KARL HJALMAB LILI-IELM VON EPGELAT, OF ESTGGKHOLM. SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR' TO IVIO'IALA "i/ERKSTADQ NEAL AKTIEBQLAG, 0F MUTALA WEEKS-TAD, SWEDEN,
A CORPORATION.
FEEDING DEVICE FOR PULVEROUS IN FURNACES FOR LQCOMGTIVES AND THE original application filed October 12. 191 ,-eria1 No. 125,223.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that 1, 1mm h'JALMAn VIL- rrnLM voN Pona'r, subject of the King of iv l r 'l' Q lll 9 l i at on, iesicing at tJtOL/IIO in, lwecen, have invented certain new and useful Imilk'fldlfiilltillts in Feeding Devices for Potion T 'n ous duel 1n eurnaces for Locomotlves and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to such feeding devices for pulverous fuel in fur naces, where the powder is fed from a powder receptacle to the furnaces by means of a gaseous medium, which whirls up and brings along with it a quantity of fuel to the furnace through a powder pipe or 0011- duit, extending between the receptacle and the furnace.
The invention consists in. certain improvements in the adjacent ends of the powder conduit and the gas or air supply pipe.
"the in i-Lion essen ially characteriand by the fact, that at the same time as the fuel transporting air current or currents is prevented from ilowingin a straight line into the fuel. outleta member for covering ill outlet oi said air supply pipe mo;- able in relation to the discharge end of said pipe in such a way, that by adjusting one of them the outlet oi. the air supply pipe can be covered or uncovered to any desired degree or wholly covered by said member. The said member forms preferably a part of the fuel pipe.
Bin embodiment of the invention is i.llus trated in the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of a tender for pulverous fuel. with a feeding device according to the present invention. 2 shows on a larger scale the device in the position for interrupted feed and Fig. 3-3 the same in the position for full feed. Only the lower part of the receptacle and the adjacent ends of the fuel and air pipes located in said receptacle part are shownin Figs. 2 and 3.
In the embodiment shown the air current necessary for the feed is effected by means of pressure air supplied through the conduit 9.
That part of the fuel pipe 1 which is located in the powder receptacle 20 consists Eatontecl Nov. 2, 1920.
Divided and this application filed June 3,
Serial No. 301,546.
of a metal pipe 2, which extends near and along the one of the two inclined and downwardly converging walls 21 of the receptools 20. The discharge end of the air supply conduit 9, which is supplied with compressed air, is indicated by d. This discharge end or pipe projects into the receptacle from below and opposite the receiving opening of the fuel pipe, which opening forms the fuel outlet of the receptacle.
The pipe 2 is rotatably mounted in the receptacle in bearings 22, so that it can be rotated around its own longitudinal axis by means of a handwheel 27 or the like, arranged on the outside of the receptacle.
l-liccording to the embodiment shown the receptacle is arranged on a tender of a locomotive, and in such a way, that the handle of the pipe 2 is conveniently accessible from the drivers cabin.
The lower edge of the pipe lies in a plane, which forms an inclined angle to the longitudinal axis of the pipe, so that the lower end of the pipe forms a tongue, or projection, which overlaps the pipe l on one side. -The pipe 4:, which tapers conically toward its free end, is provided on the upper side with a plurality of line holes 5.
Although the holes 5 thus are arranged laterally on the pipe 4 they are faced upward by reason of the tube 4 having an inclined position.
.iccording as the nipe 2 is rotated to the one or other position the holes 5 are covered or uncovered to any desired. degree by the lower end or projection of the pipe 2. In the position shown in Fig. 2 the holes 5 are wholly covered by the end of the fuel pipe 2, and. in the position shown in Fig. 8 the holes are wholly uncovered by the pipe 2. The former position is the position for entirely interrupted feed, and the latter position is the position for full feed.
Referring to F 23 it will be understood, that by supplying pressure air through the conduit 9 air will flow out into and pene- 'ate the powder mass in the receptacle uan ty of the powder mass will be whirled up thereby partly on account o the pressure in 4 and partly on account oi h the holes 5, so that the adjacent ing an air current or currents from of the draft in the furnace will be forced or brought along with the air through the fuel conduit to the furnace. The pipe & has a. central opening 8 at the point through which air is blown directly into the fuel pipe, whereby thc blowing of the whirled up powder to the furnace through the fuel pipe ,is highly supported. On account thereof that the fuel transporting and whirling up air currents flowing out from the holes of pipe l are prevented from flowing in a straight line into the fuel .pipe, the powder will be effectively whirled up and intimately miXcdwith air before escaping into the fuel pipe.
On account tllGPGOI that fuel pipe extends upwardly from its receiving end powder 1S prevented from falling by gravity into the fuel pipe. Thus no powder but that whirled up by the air currents from 5 can escape to the furnace.
According to the embodiment shown the powder feed is regulated by the angular adjustment of the pipe 2 without displac ing said pipe endwise.
It is evident that the construction can be modified in such a way, that the'pipe 4: instead of pipe 2 made rotatable or both pipes can be'angularly adjustable.
The pipe may in both cases lead directly from the atmosphere and the feed be effected'only by means of suction into the powder pipe.
