Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 28, 1920. Serial No. 362,101.
I; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to windows and more particularly to a sash extension for windows whereby the windows and sashes therefor may be swung inwardly within a room of a building, so that access may be readily gained to either side of the windows for the purpose of cleaning or repairing the same.
An object of the invention is to provide a sash extension for either stationary or vertically slidable sashes which may be easily and readily applied thereto without any material changes or alterations to the window sash or window casing.
WVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of partsas will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated b similar reference characters throughout t e several views.
The window as herein shown comprises a casing of the usual construction consisting of a sill 1, a top 2 and sides 3 the latter of which are of the usual hollow construction so that the weights 4: may travel therein. Slidably mounted within the window casing is a lower sash 5 and an upper sash 6 each having a pane of glass supported therein. The sides 7 of the sashes 5 and 6 have connected thereto in the usual manner the sash cords 8 and the latter being connected to the weights 4- so as to retain the window sashes in their moved positions. The opposite side members 9 of the window sashes have connected thereto the sash extensions, embodying the present invention, and these sash extensions have connected thereto the.
sash cords 10 and the latter being connected to the weights 4 at this side of the window.
The sash extension as herein shown is preferably made of sheet metal consisting of a stationary memberv 11 which is sub stantially of a U-shaped configuration in cross section and a movable section 12 which is hingedly connected to the stationary section as 13. The medial portion of the stationary section 11 is provided with an inwardly extending projection 14: forming a channel way in which is secured as at 15 one end of the sash'cord 10. These sash extensions are adapted to slide in the usual grooves or guide ways formed within the side member 3 of the window casing. The sides 9 of the window sashes are adapted to rest within the sash extensions and are retained therein by means of the bolts 16. These bolts 16 extend through the side member 17 .of the stationary section 11, through the members 9 of the sashes and the movable section 12 of the sash extension. Each bolt is provided with a winged nut 18 so as to clamp the members 9, 12 and 17 together. When the sash extension is so connected to the sash of the window the latter may be raised and lowered in the usual manner, but when it is desired to gain access to the outer side of the window sash all that is necessary to do is to remove the winged nuts 18 and swing the movable section 12 upon its hinged connection until it assumes a posi-' tion as better illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 4E. The window sash may be then swung inwardly in the direction of the arrow as shown in Fig. 3 thereby presenting the outer side of window sash within the room. WVhile I have shown the sash extension as applied to a vertically movable window it may be also applied to a stationary windew and it may also be made of cast metal, sheet metal or wood as is desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. The combination with'a window casing and a verticallyslidable sash arranged therein, a sash cord connected atone side to said sash, a sash extension slidably mounted within casing and adapted to receive the opposite sideof said sash, a sashcord connected to said sash extension said sash extension comprising a stationary section and a movable section having horizontally extending slots therein, fasteningelements thereof when said sash extension is dis connected, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. sash extension for windows comprising a main section adapted to slide within the window casing, means for connecting a sash cord to said main section, a swinging section comprising a plate hingedly connected to one side of said main section and means for detachably and adjustably connecting said section to the sash of the window.
