WILLIAM s. GRIMSHAW, or PITTSFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEEL-FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,800, dated February 11, 1873.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Gam- SHAW, of Pittsfield, Pike county and-State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful machine for adjusting, regulating, and holding an ordinary plow of any pattern when in use, the whole being ordinarily designated by the general name of Sulky-Plow; and I do here-. by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the whole machine. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stationary framefixed to the axle-tree, to which is attached the tongue, the drivers seat, and the hand-lever, with its accompanying arrangements for raising the plow. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the movable frame to which the plow is attached, and the foot-lever for lowering or depressing the plow-beam by the pressure of the foot.
In the following description the same letters refer to the same parts in the different figures.
A A are the wheels running on the axle tree B. To this axle-tree is firmly fastened the stationary frame F F. To this frame is fastened the tongue G, which also supports the driverls seat. A second and separate frame, D D, is attached tothe axle-tree by the hinges a a. In the forward end of this frame is placed the rock-shaft E, which rolls or plays in said frame. To this rock-shaft the plow-beam is fastened by ordinary iron clips, and also by means of the adjustable iron rod I, bolted or otherwise fastened to the said rock-shaft E at the proper distance from the plowbeam (say, perhaps, twelve inches.) Said rod 1? is also attached by its other end to the side or top of the plow-beam at 0, near the upright post of the plow. It passes through a staple or other similar device on the plow-beam, and being provided with a screw out upon it, it may be adjusted at any required length. Standing at an angle to the plow-beam this rod P serves not only as a brace or guide to steady the plow but may be adjusted to assist in regulatingthe size of the furrow. The plow is drawn by hitching the team to an ordinary clevis on the end of the plow-beam.
A hand-lever, H, is hinged to the frame F I, and connected by a chain with the rocking lever 11 H, also hinged to the said frame, and this rocking-lever is again attached by another short chain to the plow-beam over the plow. By means of this hand-lever H the the plow is raised at will. 7
To lower or depress the plow I provide the foot-lever K hinged to the axle-tree, and so shaped that it falls upon the cross-piece of the frame DD,while'a't the same time its forward end is convenient to the foot. When pressed upon by the foot it pushes down the frame D D containing the rock-shaft E, to which the end of the plow-beam is fastened, thus making it easy to lower the plow-beam at any instant when inequalities of ground require it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
"1. The combination of the movable frame D D with the axle-tree B, said frame having the rock-shaft E, to which the plow-beam is fastened, substantially as described.
2. The rod P attached to the rock-shaft E and the plow-beam, and acting as an adj usta ble brace and guide to the plow.
3. The foot-lever K, in its combination with the axle-tree B and the frame D D, acting as a convenient and efficient device for lowering the plow. p
4. The. combination of the movable frame D D, the rod 1?, and the foot-lever K acting together, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
WILLIAM S. GRIM'SHAW.
