TIME-LOCK ATTACHMENT FOR LETTER-BOXES.
Application filed May 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn JURZINA, a citizen of Poland, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T ime-Lock Attachments for Letter- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in look attachments, and has as its principal object the provision of means whereby the insertion of a key to operate the lock is prevented except within definite periods of time which may be regulated to suit conditions.
This and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is a partial front elevational view of a time lock attachment made in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away in order to disclose the construction.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the center of the same.
Fig. 3 is transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a front elevational view showing the device as applied to a letter box.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the operating mechanism of the device.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the rear wall of a lock casing, and 11 the corresponding front wall thereof, the same inclosing a space 12, in which the lock mechanism (not shown) is located.
A clock work mechanism, indicated generally by the numeral 14, is inserted in the front wall 11, so that its dial or face is observable therethrough, and over which operate the hour and. minute hands, respectively 15 and 16. The spindle carrying the hour hand 15 has at its rear end a bevel gear 17, meshing with a bevel pinion 18, fixed upon the end of a horizontal shaft 19, extending centrally through the space 12, and having at its opposite end, another bevel gear 20, meshing with teeth 21, formed upon Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 235,315.
the cylindrical block 22, secured upon a disk which is rotatably mounted in the casing plate 10.
The peripheral edge of the disk 23 is recessed and neatly fitted into said recess is the rectangularly bent edge of a sector shutter which thus is frictionally held by disk 23, while its outer edge is received within an annular groove 26, formed in a ring 27, held in position by an outer ring 28, secured by screws 29 or like fastenings to the rear wall 10. This outer ring bears two series of figures reading from 1 to 12 consecutively upon its frame.
From the foregoing it will be seen that as the hour hand 15 rotates, rotary motion is transmitted to the disk 23, m ving the sector 25, together with the recessed ring 27, in unison with the movement of the hour hand, and obviously it will be actuated as to close the key opening 30 at some portion of the rotation of the sector 25.
A curved rack 32 is secured centrally of the sector 25, and engageable therewith is a pinion 33, mounted on a spindle 34, carried in bearings 35, and provided with an extending knob 36, by which the pinion may be operated, thereby moving the sector within its supports relative to the disk, so that the action of the sector 25 may be adjusted as desired, and close the key opening 30 at any predetermined hour until the action of the clock works shall move the same so as to permit the entrance of a key.
In the adaptation shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, a letter box or like casing 40 is shown to be supported upon a stem a1 mounted on a base 42 and provided with an opening 4A through which letters or like articles may be entered, this opening being normally covered by a shutter 45, to prevent the entrance of rain, snow or the like.
A door 47 is secured to the casing 4=O by hinges 48 so that the contents of the box may be removed, this door being secured in position in the casing by a lock mechanism shown conventionally in Fig. 4E and described below having a key opening to which entrance may be prevented by the sector 25 in the manner indicated. The lock is represented by a slidable bar 50 having an upturned end 51 adapted to be engaged by the key inserted through the hole 30. A niche or groove 52 is cut into the frame of the box,
in which the other end of said bar is adapted to slide so as to engage said frame, thus locking the box.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an effective device has been disclosed, whereby the entrance of a key to a lock at certain fixed hours may be prevented, and that the same may be set so as to operate at any desired time.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a time lock attachment, the combination with a circular casing arranged adjacent to the lock, said casing containing an opening through which a key may be entered, a sector plate rotatably mounted in said casing, and a clockwork, of a shaft 0perated by said clockwork, means actuated by said shaft for rotating said sector plate, a rack on said sector plate, a gear engaging with said rack, and means for operating said gear whereby said sector plate may be turned independently of the movement imparted by said clockwork.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature. 7
JOSEPH J URZINA.
