Z 10 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN DOLAN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rail-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved track rail fastening and has one of its principal objects to provide a device of this character whereby the rails of a railway track may, without the necessity for any special structural features in the 'track ties or the use of ordinary spikes, be readily secured to the ties.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which will be particularly adapted for use in connection with cement ties but which may also be readily employed in connection with wooden ties.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a device which will securely and firmly engage a track rail and wherein adjustment will be provided whereby the rail may be firmly clamped in position.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.

InL order to facilitate an, accurate understanding of the present invention, I shall describe the device in connection with a tie 10 and rail 11 of conventional design. In carrying the invention into effect, 1 employ a top tie plate 12 which is seated against the upper face of the tie to extend transversely thereof and arranged beneath the tie is a similar tie plate 13, these plates overhanging the tie at its side edges. Rested upon the top plate are companion clamping plates 14 formed to snugly fit around the base flange of the rail extending therebeneath to closely confront each other. As will be observed upon .reference to Fig. 1, the clamping plates are of a length substantially equal to the length of the plates 12 and 13 while the top flanges 15 of said plates termi- Specication of Letters Patent.

nate short of the ends thereof. Seated upon the bottom flanges of the clamping plates beneath the rail is a cushioning block 1G. rfhis block may be of wood or other approved material and is designed to yieldably support the rail so that the major portion of the stress set up by the passage of rolling stock over the rail will be absorbed by the block and thus interrupted between the rail and tie. Engaged through the bottom lianges of the clamping plates at the respective ends thereof are pairs of clamping bolts 17 which extend through the top and bottom plates 12 and 13 at opposite sides of the tie. Said flanges and the plates are pro vided with slots freely receiving the bolts so that the bolts may be readily adjusted to compensate fol` ties of different widths and, as will be at once appreciated, said bolts will serve to clamp all the plates firmly upon the tie so that the clamping plates 14 will be anchored for rigidly holding the rail. Further, the bolts will coact with the opposite sides of the tie for preventing shifting of the plates transversely of the tie while tht nuts at the upper ends of the bolts will con front the end edges of the cushioning block 16 for preventing longitudinal shifting of said block. An especially secure and rigid fastening for the rail is thus provided while, at the same time,the use of the ordinary rail spikes is eliminated. Consequently, the present device will prove particularly desirable for use in connection with cement ties, it being observed that no special struc tural features will be required in the tie in order that the device may be used thereon. However, as will also be appreciated, the device may be readily employed in connection with wooden ties. By inserting the clamping bolts 17 rst through the bottom plate 13 and then through the top plate 12, the bolts may be assembled upon the bottom plate and this plate laid beneath .the tie at the time the tie is laid in place,when the top plate 12, clamping plates 14 and cushioning block 16 may then be assembled beneath the track rail upon the top of the tie at the time the rail is laid. This done, it is simply necessary to apply the nuts to the clamping bolts and properly adjust said nuts for binding the device in engagement with the tie and binding the rail thereto, it being also, of course, possible by adjustment of said nuts, to take up any looseness which may later occur.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
l. A rail fastening including top and bottom tie plates, rail clamping plates seated upon the top tie plate, a rail cushioning block extending Within the rail clamping plates, and clamping means connecting all 0f said plates, said means confronting the ends of the cushioning block for holding the block against longitudinal displacement.
2. A rail fastening including top and bottom Vtie plates, clamping platesy formed to lit the base flange of a rail and extending therebeneath', said clamping plates being seated upon the top tie plate, and clamping meansl connecting all Vof said plates.

4.
