UNITED STATES PATENT CEFIGE.
JOHN OHANDLESS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEER-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 135,688, dated February l1, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-IN CHANDLEss, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ale and Tater Oooler combined, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved ale and water cooler combined. Fig. is a vertical transverse section ot' the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new apparatus for cooling ale, and has forvits object Ilot to destroy the vitality of the ale while cooling it.
Itis a peculiar property of the beverage named that, when cooled in casks or vessels, while at rest it becomes dull, losing its vitality, and consequently its value as a merchantable article; nevertheless, it is desirable to cool it during the warm season.
The invention consists in a peculiar]y.C0n structed pipe-conveyance, through which nl@ or other liquids may be conveniently-v brought within the influence of cooling substances placed in a refrigerator.
A in the drawing represents aboX or tank,
'of suitable size, shape, and material, arranged to contain ice and water, and so serve therefore as a refrigerator. B is a ,zigzag or coiled pipe contained within the refrigerator A, the
upper end projecting above the top of A, and terminating in a funnel or enlargement, a. The lower end of the pipe B projects through a side or the bottom of A, and has a cock, b, whereby it can be closed or opened. Being surrounded by ice-water the pipe B is neces sarily cool, and will serve to cool whatever liquor may ilow through it. rEhe ale, when drawn from a cask, barrel, or other receptacle, is lirst poured into the funnel co, and is then withdrawn from the lower end of the pipe B. While flowing through it is properly cooled without being deprived of its vitality, because kept in motion. 4The pipe B has a branch, d, for the escape of air.
Ice-water may be drawn from the tank A through a faucet, e, arranged thereon, thus increasing the utility of the apparatus tor retail dealers of liquors. y
Ilavin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The zigzag funnel-toppedpipe a B, provided with the airescape d, combined with and applied to the refrigerator A, as and for the purpose set forth'.
y JOHN HANDLESS.
