To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. STANLEY E. Steam,- now, a citizen of the United States, residing at McFarland, in the county of Dane and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Demountable Rims: and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wheels and par ticularly to rubber tired wheels for automobiles or other motor vehicles and the primary object of the invention is to provide a readily demountable rim for such wheels.
Other objects of the invention are to generally improve the construction and opera tion of such devices with a view to economy in construction, ease of manipulation, and non-liability of breakage or disarrangement of parts under ordinary usage.
With these objects in View, the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of the parts of a device of the character specified, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed,
In order that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended, I will now proceed to specifically describe my invention, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an approved embodiment thereof, and in which drawings,
Figure 1 represents in side elevation, a wheel, equipped with my improvements. Fig; 2 represents in side elevation, part of the clamping ring in its open position. Fig. 3 represents an edge view of the same part in its closed position. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on the plane indicated by the broken line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view on the lane indicated by the broken line 5-5 of Fig. (i, the latch be ing open. Fig. 6 represents a sectional view on the plane indicated on the broken'line 66 ofFig. 5, the latch being closed. Fig. 7 represents a detail view showing an opening through the rim for the withdrawal of the inflating valve. Fig. 8 represents a view similar to Fig. (3, showing a slight modification. My demountable rim comprises a plate 14: adapted to be fitted around the metal rim 12. the metal rim 1?. having a seat or outer surface 15 connected by an inclined surface 16, with another surface or seat 17, these three parts forming the circumference of the telly and the part 17 being nearer the center or hub of the wheel than the part 15.
The demountablc rim 14 is provided with annular inwardly projecting ribs 18 and 19,
the rib 18 being located to fit upon the seator surface 15 of the metal rim 1?, while the rib 19 is correspondingly located with reference to the seat or surface 17.
An ordinary rubber tire, as 13, is secured to the demountable rim 14 by the side parts 2O, 21, 22, 23, 24. of ordinary construction, these parts not being included within the limits of my invention, but being interchangeable with others well known in the art.
Upon the outer edge of the metal rim 1?, is an integral fiat metal flange 25 which projects slightly beyond the periphery of said rim and serves as a stop, when the demountable rim l4- slides sidewise upon the metal rim 12, such position of the rim being indicated in Figs. (3 and 8. In order to secure. the demountablc rim 14 in this position, I provide the rib if) with a metal flange 26 adapted to fit against the side edge of the metal rim 12 and the folly opposite to that on which the metal flange 25 is secured. said flange 26 being wedge shaped as elcarlv shown in Figs. 6 and S, the inner face of the rib 19 being provided with equidistant transverse grooves 27 to receive ribs 28 on the outer surface of the metal rim 12.

When the den'iountahle rim 14v is slipped into the position illustrated in Figs. 6 and 8, the'la tches must be turned upon their bolts, as indicated in Fig. 5, and after the wedge flange 26 has been placed in position, the latches are turned back to the position of Figs. 6 and 8, bearing upon the outer surface of said wedge flange.
In order to hold the latches in their locked positions, I employ an open clamping ring 35, the ends of which stand normallyopen leaving a space 36, as in Fig. 2. At the end 37, I pivot a lever 38 of U-shape in cross section having wings 39 at its outer end with openings 40. At a short distance pivot 37 as at 42, Ipivotally conare jouralso as clearly site end is pivotally connected, at 48, to the other end of the ring 35.
The ring 35, in its open position, is passed around the latches, resting on the friction rollers 34, when by drawing the lever 38 upon the ring 35, its U-shaped body will embrace the ring, and the wings 39 will lie on opposite sides thereof. A cotter pin 44 is now passed through the openings 39 and a registering opening 45 in the ring. The link 41 is now down upon and embracing the lever 38, and the ends of the ring 35 brought together, firmly clamping the ring around all of the latches and holding them in locked positions.
In order that the inflating tube may be withdrawnreadily through the felly 12, when the demountable rim to which the rubber tire and that tube are connected, is felly, I have provided. in the telly an elongated or elliptical opening 46, as shown in Fig. 7, which will prevent the cutting or injury of the inflating tube during such removal.
'While I have specifically described the exact construction and arrangement of the component parts of my invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention most nearly appertains, that slight changes and variations may be made therein, within reasonable limitations, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is f 1. The combination with a wheel provided a pneumatic tire and adapted to be fitted aterally upon the a felly and a metal rim thereon, of a periphery of the metal rim, :1 stop rigidly secured on one side of the metal rim, means for securing the demountable rim on the metal rim comprising latches pivoted to the side of the'felly having their inner ends bent outwardly and backwardly, a contractible clamp ring mountable in said bends to hold the latches in operative position, said bends having friction rollers journaled therein and said contractihle ring being adapted to inelose and bear upon said friction rollers and comprising an open ring, a lever pivoted to one end thereof, and a link connecting the other end of the open ring with the lever at a distance from its pivot.
2. The combination of a wheel having a felly, a metal rim mounted thereon having an out-turned edge, said edge being provided with an out-turned square flange, a cylindrical surface having a large diameter, a cylindrical surface having a comparatively smaller diameter, a frusto-conical surface uniting the two said cylindrical surfaces,
lugs on said smaller diameter cylindrical surface,a demountable rim fixed on said metal rim having a rib seated on said large diameter surface and against said outturned flange, a rib seated on said smaller diameter surface with recesses therein, a seat in the aforementioned lugs, an inturncd flange from said last mentioned rib seated against said metal rim and said felly, and having a beveled surface and central latches pivoted to the side of the said felly, said latches having a slightly flanged portion at one end to seat against said beveled surface and back turned portions at the other end, a roller mounted in said back turned portions, and a contractible ring likewise seated therein and having a contractible lockin device operatively connected thereto, sai ring locking said latches in operative position and said latches locking said demountable rim.

A wheel comprising in combination a felly, a metal rim mounted upon said felly having a cylindrical surface with lugs proiecting therefrom, a frusto-conical surface leading to a second cylindrical surface, the said second cylindrical surface having a projecting flange therefrom, a demountable rim mounted upon said metal rim havin a rib depending therefrom, said demounta le rim passing up and over said fruSto-conical surface and connecting the said second mentioned flange having a. second depending rib therefrom seated against said lugs and having an int-urned flange thereto limiting the inward movement of said demountable rim, a pivoted latch seated against said inturncd flange to limit the outward movement thereof, a contraetible ring mounted upon said latch to retain it in operative position, a lever attached to one end of said ring and having a lug in the end thereof, and a link pivoted to the upper end of said ring and to the approximately center portion of said lever.
4. A wheel including a telly, a fixed rim, a demotmtable rim laterally removable therefrom, relatively fixed means carried by the fixed rim'and engageable With the demountable rim for holding the demountable rim against lateral displacement in one direction, m w ble means carried by the telly for holding the deinountable rim against lateral displaeei'ncnt in the other direction, said movable means including a plurality of pivoted latch members mounted on the felly and engaging, when in locked position, the
demountable rim, hook members formed on the inner terminals of said latch members and means for holding the pivoted latch members in looking engagement with the demountable rim, said last mentioned means including a collapsible locking ring adapted to seat in the said hook members for holding the latches against swinging movement.
