MINERS LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED IAN. I. 1920.

SAM CASERTO, OF STOLLINGS, WE'ST VIRGINIA.
` MINERS LAMP.
Specication of Letters Patent. i Patented Nov. 16 1920.
Application filed January 7, 1920. Serial No. 349,865.`
To all Lo/tom 2f may concern Be it known that I, SAM CAsnRTo, a sub' ject of the King of Italy, residing at Stollings, in the county of Logan and State of `Wcst Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in miners lamps of the carbid burning type and has for one of its objects the provision of means for receiving and supporting electrical illuminating means, so that said means can be employed for illumination while refilling the lamp with carbid, thereby obviating the necessity of conducting such work in the dark.
Another object Vof the invention is the provision of a miners lamp of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
I'Vith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a miners lamp constructed in accordance with my 1nvention,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the means of securing` the electrical illuminating means to the lamp.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of a casing for supporting the electrical illuminating means and removed from the lamp.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety a miners lamp of the carbid type consisting of the l water chamber 2 and carbid receptacle or chamber 3. The front of the waterv chamber 2 has formed thereon the usual reiector 4 provided with the burner 5. The rear wall of the chamber 2 has secured thereon a hook 6 for attaching the lamp to a miners cap. The water chamber 2 in one side thereof is provided with a recess 7 in which is secured a casing 8 by means of fasteners 9. The casing 8 has a cover 9 hinged thereto as illustrated at 10 and secured to said casing at its free edge by a catch 11 so that said casing can be opened for the purpose of receiving an ordinary electrical Hash light consisting of a battery 12, electric lamp 13 housed by a lens 14 and switch 15. The electrical flash light is of a well known type and the cover 9 is 4provided with a slot to permit the switch button 16 to extend therethrough whereby the circuit to the electric lamp 13 can be opened andclosed from the exterior of the casing. The reflector 4 of the lamp 1 is provided with a cut-out por- .tion in alinement with the recess 7 to receive the lens 14 and carries the partition 17 to prevent the heat from the burner 5 from effecting the electrical flash light within the casing or the lens 14.
F rom the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, it will be noted that means is provided whereby an ordinary electrical flash light can be installed on a carbid Ininers lamp for the purpose of illumination when it is desired to refill the carbid chamber with carbid.
Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the character set forth including a miners lamp of the carbid type having a recess in one side wall, a casing secured within said recess, a hinge cover for said casing, and electrical illuminating means carried by said casing to be used for illumination When. relling Vthe miners lamp with carbid. 7
2. A device of the character set orth including e minerslamp having 'a recessinv one side thereof, a casing secured Within saidrecess, an electrical flash light carried by said casing,'seid minersl'zunp having an opening in its reflector to receive the lens of the electrical flashlight, and a partition dis- 10 Vposed between the burner of the miners Y lenig and electrical flesh light.
