Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented Nov, 16 192() application inea may 17, i919. seriarro. 297,881.
To all "t0/tom it may con-cern Be it known that l, JOHN M. Erminia, a citizen of the United States7 residing at Mapleton, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented new and usefulL Improvements in Grain-Car Doors,
car doors of a type used in connection with the sections to the ot' Twhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cars for hauling grain, coal or like inaterial.
One of the objects of the inventionis". to provide a door made up of sections with means for quickly and easily connecting door post ot the car by bolts and pins located in said post.
Another object of the invention is to pro- I vide a supplemental door for the lower part is made over the supe l of the doorway which nlemental door. shown in Letters-Patent combination and arrangement ot the several parts, to be hereinafter fully' described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln describing my invention in detail, reference will be had toA the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which n Figure 1 is a View of my improved door looking from the inside of the car;
wie. 2 is a iront view of the idoor sections; l" 3 is a section on line of Fig. l; f1 is a section on line fit-f o'Fig. 1;
5 is a plan view of the supplemenor in open position.
g means in one edge of the door.
also consists in certainy 6 is a detail view showingl the boltl tion 9. The sections 8 are each pro-l the long end of the door and a like strip 11 is located at the other end of the section. One of these strips is provided with a slot 12 Which entends into yboth ianges thereof and immediately under this slot the section is cut away'to provide a 4recess 13. This slot and recess are to receive the bolt 7 so as to hold this end ofthe section to thev door post The other end of the section is provided with a'hole 14 which passes through the metal strip and this hole is to .receive theV pin 6.
The section is then held in engagement with the pin and bolt by means of the hook 15 carried by the door post and engaging the upper edge of the section. I- may locate a metal strip 16 a suitabledistance from the strip 11 and form a hole 17 in this strip and the section to receive the pin` 6 so as to make thesectionfit diterent Widths of door openings.-
It will, of course, be understood` that when desired, ay number of slots and'holes may be formed in each'sectionl to en age the bolts and pins on the door post.. ach section is provided with an upright 18 vat each end land the bottom of each upright projects' below the bottom ot the section while its upper end is spaced from the top edge of' The supplemental section 9 is composed of a long'strip 19 and a short strip 20, the strips being of such a length'that the short strip will tit between the two posts, while the long strip will overlap said posts. Thusl longitudinal movement of the supplemental door is preventeofl.4 The long strip is formed of a short piece k2,1 and along piece 22 Whifh `are hingedl together by the hinge 23. The
short strip is also formed of along and short piece 24 and 25, the short piece 24 being s ecured yto the long piece 22 While the long piece 25 is secured to the short pie'ceV 21. The twopieces24 and 25 are adapted to yhe secured together 'by the latch means 26. The short strip 20 is of greater width than strip 19 so that said Yshort strip will overlap thesection 8 of the door which has its lower edge `resting on ,the long strip.-
entered the latch is swung away from its keeper so as to free one part of the shortv strip from the other. The pressure of the material within the car will then force the section 22 outwardly and thus move theA entire supplemental door out of the door opening to permit the passage of the material from the Space below the door sections.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with- 1n the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is The combination with a car having a door opening therein and door posts at the side walls of said opening of a door section, metal strips of angle form located on one face of the section adjacent the ends thereof with their flanges engaging the ends, one of said strips having an opening therein and the other strip having a'wide slot in its end flange and a narrow slot in the other flange, said slots beinglconnected together and the section having a recess registering with said slots, a bolt on one post adapted' to engage with the opening, a bolt on the otherI post adapted to engage with the slots and recess and hooks carried by the door post lfor engaging the end of the section which carries the opening for the beam.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
