To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY W. SCHWARZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mart, in the lcounty of McLennan, State of Texas, have invented certain new and use ful improvements in Curtains for Vehicles; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to curtains for vehicles, and more particularly to the class of side roll curtains forfoldable automobile tops or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of roll curtain of this character, and a mounting therefor, which will permit of ready raising and lowering of the curtain; and which will permit also the disposition of the curtain when rolled, in such a way as to present no interference with the folding of the vehicle top.
A further object of the invention is the a curtain of this character, wherein the roller is adjustable to fit various sizes of curtains in accordance with the requirement thereof for the vehicle top, and
also to permit its engagement in or disengagement from supporting brackets.
l/Vith these and other objectsin view, the invention consists in the features of con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in ldetail A designates generally the side roll curtain, preferably made as usual from flexible water proof material and formed at its upper end witha casing 10 in which is received a roller including the sections 11 and 12 slidably connected with each other,
the section 11 being telescoped within theV section 12 and in the section 11is contained the usual winding spring for eecting the automatic winding of the curtain A upon the roller when said curtain is raised. The adjustability of the sections 11 and 12 of the curtain roller permits the lengthening and shortening thereof in accordance with the width of the curtain hung thereon and also provides for engagement of the roller in its support, and for disengagement therefrom, as will be later set forth. Extending longitudinally of the roller outside of the casing 10 is a pair of retaining strips vertical longitudinal sectional 13 which at their inner ends lap within an eye 111 formed on the Vsection 12 of said roller and said eye projecting through an opening or slot 10 in the casing 10, while the outer ends of these strips 13 are fastened to the sections 11 and 12 near the ends thereof through the medium of screw fastenere 15 `and inV this manner thecurtain A is prevented from twisting on the roller.
Adjustably secured on the vertical arms 16 of the bows of the topat opposite ends of the roller are substantially' Lshaped brackets 17, each being formed with a central opening to receive a stud 18 on each arm 16 while embracing the arm is a substantially U-shaped cleat 19 which has its ends detachablyV fastened to the brackets 17 which is formed with'opposed openings 2O on opposite sides of the center opening for the stud 18 Vfor receiving the ends of the cleat i9 and in this manner the bracket l? can be adjusted on the arm When the occasion requires that the bracket be turned in different positions in the mounting of the curtain.

Mounted onV therod 22 near opposite side edOes of thecurtain n, are latch casings 23 having notches 24; for receiving the shanks of the stationary buttons 25 mounted on the body of the vehicle and Within these casings are heldA spring pressed latch. bolts 26 which are moved to i retracted position through the.V medium of finger levers 27 pirotedV in the casings '23, the latter being also formed With linger engaging extensions 28 to enable the convenient gripping of the lever 27 when it is desired to release the bolts V26 to free the latch casing 23 from engagement with the keeper buttons .25 When` the curtain is lowered orextended to permit the automatic Winding thereof upon` the roller under the action of the spring therein.

lt is obvious that the engagement of the roller trunnions inthe brackets and `their disengagement therefrom, necessitates lengthening or shortening Y of the roller, as the case may be;l and it will be seen that'this is permitted by the telescopic connection of the roller sections. As shown in F ig. l, the opening l0 is somewhat longer than the eye lll longitudinally of the roller, so that When the roller isv shortened, the curtain is free to buckle at this point, this structure thus preventing interference of the curtain with the shortening of the roller. Y
lVounted on the inner face of the curtain parallel with but spaced from the opposite side edges are strips 30, each being free at one edge and has mounted at intervals thereon hooks 3l While above the series'of hooks and carried by the strips is a lacing cord 32 which is adapted to engage the hooks 3l on adjacent curtains for fastening the same together at their meeting edges.

The rod 22 is formed in sections and the section 22 has telescoped therein the other section of said rod to permit adjustment thereof While the fastener 22 secures the sections of said rod in their adjusted relation to each other.
