Be it known that we, CHARLES M. KOLBEN- sriir'rnn and CHARLES W7. STAUFIIGER, citition for demountable wheels and its Object' is toprovide simple and efficient liiieans for .detachably and deinountably securing the wheel in place, whereby it is firmly held against movement relative to an inner hub member yand lockedin place against any possibility of accidental displacement, and further, whereby the demountable member is forced to place upon the inner member by the securing means and forcibly disconnected therefrom by the operation of the securing means in operating the same to detach the wheel. A further object is to provide a construction whereby many of the parts may be formed of sheet metal stampings, thus insuring accuracy, cheapness, strength and durability, and to provide certain other new and useful features in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described.`
Viith these and other ends in view, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth4 and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference beinfr had to the accompanying drawings, in whicth Figure l is illustrativeof a hub construction embodying the invention, in which a demountable or outer member of the hub is shown in longitudinal vertical section, and any inner or fixed member, in side elevation;

rEhe' construction show in Figs. l and 2, is particularly vadapted to' ,wirev wheels but it will .be understood that by slight "changes, the saine may be applied to wheels having wooden spokes, or the artillery `type of wheel, and further, the construction disclosed in igs. 9 and l0 may be modied to adapt the saine for use on wire wheels instead Of the'artillery type, as shown. Obviously, changes may be made in the size, proportion, arrangement and construction of parts without departing'from the spirit of the invention, and all within the scope of the appended claims.
As shown in Fig. l, 1 indicates the Vcylindrical or supporting `portion of an inner member of the wheel vhub which member is adapted to be attached to an axle shaft or to turn upon an axle skein in the usual manner of applying the drivingor the front wheels to a motor vehicle, said member being designed to remain in place upon the axle when the outer or demountable sleeve 2*of the hub preferably formed of sheet metal has a cylindrical end portion to fit closely-over the outer end of the sleeve 2 and project beyond the end thereof, seid shell being secured by rivets or otherwise, to the flange i near its outer edge, said members thus forming a hollow body or outer hub to which the spokes 7 are'secured by passing the same Patented Nov.` 9, 1920. i Application le'd December 13,1917;` Serial No. 206,898. i
through holes provided therefor inthe `projecting end portion 6 and in aflange 8 on the shell turned inwardly over the periphery of the flange 4. Y
Thel outer end of the inner or fixed hub is reduced in diameter as at 9 and this reduced end portion is formed with radial lugs 10 at opposite sides thereof for the engagement therewith of ribs or inwardly bent portions 11 upon a locking cap 12, the cap being of a diameter to lit loosely within the projecting end portion 6 of the shell and the portions 11 which lie at opposite sides of the cap, being formed by cutting or severing the metal of the rim of the cap lat a distance from its edge and along a line extending at an inclination to said edge, and then bend- ,ing inwardly the portions thus partially severed from the cap. These inbent portions thus form internal ribs each having a sharply defined side edge 13 which is inclined to the plane of rotation of the cap, to engage behind the lugs 10 when the cap is slipped upon the end portion 9 and ro-v tated;` the lugs being also formed with inner `sides likewise inclined so that the cap will Y be moved endwisef and by the engagement v of its inner rim or edge with the outer ends of the sleeve 2, force the entire outer or demountable hub into placeand lock it upon the inner member or hub. A reverse turning movement of the cap brings those portions 11 of the capout oi alinement with the lugs Aand by providing a cam projection 14 on the shoulder 15 formed by the reduced end 9 on the inner hub member, and also providing aV lug 16on the interior oit' the cap, properly positioned relative to the in- Aclines 13 thereon, when the cap is turned to release the wheel, this lug 16 will come into contact with the cam projection 14 after the cap has been turned backwardly, or counterclockwise a short distance and force the cap longitudinally outward or away from the shoulder 15,which movement of the cap will move the outer or demountable hub longitudinally upon the inner member or cylindrical portion 1, due to 'the fact lthat said cap isv attached to or held within the outer projecting end portion 6 of the shell 5 by a retaining ring 17 having screw threaded-engagement with said end `portion and being provided with an inwardly extending Harige 18 to engage the cap and prevent its withdrawal from the shell. The cap may however be turned within the ring by means of a suitable tool or wrench (not shown) applied to an angularly shaped end portion 19 on the cap which projects through `and beyond the ring, but this turning movement is preferably -limited by providing a lug 45 projecting from the'end edge' of the cap to engage an elongated notch 46 cut in the end of the wall of the tubular portion 2 of the demountable hub.

