesses 40 at equi-distant points on the periphery of the cutting cylinder radial portions '70, 71, of somewhat greater thickness than the material between recesses 40 at other points on the periphery of the cylinder and these portions '70, '71, are cut to a depth from the periphery of the cylinder corresponding to the depth of recess 44. In the lower one of the cutting cylinders an anvil or resistance block '72 is seated on portion '70 and is held there by suitable binding screws passing there through and threaded into portion or by a clamping block 43 on each side. In the upper cutting cylinder a cutting blade extends the full length of the cylinder, or at least along the length of the cylinder from edge to edge of the iii blank against one wall of'the recessformed by the cut away portion 70. And against the opposite wall of the recess are arranged cutting blades 77, 78, and each of the length necessary for cutting line 64'or 65; Between the cutting blade 75 against one wall of the recess and cutting blades 77 and 78, against the other wall are arranged means for holding cutting blades 80 and 81 for cutting inclined side lines 62 and 68. The means for this purpose comprise the centre block82 with inclined sides wider at its inner end with opening 83. through it for a securing screw, this opening being enlarged at its outer end to receive the head of the retaining screw, and side blocks 84 and 85 each having its outer end extending outward from the base at a right angle but at such angle to the longitudinal line of the blank as may be necessary to cut the side edges of the tab at the desired angle. Outside of each of blocks 84 and 85 are blocks 86, 86, fitting the recess and having their faces parallel with and opposite the inclined face of block 84 or 85 formed at the same angle so as to form with block 84 or 85 a clamp- Iing means for holding the cutting blade 80 or 81 for lines 62, 63.
In assembling the cutting means for cutting tab 60 the cutting blade 75 is placed against wall 41 with its bottom edge resting on the recessed l portion 70', cutting blades 77 and 78 are placed in position against the other wall 42 of the recess. with their bottom edges resting on recessed portion 70. Clampingblocks. 86, 86, are then placed in position holding cutters 75, 77- and 78 in posi- I tion. Cutting blades 80 and 81 are then placed in position with their bottom edges resting on recessed portion 70 and with their outer faces against the inner faces of clamping blocks 86, 86. Centre block 82 being secured in position,

The ends of cutting blades 80 and 81 are preferably beveled off so that the ends of the cutting edges will abut directly against the sides Iof the cutting edges of cutting blades 75, 77
and 78.
The apparatus shown and described is to receive a strip 7 of paper or other material of suitable thickness and character for use as a l carton and of a Width sufficient to make five carton blanks. The sheet of material as it comes from the supply roll passes between feed rolls 5, 6, to the creasing cylinders 1, 2, and, as it passes between these cylinders the die blades l 34, 35, form longitudinal creases of such depth as may be desired. and the die blades 45, 46, form successive lateral creases. The sheet of material then passes to the slitting rolls 8, 9, which cut the material in the longitudinal lines which separate one row of carton strips from another. The strips thus formed pass as a sheet to cutting cylinders 3, 4, and as the strips pass between these cylinders the die blades 55, 56, effect lateral cuts which extend from the edges of a blank inward on the lines of lateral creases formed by the creasing cylinders and by cutting blades 75, '77, and 78, and 80, 81, the tabs 60 are formed, the cutting blades '75 serving to separate each carton blank from the next.

roller 23 must be such that the lateral cutting blades 55', 56, will out the blanks in line with creases formed by creasing blades 45, 46.
On the ends of the creasing cylinders 1, 2', are bearing rolls 26, 2'7, and 'on the ends of cutting cylinders 3, 4, are bearing rolls 28, 29.
While the apparatus shown and described will form carton blanks of a particular form only, the structural features may readily be made use of in constructing creasing and cutting cylinders adapted for forming cartons differing in size or arrangement or form of bottoms, sides and ends, the difference being only in the diameter of the cylinders and size and form and spacing of the recesses and clamping blocks, and, of course, in the length and linear shape of the creasing and cutting blades.
While in the apparatus shown a single pair of creasing cylinders and a single pair of cutting cylinders is shown, it should be understood that more than one pair of creasing cylinders and more than one pair of cutting cylinders may be used. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a machine for forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its walls on a plane of a' radius of the cylinder adapted to receive a fiat strip of metalone edge of which is adapted to serve as a die, the recess having its opposite wall inclined inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder, and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face adapted to bear against the die strip and having its opposite face tapered inward, and means for securing the clamping block in the recess.
2. In a machine for forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its walls on a plane of a radius of the cylinder adapted to receive a fiat strip of metal one edge of which is adapted to serve as a die, the recess having its opposite wall inclined inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder, and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face adapted to bear against the die strip and having its opposite face tapered inward, and having an opening through it adapted to receive a securing bolt.
3. In a machine for forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its walls on a plane of a radius of the cylinder adapted to receive a flat strip of metal one edge of which is adapted to serve as a die, the recess having its opposite wall inclined inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder, and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face adapted to bear against the die strip and having its opposite face tapered inward and having an opening through it for a retaining bolt, the opening at its outer end being of such diameter and depth as to receive the head of a retaining bolt.
4. In a machine for forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its walls on a plane of a radius of the cylinder adapted to receive a fiat strip of metal one edge of which is adapted to serve as a die the recess having its opposite wall inclined inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder, and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face adapted to bear against the die strip and having its opposite face tapered inward and means for securing the clamping block in the recess, comprising a bolt extending inward through the clamping block.
5. In a machine for forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its walls on-the plane of a radius and itself recessed to receive a flat strip of metal one'edge of which is adapted to serve as a die, the recess having its opposite wall inclined inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder, and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face adapted to bear against the die strip and having its opposite face tapered inward and means for securing the clamping block in the recess.
6. In a machine vfor forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its side walls on the plane of a radius and itself recessed and having its opposite wall inclined inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder, a fiat strip of metal having one edge adapted to serve as a die arranged in the recess of said sidewall and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face bearing against the die strip and having its opposite face tapered inward to fit the opposite wall of the recess, and means for securing the clamping block in the recess.
7. In a machine for forming carton blanks, a die carrying cylinder having an opening extending inward from its periphery to form a recess having one of its side Walls itself recessed and having its opposite wall inclined obliquely] inward,1a fiat strip of metal having oneedge adapted to serve as a die arranged in the recess of said'side wall against the wall of, the recess and having a notch inrits Opposite side and a clamping block fitting the recess having one face bearing against the die strip and having a projection fitting the notch in the side of the die and having its opposite face tapered inward to'fit the opposite wall of the. recess, and means for securing the clamping block in the recess.
8. Means for holding a strip of metal comprising a supporting bed member having a recess formed therein with one wall on the plane of a radius of the cylinder and adapted to receive a side face. of the metal strip and having its oppo-' site wall extending inward obliquely to the plane of a radius of the cylinder and a clamping block within the recess having one side held against the opposite side face of the metal strip by the opposite wall of therecess andmeans for securingthe clamping block in the recess.
9. Means for holding a strip of metal having a notch in one side face, comprising a supporting cylinder having a recess formed in its periphery with one wall on the plane of a radius of the cylinder and adapted to receive the side face of the metal strip opposite to the notched face and a clamping block within the recess having one face bearing against the notched face of the strip and provided with a projection adapted to enter the notch, and means for holding the clamping block against the metal strip and for securing it in the recess.' 7 r JOHN GOFFIN.
