. can-cert.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application filed. April 16, 1920. Serial No. 374,362.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. STREIB, a citizen of the United States, residing in Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ore-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway dump cars and more particularly to that type of dump car in which the sides are provided with outwardly swinging doors.
An object of the invention is to provide a dump car of this type, which for a given capacity, will have the maximum width within the clearance limits allowed, and yet permit of the application of the door hinges and hinge butts without increasing the overall dimensions of the car.
Another object of the invention is to provide the side walls and side doors of a railway dump car at their adjacent edges with novel strengthening means.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1, is a side elevational view of a portion of a dump car embodying the invention and Fig. 2, is a cross-sectional view of the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 1, indicates the body of the car which comprises side walls 2, end walls 3, and any suitable underframe construction (not shown). Each of the side walls 2, comprises a stationary upper plate 4, and an outwardly swinging lower plate or door 5. The plate 4 extends for substantially the full length of the car and is provided with an ordinary coping member 7 which is secured to the upper edge portion of the plate 4 in such a manner that the horizontal flange 6 thereof extends inwardly towardthe longitudinal center line of the car. The lower portion of the plate 4 is provided with a flange 8 which extends inwardly toward the longitudinal center line of the car and is preferably sloped downwardly. To strengthen and stiffen the plate 4 an angular member 9 is provided the flange 10 of which is secured to the flange 8 of the plate 4, and the flange 11 of this member is disposed downwardly and outwardly at substantially right angles to the flange 8 of the plate 4. The door 5 may extend longitudinally for the full length of the car and comprises a plate 12, the upper portion of which is provided with a flange 13 which extends inwardly toward the longitudinal center line of the car and is preferably sloped upwardly. To strengthen and stiffen the flange 13, an angular member 14 is provided, the flange 15 of which is secured to the flange 13 of the plate 12, and the flange 16 of this member is disposed upwardly and outwardly at substantially right angles to the flange 13. The lower portion of the door is provided-with an angular member 17 or any other suitable stiffening member. This portion of the door is adapted to engage the lower portion of a sloping floor 18 to form a seal adapted to prevent lading from accidentally falling from the car.
To the flanges 10 and 11 of the angular member 9, hinge butts 19 are secured, such hinge butts being provided with pins 20 to which hinge straps 21 are pivotally connected, the lower portions of said hinge straps being secured to the flanges 15 and 16 of the angular member 14 which is secured to the door 5. r
The car may be strengthened and stiffened throughout its length by means of transverse members 22 one of which is shown in maximum width within the clearance limits allowed and yet permit of the application of the door hinges and hinge butts without increasing the overall width of the car.
I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction of the parts hereinbefore described as it will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that many minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the appended claim. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a dump car, a sidewall comprising a stationary part and a movable part, an inwardly extending flange on each of said parts, an angular member secured to each of said flanges, a hinge butt secured to the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature angular member which is secured to the ste- 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
tionary part of said WELH and a hinge strap JOHN F STREIB secured to the angular member which is se 7 V 1 -V v cured to the movable part of said Well, said Witnesses: members and said hinge being Wholly With- EDYTH LAMB,
in the outside lines of the side of said car. E. S. UTZLER.
