WILLIAM fr. OOLLINS, OE WINOHESTEE, ILLINOIS.
.IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,890, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. COLLINS, of Winchester, in the county of Scott and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Letter A of the drawing indicates a longitudinalv vertical sectional view ,of my inven tion. Letter B indicates a top view. Letter C indicates a side view.
The mode of constructing my device is as follows: The slideb should be so fastened as to Slide in openings c oneaoh side of opening d of plate a, and extend above so far that in no event they will pass under the drop e of slide j", and extend below so far that in every event they will receive the end of the link. g in the act o f coupling the cars, and being driven to the back -end of the openings c will thereby press back the slidef, so as to enable the pin z to so fall through the link and boxing as to couple the cars; and being arrested by the back end of openings c, the plate a yielding upward on pivots y, the slides b will jump the end and fall on the inside. of the link g, ready,
upon the withdrawal of the link, to repeat,
upon coupling the cars, the saine operation. The office of the spring k' is to throw the slide f back under the ,pin a upon the same being withdrawn or the cars being uncoupled. With Slides b, constructed so as to operate as above, and attached, the plate t should be hung on pivots y in grooves x to the front ot' the pin-hole h, at a distancevfrom the bottom of the device of about one-fourth less than the thickness of the link used, the pivots y yielding in grooves w, so as to accommodate the plate a to the thickness of the link. The springw should be so constructed as to fall within itself, and be fastened to the top of the device around the pin-hole h, the widest end thereof resting and pressing upon plate a, so as to hold the link g, when coupled, in a horizontal position.
That I claim as Iny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a bunter having vertical grooves w, of the sliding catches b, the slide f, iiange e, springs la andw, and the tilting-plate a pivoted in slot y, to have vertical as well as pivotal motions, substantially as Specified. s l WILLIAM T. COLLINS.
