UNITED STATES MICHAEL I-IOILO, F CLIFTO HEIGHTS, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application filed May 10, 1918. Serial No. 233,681.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL Horno, a subject of the Emperor of Austria at Clifton Heights, county of lelaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements of household furniture and particularly to beds of the folding type. Y,
@ne object of the invention is to provide a bed which may be folded, so that it appears like a cabinet, wardrobe, or the like, or which may be extended when required for use in a convenient manner, thereby affording a commodious bed.
A further object is to provide a folding bed, composed of few and simple parts, which are easily operated with the expenditure of a minimum of energy, and which, when extended, are firmly held and prevented from premature collapse.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a bed made in accordancewith the invention, parts being broken away in order to show the construction.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is another side elevation, showing the parts in the folded position, the side casing being removed.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the bed when in a closed position. Y
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmental view of stress rod, and
Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary side view, showing the means by which the bed is secured in its extended position.
The head of the bed is composed of two vertical columns 10, having secured at their rear a wall 11, and attached by the hinges 12, are the side casings 14, shown in Fig. 2 in a partially open position.
`Rigidly engaged with the columns 10, at the proper height from the floor are short beams 15, the outer ends of which are residing l* connected by the usual form of slip joint 16, to the next sections 17 of the beams, the outer ends of which are provided with feet 18 which extend of the bottoms of the columns 10.
Eyes 19 are secured on the inner sides of the feet 18 receptive of the downturned ends of a rod 20 by means of which the beams are held in a rigidly spaced position.`
The upper corners of the feet 18 are rounded or curved, and alsothe corresponding ends of the beam sections 17, the latter being recessed to receive the tenons 21 of the next sections 22, of the beams, the same being secured pivotallyy by pins 23, in the manner of a hinge.
The outer ends of the beam sections '22, are engaged by joints 24, in all respects similar to the joints 16, with the final sections 25 of the beams, the sectionsy 24 being rigidly engaged with the foot board 26, which extends upward, and when the bed is in a folded position, forms a cover for the structure.
On this foot board 26, pivoted byI the pins 27, are foot supports 28, shown in an extended position in Fig. 1, and in a folded position in Fig. 4, clips 29 being provided to hold the supports when folded.
Secured at the head of the bed, above the beam 15, is a raised rail 30, cooperative with a similar rail 31 fixed on the rearbeams 25, the rails and 31 having affixed on their sides a plurality of eyes 33, in which are engaged the ends of tension springs 34, their opposite ends being hook shaped and engaged with wire rods 35.
Adjacent to the ends of the springs 34, are rods 38, while engaged with the rods 35 and 38, are the interwoven wires 39 which constitute a spring mattress, the same being formed in the usual manner.
Extending near the inner sides of the beams, between the rails 30 and 31, is a frame comprised of side elements 40, connected by hinge joints 42, with the head sections 41, in which is pivoted the ends of a transverse bar 44, having secured at its center a longitudinal bar 58 extending to the foot of the bed and having engaged in its opposite vtubular end, a stem 60 slidable in bar`58 and pivoted in 'llie bar 31 by the T shaped connection 6l. head sections 41 of the frame, has fixed upon down to the ioor or level e transverse bar 44, journaled in the interior of the cabinet.
one end a disk 45, having a plurality of ratchetteeth 46 formed in its periphery, engageable with ,which is a pawl 48, pressed normally downward by means yof the spring 49, secured by a screw 50 to the trame section 41, the pawl being pivoted upon the side of the bar on a pin 51.
Also pivoted on the bar 40, by the pin 52, is a lever 53 having a downwardly extending operating handle 54 at oneend, Vwhile the' bent end 55 is arranged to engage with the lower side of the pawl 48, so that the saine can be raisedwhen the handle 54 is operated, a stop pin 56 being provided so as to maintain the lever in an operative position.
, In operation, the bed being extended in the position shown in Fig. l and. it is desired to told the same, the lever 53 is moved toward the front of the bed, releasing the pawl vfrom engagement .with the teeth oi' the disk 45, permitting the bar 44 to be rotated upon raising the rear or toot end of the bed into the position shown in Fig. 3, the rear element of the bed trame, folding along'the axial joint while the mattress on account of its resiliency accommodates itselr1 tothe A casing or covering may be supplied to the bottom ot the bed along the elements 22, while the element 26, acts as a cover for the structure.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a foldingbed, the combination with a hollow cabinet and a sectional trame hingedly engaged at one end within said cabinet,
a T shaped element pivoted in the foot end 1 of said frame, a telescopic tube in which said element is slidably received, a shaft transversely mounted in the tiXed portion of said frame, rigid connections between said shatt and said tube, a ratchet fixed upon said shaft, a spring impelled pawl pivoted to the head section of said trame, and engageable with the teeth of said ratchet, and a lever by which shaft, a spring pressed pawl engageable with the teeth of said ratchet, and a lever for operating said pawl, whereby said movable section may be held extended.
. In testimony whereof I have aiixed my signature.
MIKE HOILO.
