Be it known that I, JAMES RoBE'R'r'BRowN, a citizen of the i United States, residing at Halls, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Tennesseeghave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Demountable Rims;
wheels, and the primary object thereof is to provide an improved nm and cooperating wheel structure that admits of the rim being readily and quickly detached from the wheel without the use of special tools, to the end that rapid changes of tires may be made by motorists on the road.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved demountable rim in which an improved locking device is employed for holding the rim on the .wheel body, and which admits of easy operation to free the rim when occasion demands.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding. parts in the several views:
Figure '1 shows an elevational view, with parts in section, of an improved wheel constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown in one position.

Referring more particulary to the drawings, 1 designates the hub, from which radiate the spokes 2, and 3 represents the wooden fell carried on the outer ends of the spokes 2 On the felly, I preferably of meta view taken on the rovide a an band 4, I: in which are produced a plurality of circumferentially extending slots 5 provided in connection with transverse slots 6 that open through one side of the felly band 4 and communicate with the slots 5 at one end thereof. The two slots 5 and 6 together form a bayonet-like slot. The felly band 4 is further provided with an elongated slot 7 which registers with a similar slot 8 in the felly 3 for the purpose of re ceiving the valve stem of the tire as further referred to.
A portion of the felly 3 iscut away as indicated at 9 in Fig. 3, to rovide a recess in which is seated the shan 10 of a locking dog 11, which latter projects out through a slot 12 in the felly band 4. A bolt or pin 13 passes through the felly band 4 and loosely engages the shank 10, so as to provide a pivot on which the dog 11 may move radially;
A coil spring 14 is arranged in a socket 15 beneath the dog 11 and acts to yieldingly hold the dog in the rojected position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, wiiile allowlng the dog 11 to be depressed as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of allowing the demountable rim to move into and out of the locked position on the wheel. A stem or rod 16 is connected to the dog 11, passes through the convolutions of the spring 15 and through the folly 3, and provides an elongated handle which maybe grasped to draw the dog 11 inwardly. As best shown in Fig. 4, the outer edge of the dog 11 is'formed with a semicylindrical depression. 17, which corresponds substantially to the form of a locking stud 18 carried on the interior of the demountable rim 19.
The rim 19 isv further provided with a series of bosses 20 extending radially inward from substantially the central portion of the rim, and these bosses are provided to engage through the slots 6 and 5 in the felly band 4, asindicated in Figs. 1 and 2. A perforation 21 in the demountable rim 19 is provided to admit the valve stem which asses through the slots 7 and 8, respectively, in the felly band 4 and felly 3, the slots being elongated to allow of the movement of the valve stem when the demountable rim 19 is rotated on the felly band as required toshift the bosses 20 into the closed ends of the slots 5. In this latter condition the parts are shown in F i .2. Referring to Fig. 6, the demountable rim 19 is provided with a fixed flange 22 ad a removable flange 23 which is a split ring,
the divided ends of which are indicated at 24 in Fig. 5. This removable flange 23 is formed with an inner shoulder 25 having an outwardly beveled outer face 26 adapted to come in contact with a correspondingly formed beveled face 27 provided in a socket 28 at the side of the demountable rim 19. The effect of this arrangement is to allow of the springing of the open ends 24 of the flange 23 apart to permit ready removal of the flange and quick application of the flange to the rim 19; and without the use of any locked parts, but due solely to the pressure exerted when the tire is inflated and expands laterally, the flange 23 will be shifted outwardly, causing the beveled faces 26 and 27 to rideinto contact, and this will be attended by a contraction of the flange 23, so that the greater the pressure the tighter will the flange 23 grip the demountable rim.
In practice the demountable rim 19 such as shown in Fig. 5, but having a tire thereon, which has been removed and not shown for purposes of clearer illustration, is applied to the wheel by first bringing the look ing bosses 20 into registry with the transverse slots 6 in the felly band 4, whereupon the demountable rim 19 is moved axially of the wheel until thebosses 20 arrive in the open ends of the slots 5. Thereupon the demountable rim 19 is rotated upon the felly band 4 in the direction to cause the bosses 20 tomove into the closed ends of the slots 5. The valve stem extending through the opening 7 is first fitted through the slot 8 in the folly.
The locking stud 18 will,-in consequence of this movement, rotate over and depress the locking dog 11, as shown'in Fi 1, and when the parts are shifted to the nal position such stud 18 will have found a seating in the slot 12, where it will be held from escape by the dog 11. In this condition the parts are locked against accidental dis-' placement and'can only be moved when the dog 11 is released by exerting a radially inward pull upon the rod 16.
In view of the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided an improved demountable rim capable of quick detachment and application to the wheels of auto-- mobiles or other vehicles, and which when locked in place. will be held securely against accidental, displacement; and moreover the improved flange on the demountable rim may be easily operated and forms an effectual lock in; actual ractice.