like manner, thus providing a tapered seat for the key, which when the demountable 'member is forced longitudinally upon the inner member, will seat firmly inthe keyway 24 and obviate any possibility of relao -tive turning between 'the inner and outer h ub members. -The tapered key also providesfor wear of the parts and when the demountable member is released by the lbackward turning ofthe locking -cap 12,V
will readilyrelease itself from its seat, thus insuring the ready removal j of the demoun'table wheel. y f
A very strong, cheap and durable coning cap- 12 with the locking portions 11 struck out from the body which is lformed of sheet metal, and a minimum number of Iparts is required, the cap performing the "struction is provided by forming the lockdouble function of a cap to close the outer parts together. f In the modified construction shown in Figs. 9 and-10, the inner or xed member comprises a body or barrel having in inner cylindrical portion 25and an outer end portion 26 of lesserdiameter with a channel or groove 27 in the body between the two lportions, the outer side wall 28 of said groove being inclined. At the inner end of the por-` g tion 25 is a flange 29 to oppose a ring plate 30, between which and a flange 31 on the sleeve 32, are secured the spokes 33 of the demountable wheel. The sleeve 32 fits upon the portion 25 of the inner hub or body and this portion is formed with a tapering slot or groove 34 to receive a rib or key 35 on the sleeve 32.
The outer or demountable hub is secured upon the inner hub or barrel with thel key 35 firmly seated in its groove 34, by means of two wedge members 36 slidable within grooves 37 formed radially of the aXis of rotation oi' the lwheel within the outer face of the `flange 31 and the inner face of the iange 38 of a rotatable locking cap 39 iormed to lit loosely over the outer end portion 2G of the inner barrel and preferably made hexagonal in crosssection or with facets so that a wrench may be applied thereto for turning the same. A recessed retaining ring 40 is secured near its periphery against the outer face of the flange 31 by means 01"' bolts 41 which also serve to secure said flange and plate 30 together with the spokes between them. The inner portion of the retaining ring 40 is offset or recessed to receive the flange 38 of the cap and to overlie the same to form a centering guide therefor and retain the same in place upon the demountable or outer hub at the same time permitting of free rotation of the locking cap. The wedge members or dogs 36 are tapered at the inner ends to engage the tapered or slanting side 28 of the groove 27 and these dogs are moved radially into and out of said groove by means of a pin 42 secured to each dog and provided with a head to engage slots 43 in the flange 38 oi" the locking cap, said slots being formed eccentric to the axis of rotation of said cap so that when said cap is rotated in one direction, the slots, by reason of such eccentricity, will torce the pins and hence the dogs, to move radially outward as the flange of the caps in which the slots are formed, is turned relative to the pins. This movement lifts the dogs out of the groove 27, thus releasing the outer hub so that the wheel may be dismounted from the inner or fixed hub.
A reverse rotation of the locking cap will in a like manner force the dogs or wedges inwardly and by the engagement of their inner beveled ends with the inclined side of the groove, move the demountable wheel longitudinally inward upon the inner hub to irmly seat the key 35 in its groove 34 and securely lock the inner and outer hubs t0- gether against relative turning in either direction. v
To form a finish for the hub and inclose all of the movable parts, making the hub dust and oil tight, an outer shell or cap 44, formed of thin sheet metal is shaped to fit upon the hexagonal portion 39 of the locking cap and extend outwardly with its rim litting snugly over the outer edge of the retaining ring 40.
i By-the simple application of a wrench to the faceted portion ,of the shell 44 and the turning of the retaining or locking cap 39 thereby, the wheel may be very quickly and easily unlocked and demounted from the inner or fixed hub, thus greatly facilitating the work of changing wheels.

2. 1n combination an inner hub member, an outer demountable member adapted for telescopic and nonrotative relation therewith, the outer end of the inner hub member being reduced providing a shoulder, radial lugs on opposite sides of the outer end of the inner hub member, a locking cap insertible within the end of the outer hub member and over the reduced end of the hub member, means preventing withdrawal of the cap member from the outer hub member, the cap member being provided with portions engaging the said lugs, a .cam projection on the said shoulder of the inner hub member, means on the cap member to engage the same, turning or the cap member in one direction causing engagement with the said lu's and drawing the inner hub member within the outer hub member andV reverse rotation to position with the portions of the cap member out of alinement with the lugs bringing a portion of the cap member into engagement with the cam projection to draw the outer hub member from the innerhub member. i
